2 S/SS races November 2-3 Hagerstown MD, $2K to win Nov 3rd

Annual Lee Sherman Memorial Stock/Super Stock Races

Saturday-Sunday November 2-3
Mason-Dixon Dragway, Hagerstown MD (1/4 mile races)
Track is on US 40, approximately 5 miles east of I-70 exits 32
All NHRA and IHRA-legal S/SS cars, as well as Nostalgia/SS welcome

Weekend Schedule:

Friday November 1: parking for early arrivals (parking goes all day/night)
~
Saturday November 2nd:
Gates open: 11 am
Test and Tune: 1pm-6pm ($30 paid to track)
S/SS Race, $50 entry, Round 1: Approximately 3 or 3:30 pm
Crew/spectators: $10
For racers there who are not testing or racing, $10
Annual Racer Dinner: 7:30 pm, Crazy Horse Steakhouse and Saloon (or Western Sizzler)

Test and tune is not called up in sessions. You just go to the lanes when you want to make a pass. Traditionally, lanes 1-2 are for S/SS, 3-4 for street tire cars, 5-6 are for slick tire cars. Around 3:00 or 3:30 pm, we will call for S/SS round 1 to the lanes (they will likely empty the lanes of T-n-T cars to make room for S/SS and for Gamblers race cars, then re-open test and tune after 2nd round. Cars that lose in S/SS may continue to make test runs as long as T-n-T goes on (usually til the final of S/SS). Cars are pulled side-by-side (lane 1 runs lane 2).

S/SS race random pairing for round 1. Bye-run chosen at random. Cars laddered by reaction time for second round. Tie-breaker is closest to the dial. If still a tie, whoever did it first will receive the higher spot on the ladder (if two drivers win with an .017 light and +.021 over their dial-in, whoever did it first receives the higher spot).
~
Sunday November 3rd:
Gates open: 10 am
Time trials: 12 pm (two runs)
Eliminations: after time trials (also Electronics and Footbrake classes
S/SS Race, $100 entry (plus $10 tech card fee paid to track)
Crew/spectators: $10
Also 1/8 mile races for Electronics ($60) and Footbrake ($50). S/SS WILL be ¼ mile (quarter-mile)
* SUNDAY RACE GUARANTEED $2,000 TO WIN (OR MORE) *

Random pairing for round 1. Best reaction time during the second time trial receives the bye run. Cars laddered for round 2 based on round 1 reaction times.

All NHRA and IHRA legal S/SS cars welcome. No heads-up runs. All cars must dial the Index or quicker (using IHRA Index. SS/AA 9.95, A/SA 11.30, etc).
Nostalgia/SS dial in to the hundredth and can change their dial between rounds. Cars allowed, are based on NMCA, 422 All-Stars, etc rules.

Cars do NOT need to make a bye run or take the tree. A racer with a bye may return to their pit, or remain in the lanes if in a round-robin situation, their choice.

Both races 100% payback. Both races start third round loser, 3rd round loser gets their entry fee back.
With current sponsorship for the Association, $100 will go into the Saturday purse and $200 into the Sunday purse, not counting any additional money that may come)

So, with a good car count, a chance to win almost FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS, with a total entry fee of $190 ($30 T-n-T fee, $50 S/SS race, $10 tech card and $100 S/SS race). Not counting contingency, no NHRA or IHRA race anywhere can approach that. And, as always, the more cars we get = the bigger the purse = the higher the payouts.

Hope to see you November 2-3 in Hagerstown Maryland !!

Re: 2 S/SS races November 2-3 Hagerstown MD, $2K to win Nov

For hotel recommendations, I suggest several of the hotels on Dual Highway (aka U.S. 40), the same road as the track. Most are 5-6 miles west of the track. There is a Super 8, Hampton Inn, Comfort Inn, a hotel that was once a Days Inn. Super 8 is usually around $65-70 a night, three people/two beds. For restaurants near those, there is a Denny's, a Bob Evans, a steakhouse (Longhorn?), a Dairy Queen, a few ethnic restaurants as well.

Though I highly recommend joining us for our annual racers dinner at the Crazy Horse Steakhouse and Saloon (one exit north on I-81). I will talk to Larry Mohar this week, to see about reserving the back room for us. They (Crazy Horse) will need a head-count and maybe a deposit, that is refundable, for the back room. SO if you are coming that weekend and plan on joining us for dinner, please let Larry or myself know. If we can't get the room (like last year), we will go up the street to the Western Sizzler steakhouse.

There are 1-2 gas stations near the hotels on 40. Also a big Sheetz at US 40/Rt 66 a half-mile west of the track on 40, for those needing fuel.

Mike,
Are you able to give an average car count from previous races?
I am interested in spectating.... I know you can't predict with certainty the number of STK/SS but an average number would help. Possibly a lot more in attendance due to cancellation of the Dutch. I hope so, I am not ready to stop watching STK/SS yet!

Re: 2 S/SS races November 2-3 Hagerstown MD, $2K to win Nov

This will be the nineteenth straight November for me at this race (1995 was my first; from what I understand it's been going on much longer than that). We have had thirty cars or more every year but two that the race actually ran (1996 it was cold, and 2002, when there was an IHRA race on it's third try of the year in VA and a Maryland racers east coast wedding reception that weekend); 1997 was totally rained out, nothing was even close to going down the track.

Car counts by year (total cars that showed that weekend)
1995: 39
1996: 26
1997: rained out all weekend
1998: 35
1999: 37
2000: 38
2001: 57
2002: 24
2003: 41?
2004: 40?
2005: 42
2006: 40
2007: 44
2008: 31
2009: 41
2010: 44
2011: 73, from eight different states
2012: 36 (Hurricane Sandy kept many home)

We've been there when the high temperature struggled to reach forty; we've been there more than once when it was near eighty degrees, so be sure to plan accordingly.

Since I started going in 1995, it was test and tune Saturday/race Sunday. 2001-2008, I did a Best Package shootout on Saturday and race Sunday. 2009 had a small entry Gamblers race Saturday/main race Sunday, and since 2010, has been a two-race weekend.

Always a good time at this race. I talked to some people while at the Dutch Classic that plan on being there. You could wear your car out at this race if you wanted too!! There was a Camaro bracket car last year that made 35(?) passes last yr. Last year was the coldest one I remember, but like Mike said some years it's in the high 70"s.

Re: 2 S/SS races November 2-3 Hagerstown MD, $2K to win Nov

This is an excellent race to end the stock / super stock racing season. This time of year the air is usually good to great and the track prep will be excellent. Cars will run fast. All of us at Mason Dixon from the Wachter family and all of us staff members talk about and look forward to this race. For Stockerstang and all other race fans you will see plenty of class cars make their time runs and eliminations in a fairly short fast paced period of time. On Sunday we will also be running a electronics and footbrake 1/8 mile bracket race. We look forward to seeing all the racers and race fans on Nov. 2nd and 3rd. A big thanks again to Mike Carr for his hard work putting this race together for 2013. See you all soon!

If my car runs good next weekend in testing, I'll try to be there. 172 miles out of 189 are on 81 according to map quest and only 2 traffic lights between my house and the track. It's twice the distance of Maple Grove to the penny, but the drive would be very relaxing.

My favorite event of the season! Hope to be there with Bobby Fazio and Bob Sr..Hope all the racers from New Jersey make it back after last years tragedy.I also hope that those whose year ends with the Dutch Classic will want to end the year racing ,not dodging raindrops!

Do you normally have a good turnout for the N/SS cars? Thinking about making the trip.

Re: 2 S/SS races November 2-3 Hagerstown MD, $2K to win Nov

This is our first year allowing N/SS in our series. We haven't had very many at all at the local (western PA/eastern OH) races this year. Four on Memorial day weekend, one June 15, one Sept 7, and two Sept 28 (none Sept 29). We had a two-day two-race weekend at Pittsburgh Sept 28-29. N/SS chose to have their own, stand-alone class for just them, because, in their words, "$100 is too much to pay to race". To most of us (S/SS), that was totally absurd, but, whatever...I'll pay 100 to run for two grand every day of the week (and would have paid $2K at Pittsburgh with the fifty combined cars between the two eliminators. I don't expect a huge turnout of N/SS at Hagerstown, honestly.

Also, if any racer, company or sponsor would like to get involved with the November races, let me know. Support could be in any fashion. Money into the race purse(s), award for long distance tow, best winning and/or losing first round package, prize for first racer to win with a dead-on with a zero, gift certificates for winners and/or RU's, whatever you would like to do. Any support is greatly appreciated.

Oh Yes!!

This is probably my favorite race of the year! I get a chance to visit with a lot of folks who I only see once or twice a year. Doesn't really matter what the temperature is (and it can get really cold!) I can't imagine NOT having a good time at this event.

This one answers the question "What if they held a race and a party broke out!":D I'll be there!

I want to thank D-1 Comp racers Ronnie and Jeff Boyd. They are posting $250 into the race purse(s) for the weekend. Fifty dollars ($50) to the racer with the Long Distance Tow for the weekend, and $100 into each days' race purse. Thank you guys so much for your support!

Also, if any other racers or companies want to get involved, let me know.

It only looks short because the timing and mph boards are located at half track.

I just got off the phone with the Super 8 in Hagerstown (on U.S. 40, aka Dual Highway, same road as the track, about 5-6 miles or so west on 40). Rooms are $59.99 plus tax for Friday and Saturday night. But, if you mention the Mason-Dixon Race, the rate is $54.99 plus tax for those nights, so be sure to mention the Mason-Dixon Race for that lowered rate. :)

Phone number is (301) 739-5800 for the Super 8.

Re: 2 S/SS races November 2-3 Hagerstown MD, $2K to win Nov

I want to thank Carl Schodde Jr for his support this season. He's been tied up with work and projects and has only been able to race once with us this year. He has generously contributed his entry fee into each race purse this year, and is doing so for Hagerstown too. So far, with Carl and the Boyd family, we will have an extra $400 for the weekend purses from them; the Boyds are contributing $250 ($100 into each race plus a $50 award for the weekend's Long Distance Tow) and Carl's $150.

Also, be sure to thank our sponsors Jim Evanuik, Jim Lydon and Jan Cavacini. These gentlemen each posted $800 into our Association ($2,400 total, divided up into individual race purses and year-end Points Series), so with their help, there is another $300 into the weekend races ($100 Saturday and $200 Sunday).

And, if anyone else is interested in posting any money/awards for the weekend, please let me know.

I know we are still five days away from the weekend. But, as of this afternoon, weather forecast looks really good according to wunderground.com

Sunny Saturday, 61 high/43 low
Mostly sunny Sunday, high 54 low 37.
Best thing, zero % chance of rain either day. I will take that weather.

Mike Carr 10-28-2013 01:17 PM

Re: 2 S/SS races November 2-3 Hagerstown MD, $2K to win Nov

With the extra money, if we can equal our best ever car counts for each race, payouts will be:

Saturday $50 race with 41 cars
3rd round - 50
4th round - 100
5th round - 200
Runner-up - 500
Winner - $1,000

Sunday $100 race with 63 cars
3rd round - 100
4th round - 200
5th round - 500
Runner-up - 1,300
Winner - $2,700

All for a total weekend entry fee of $190 (30 Sat test and tune, 50 S/SS race, 10 Sunday tech card and 100 S/SS race).

And, as always, more cars/sponsors = bigger purses = better payouts

We are looking for a big turnout this weekend for our Lee Sherman Memorial stock / super stock combo event. Elmer and all of our staff have been looking forward to this event for weeks now. All of us love class racing and nothing beats hard charging wheelstanding stock / super stock cars going at it on our track. This year track prep has been outstanding in just about any racing conditions, the hook should be there! We have talked this event up over the PA and on our website for weeks and our race fans know what is coming this week. We gave out half price pit passes for the event to all race fans that attended our very big well attended diesel truck event this past weekend. This year we made some track improvements, scales now are operational but the biggest upgrade is our new Daktronics LED scoreboards, these boards are terrific. We all look forward to seeing all of you this weekend, we are counting the days!

I will likely be up there on Sunday just to spectate. We were having some brake issues with the Bounty Hunters '64 Polara NSS car and had sent everything back to Aerospace for them to go through since I don't know the history on any of it, and 2 days later I found out about this race. Might have to make it to a couple of events next year as time/money allows.

Re: 2 S/SS races November 2-3 Hagerstown MD, $2K to win Nov

Just a recap of the weekend schedule and activities

~S/SS as well as Electronics and No-Electronics will be run both days. If you need to contact the track to see what is/is not allowed in either class, send them an e-mail dragway1@aol.com and also to see how much of what kinds of racing fuel they have left, if you need any. S/SS may race No-Electronics as well, if they wish, paying the track for the entry for that class. Be sure to be ready for each class' call to the lanes.

~Saturday will have test and tune for those wishing to do so that do not want to race ($30 for all cars running that day). Test and Tune is NOT called; you just go to the lanes when you want to make a run; S/SS will likely use lanes 1-2 on the right hand side of the track (on the right if you are on the starting line, looking downtrack). Tech is located on the right side of the track, the tech shack is in the second row of pits that runs parallel to the staging lanes. They will likely make a 'last call' to test and tune at a certain point (3:30 or so), and run out what they have in the lanes, then call round 1 of racing up. Bring your $50 with you if you hadn't paid already when they call round 1. T-n-T will resume likely after 2nd round eliminations. Cars that lose in racing may continue to make test runs if they wish. T-n-T goes 1pm-6pm, or until the finals of racing classes. S/SS race entry is $50. payouts start $50 third round loser, and round money doubles. $50 3rd round, 100 4th, 200 5th. If we get forty-five cars or more, we will bump 5th round loser to $250. 45 car field, with additional sponsorship ($250 extra in the purse) will pay $50 3rd round, 100 4th round, 250 5th round, 550 R/U and $1,100 winner. First round is run random pairing, they pull cars side by side (lane 1 runs lane 2, etc, so if you want to stay away from a friend/teammate/family member. go up a few cars apart and in the same lane; at leat make sure there are a number of cars between you). Bye run chosen at random and sent to the 'hot pits', on the left side of the track. Cars laddered for round 2 based on round 1 winning reaction times. Tie-breaker is closest to the dial, on the plus side first. If still a tie, whoever did it first gets the higher spot on the ladder.

~Don't forget dinner at the Crazy Horse Steakhouse and Saloon. 7:00 pm Saturday night. I cordially invite ALL the S/SS racers and their crew/family to dinner. Great food, and home of the infamous thirty-five ounce "manly beer".

~Sunday is S/SS, Electronics and No-Electronics. Not sure if they are offering Test and Tune or not. S/SS is usually first in rotation, again in lanes 1-2. $100 S/SS race entry, plus $10 tech card fee to the track. S/SS payouts start $100 third round loser, and doubles each round (100-200-400). Sponsorship adds $400 into the race purse. If we get forty-five cars or more, we will bump 5th round loser to 500. If the race goes seven rounds (sixty-five or more cars making first round), we'll pay $600 sixth round loser. Seventy car field would pay $100 3rd round, 200 4th, 400 5th, 600 6th, 1,300 R/U and $3,000 (three grand) to Win. Same deal as Saturday, random first round pairings (lane 1 vs lane 2, etc) and laddered for round 2 by reaction time. 1st round bye run chosen by the best reaction time during the 2nd time trial Sunday. Again, if you hadn't paid myself or my parents yet, bing your money up when they call round 1.

~In 2011, we had forty-one make first round Saturday and sixty-three made first round Sunday. So those above car count figures are within reasonable reach. So, a racer that could win both days could potentially pocket over four thousand dollars, for a total weekend entry of $190 (Saturday $50 race entry and $30 test and tune; Sunday $10 tech card and $100 race entry); a racer who is runner-up each day wins close to two thousand bucks.

~If you pay for a days race entry early on, and break before first round, your entry fee ($50 or $100, depending on the day) is refunded in full.

~We'd like to thank Division 1 Comp racers Jeff and Ronnie Boyd for their support. They posted $250 into the weekend's races. $100 into each days purse, plus $50 for the racer over the weekend that has the Long Distance Tow. Also S/S racer Carl Schodde. He has been busy this year with projects and the house, and has been unable to race as much as he would like. He has graciously donated his entry fee into each race he could not make, so $50 into Saturday's purse and $100 into Sunday's. Also, our three main Association Sponsors, S/S racers Jim Evanuik, Jim Lydon and Lydon's nephew Jan Cavacini. These three gentlemen posted $800 each ($2,400 total) into the Association this year. It was split up amongst the eight race purses and our year-end Points Fund. So from that, $100 into Saturday's race and $200 into Sunday's. The payouts examples I listed above includes the added bonus money. A huge thank you to all those who contributed to and sponsored us this season.

~Bye runs DO NOT have to be made. No staging, taking the tree or anything. You can return to the pits if you wish, or remain in the lanes if it is round robin. No sense breaking the car and 'losing' on a bye run--I always thought that was stupid. That rule came about from this race about ten years ago. They were in the semifinals of Super Pro. First pair ran, smoke on the top end. Shut the bye run car off in the water box while they checked the track. All was clear. Told the bye run car to start it up, it wouldn't fire. So he lost the round (and the extra money), on a bye. I always thought that was silly, so we changed it for our Association the next year, that bye runs did not have to be made, so it wouldn't happen to any of you.

~Payouts each day will be at the timeslip booth. At Hagerstown, the time slip booth is back near the starting line, on the left side of the track where the retun road runs up. My mother and/or father will be there each day paying the round money, so if you make the early turnoff to go back to your trailer if you are pitted on that side, please stop back and see them for your money. We can always mail out unclaimed money (had to do it a few times), but it's easier to pay at the track.

~Winners circle pics will be taken by us each day after the final, for the winner and R/U if they so choose; Winners Circle is on/at the wall 100' or so behind the water box.

I think that pretty much covers all the need-to-know information for the weekend. If there are still any questions, please post here or call/e-mail me. We will be leaving sometime tomorrow morning, I will have my laptop to check in at the hotel each night; in the meantime, e-mail to buffdaddy_1302@hotmail.com or call my cell phone (724) 510-5912.
