CONGRATS! TONY & STEVEN COWELL on GT/JA Class Win!!!

Tony is an "old school" racer who still gets the job done with a really different car combination, foot brakes, hauls on an open trailer, and all with an older body (Tony's). His driving shoes are steel-toed to slow down his lights (like his .005 & .008 in class). He has different shoes based on how tight the lights are.

Forego your usual tailgate dining and take Steven, you trusty crew chief, out for a well-earned dinner.

Congratulations to two of the nicest "Good Guys" in Div. 4.

Well Deserved!
Pete & Pat

Corn-grat-u-lay-shuns to Tony and Steven. Now I know one of Tony's dial-in secrets. I'll have to pay attention to his shoes the next time I see him at the track. I will have to take them both out for dinner after work sometime.

Thanks for the congratulations. Really means a lot coming from you all.

The only other time dad won class at Indy was N/SA in 1989. At that time I was age 7 and in school. Looked at that class winner circle picture for years as a kid. Daydreaming of the day we'd both be in the class winner circle at Indy. Took a few years and a couple of tries. But, we made it. Great experience.

Now about the shoes. No heavy steel toe for this race. Dad knew the car would be sluggish with the warm and humid conditions. So, he bought a new pair of lightweight athletic shoes from the Walmart clearance section for $10. Worked great for qualifying and class. Not so well in the eliminator.

To answer Bench Racer's question:

It's the 1972 small valve, non-Stage 1 combination. All 1971-76 small valve 455 Buick engines share the same NHRA horsepower factor for Super Stock.

Proves you don't have to have a big tire car from a chassis shop with a store bought SBC to be fast in SS. Enough smarts, ability & hard work will get it done.
