Mike edwards / modified eliminator

Does anyone have photos of Mike Edwards running a Maverick in modified eliminator in the 70/s. Thanks

The Maverick that Mike Edwards had was originally the Super Stock Magazine car owned and driven by Arlen Fadely.

Here's a pic of it at an NHRA Div. 5 points race at my local track, Thunder Valley Dragways in Marion, South Dakota:

Here's one when it was owned by Arlen Fadely. It was a project car built to compete in the then-new Super Modified class(es). http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...psd585c49f.jpg

Super Modified was the brainchild of Car Craft's Ric Vogelin and Norm Mayersohn and was created as an affordable way to race in Modified Eliminator. Car Craft did the Vogelin/Mayersohn Camaro and SS&DI did the Fadely Maverick.

If I remember correctly he had a Fairmont SM after the Maverick. One of my favorite cars at the time (1980).

Wasn't he the last NHRA Modified World Champion with the car in 1981 before NHRA dumped the eliminator?

That's correct, Mike was the last Modified Eliminator World Champ in '81 and was and is a heck of a racer and an even nicer and genuine guy.

Last time I talked to Mike about it, the son of a guy from Ford owned it. Don't remember his name. Probably 6 or 7 years ago. Don't think it was being raced.

A guy named Joe Spinelli from Pennsylvania bought the car about 7-10 years ago and took about 2-3 years to totally restord it to what it looked like when Arlen drove it--- not sure if he still has it --FED387

I think that you are thinking of the Fairmonts of either Ron Baker (green B/SM sedan), or Don Bowles(Yellow A/SM Futura). I believe that Mike edwards won the 1980 championship with the Maverick.
And I gotta agree, Modified Production had to be one of the coolest classes ever to watch.

The Maverick was at the York Muscle Car Madness show this July restored (beautifully and correctly I might add) to its configuration when Arlen won Modified at Indy in '77.

could they not run modified with comp eliminator?

Joe Spinelli from Philadelphia still owns this car along with Al Joniec's 70 Boss429 Mustang. Joe has a very extensive car collection and his restorations are incredible.

I was at Green Valley (Fort Worth) for a points meet that I believe Mike won. Looked to me that he yanked the front tires when he pulled fourth gear(5-speed). This car, as they now say, was "bad fast".

didn't Lee Shepherd drive that before Mike for R-M?

Re: Mike edwards / modified eliminator

Lee Shepherd car was a small block chevrolet(288).It was maybe the Cross and Corzine car.I dont think it ever had a ford engine. He tapped the wall with it at Indy in maybe 73,or 74 trying to keep from going too fast..The next year he raced the Corvette.Lee's first modified car was a '63 Nova wagon. He was runnerup at the NHRA Springnationals in Columbus in 1972.

Modified got split up into comp and SS with the "faster" classes going into Comp and the slower ones going to SS generally speaking. Some classes could go either way, such as F/SM in Comp and SS/CS in SS. SS/CS being the old C/SM class.

It was great running Modified, with the stick shift cars with hood scoops. I had the honor to run my uncles K/G, (SS/BX, later SS/AX) Opel GT.....

Just a couple clarifications.

Arlen built the Maverick from a body-in-white.

Took it to Don Hardy in Texas to build it.

The car had plenty of trick stuff (for its time). I know, I raced against it enough!

The Maverick that resulted in the coming together of the R-M-S team started out as David Reher's street car when he was in college with Buddy Morrison. Buddy Had a 350hp-327 engine, four-speed and 12 bolt rear end out of Chevy II and they got together to make a sleeper to do some Saturday night racing. They ended up racing the car some at the Kennedale dragstrip that lee frequented with his Chevy II wagon. The three of them decided to put the engine and trans out of Lee's box wagon into the Maverick for some real class competition. They made quite an impression on lots of folks. Car Craft did an article on the car and called it the "Texas Suckermaker".

Am I correct in recalling that the Chevy powered R-M-S Maverick had "The Real boss 302" lettered on its sides? Forget what I had for lunch yesterday but think I recall that bit of trivia.

If I recall, this is the Maverick that Arlen stood up on the back bumper at Byron. The wheel stand picture sequence was on the cover of Stock/Super Stock. Thought it was going to go over...one fast Ford! Anybody have those pics?

Apparently Mike sold his Pro Stock operation to Chris Magaha but is going to help him with the car. This is pretty sad but with his torn rotator cuff, unkind "Countdown" turn of events and Cagnazzi hiring away key personnel I can't say it's completely unexpected. Here's hoping he returns with a vengeance in the future. Meanwhile Magaha will be a player to be reckoned with.

Sad news indeed, Mike was always a credit to Pro Stock and drag racing in general. Hope he returns at some point as well and in the meantime recovers nicely from his operation.
