16 v battery
Its time to update my battery in my super stocker. Looking to upgrade to a 16 V battery this time. What do you recommend or not?
Thanks, |

WE HAVE HAD GREAT SERVICE FROM the lightweight Rock and Braille units we use and sell them never had a failure yet. |
Re: 16 v battery
Cannot comment on any performance increases, however I've got 2 XS power 1000's in mine. Bought in 2007, quick recharge, no problems. I do not run an alt. could find no good reason not to go to 16 volt, if there is one I'm unaware of it. Of course weight was not an issue for me. Joe

Re: 16 v battery
I'm with Joe, and we have the same batteries. My car is faster with either 12 volts & an alternator, or 16 volts without, than 12 volts without. Had the belt come off a couple of times. No belt to screw with now. Racing starters, coils, fuel & water pumps are now made to be fine at 16 volts, as well as my FAST ECU, and MSD stuff.

Re: 16 v battery
I have 2- 16V Turbo starts batteries in my SS, I am very happy and they have been very reliable, especially during "round robin". Only down fall is Bulbs in autometer gauges burn out faster, I am sure there is a cure for that.

two Turbo Starts, very happy with them, the hemi never started so well! One word of advice, do not go with the lightweight model, use the full size. Dyno

Re: 16 v battery
Wasn't happy with the life of my Turbostarts, 2 dead and gone in 1 season using their approved charger in my SSer. Very disappointed in quality. Anybody need a turbostart charger?

Re: 16 v battery
Ed, yes with EFI engine this can really be a problem.I can only comment on the set up I have but most "modern" chargers are automatic, I regularly leave mine on between races, no need to monitor it as it will go into a "floating" charge rate. Most of the local racers I know either run an alt. or have an old home use charger they use, most are not automatic in nature and can destroy a battery if left unattended. Mostly I guess it comes down to choice, I needed new batteries and decided to move up to 16 volt, and have no regrets of that decision. Do I think 16 volt is better....yes ignition, water pump, fans, fuel pump all receive more voltage....can't be a bad thing.

Re: 16 v battery
I believe that most battery related failures can be traced to improper charging of the battery. Usually over charging due to a mismatch of the battery and charger being used. Most people will tell you that, "I've been doing it that way for years". Well, things have changed in those years. Learn the newest best method.

Re: 16 v battery
My red old red top died at the end of the year , time to get a new battery . Do you guys that run the 16 volt batteries run 16 volt alternators or is the old 12 volt alt just disconnected ? I have always run 12vdc 55amp alt. and a red top very reliable , but they dropped the contingency .

Re: 16 v battery
The Super Stock car has 16V batteries, and it has a PowerMaster alternator that is adjusted to charge at around 17VDC.

What do those sell for, Fred?
Do they require a special charger? |
