Project Pure Stock Debut

Thanks to all the help from many on here for lil pointers and parts we got our pure stock experiment up and running. We just got our season started at the Immokalee Pro Am. Barely got what we needed done and were able to go just .12 under the index but we had a great weekend and loved mixing it up with some of our new stock eliminator brothers. The car was ok, driver did great Sat but drove like a mooooron on Sunday. Its already been a great learning experience and I'm confident our lil Camaro will be plenty fast once we make some more mods and straighten out some bugs.

Congrats and welcome to Stock Eliminator !

I found some video of the Stockers qualifying on Saturday.

Your car is in the video around the 56:03 mark:

LMAO @ MB!! Your memory is incredible!! We were discussing that driver and his "antics" overs Ralphs famous BBQ sat night.

Thanks for the video link!

Well? Did you tear that sucker down? Or is the (R) just for making El Diablo a registered trademark? :D

Power winders and my new requirement--->A CUPHOLDER!! LOL! I did put the R on the window and got the motor sealed. I was runnin the maro and had both kids in JR's so the amount of time to pull a head was zero. I'm almost embarrassed to put it there but I'm planning on pulling out more weight and dropping down to C in the not too distant future. I plan on running the whole season and hey, 20 points is 20 points.

Thanks Phil, its in Junk Yard Dog mode still. I'll worry bout pretty after its fast! Sides, I wouldnt feel right if my car didnt have Duck Tape (TM) ;) on the outside in at least one spot. I didnt realize it was you in the Mali. I tried to make the rounds a lil but three racecars and Momma at home with the flu kept daddy hoppin. CONGRATS on your win!

We used to get points for records (5 each, up to 2x per year), but haven't in many years -- one reason why there are so few records on the books anymore.

Take that an a buck thirty nine down to the corner an I'll get a Slurpee too!! LOL!

Maybe someday an maybe in a different car but workin on a late model Camaro under the hood is a PITA! Sides El Diablo has 158k of road grime all over the motor. Its pretty obvious its never been apart. Hopefully never will. (crossed fingers! LOL!)

Thanks Dan!

Kenny:
My daughter has a Spring Break and family wants to vacation in Sarasota.
Think I am going to bring my car down on the AutoTrain and run the Bradenton IHRA Points meet..

It is ironic that I have a Division 2 Car number but run Division 1.
If all comes together it will be 30 years since the last time racing at Bradenton.

Just hope they do not tear me down..

Come on Dan.....DRIVE that thing. Its only about 16 hours. Im an hour east of Bradenton and its only 15 1/2 hours from LaPlata/Waldorf Md. The train ride will cost as much as another race car would cost and ya cant get close to a drop off point without driving a ways. .

Yeah that is a thought...!
But the Train is NICER, get fed, place to sleep, watch some TV.
And be able to take a NAP :D
The Cost would be about the same.

I did drive to Darlington 8 hours each way last year.
During the miserable summer.
Through the insane Northern Virginia I-95 Corridor.
Think I am the only Racer Driving their machine to the Races.

The Drop off point is Sanford, Florida.
Next to my home in Altamonte Springs which is 30 minutes from Orlando.
Figure about a 2 hour drive to Bradenton from there.

You will be able to see my pale northern winter face a mile away !

Dunno. We have a LQ trailer and stay at the track. I think Bradentons website has a list of local hotels. If you have any troubles let me know as some of my boys are Bradenton locals.

Kenny,
You did'nt pull the old trick a truck puller customer of mine used to do did you? They had stock class they would put new engine in truck that was about 12 colors,I think each body panel was from different wrecked truck, then they would pour used diesel oil over engine, then bucket of dirt, looked like 150K miles, could'nt even tell had brodix heads, cast iron bowtie intake was all hidden well. Just aggravating you, hopefully you have sense of humor.
Congratulations on your record

SHHHHH!!!! Its really a SB2 w/ a sheetmetal and splits under all that greasy LT1 junk!! LMAO!!!

Thanks Dan but I'm almost embarrassed about it. There is no record in D and I only went 12 under. I did it cause the Tech guy told me there was points to be had. (misinformed-no points) I got the motor sealed. To make it official I need to go thru teardown which is a PITA in this car. I plan on dropping to C/PS very soon. Probably before Jackson at the end of the month.

KENNY....Congratulations !! You took advantage of a good thing...

I am trying to get the one in F or G...Just happen to have a lot of competition.
So what if it was 12 under...you have proper bragging rights!!

Think I will come bearing parts and come early.
Lot of guys griping my car is not legal.
If you are there it will be a snap to put it back together.

Need to bug Mike Baker about getting Points for Setting National Records.
Guarantee you will see a few NHRA guys trying to dominate that opportunity.

I like the way you think! Main thing I got to do it put the headers on. I havent removed the stock manifolds yet and I PRAY I dont snap off any of the old bolts. Yep, bug Mike Baker. I think some points would be good. From what the tech guy was planting in my head, I would get 20 for setting it in D, can only get those once. THEN I could get another 20 by dropping down to C and setting that one. I thought it was too good to be true as 40 bonus points at the end of the season could turn a zero into a hero right quick!

Kenny,
They will check bore, stroke, deck clearance, piston dish in my case,cc head, gasket thickness, cam lift, look at lifter,runners..... duration, spring pressure?
Jim Woods knows my engine well, probaly has my specs memorized LOL

The best way is take your car apart @ home, have head, intake etc. clean ready to go back together,I always set head, intake, bolts, pushrods rockers etc., all back in place @ home basically put all back together and just start bolts, that way you don't get to track putting back together and find out you left something @ home.
Show up on first day of pro am Friday of Sat. and Sun races,I always call the tech man and see when is good time to be there.
Since yours has'nt been apart this would really be good ideal, in case you have broken bolts or anything else that might need fixed. Measure head diameter of valves, they get bigger after miles, will flatten out 45 and make burr, best description around valve and cause head to measure big.
LT won't be too bad to put back, lot easier than LS,I know guys take heads off LS in the car,but I believe I would just as soon drop engine out bottom, I had to put water plug in pass head of my sons I left out ,I thought I was going to have to drop engine back out to get it in there, finally got it though.

Great advice rt there! Thanks! I was mainly afraid to pull it apart at IRR since I still have the stock exhaust manifolds on it. I just KNOW those will be a B!#$%. Headers to be installed soon. I ran it at Palm Beach last night. Got some decent rear shocks since the converter showed me how bad the 158k old ones were. Night and day! LOL! It actually pulls a baby wheelie and the shorties fell from 1.72 to a new best of 1.68. Now if I can just get it to shift waayyy sooner(next project).

Are you running ODB1 or ODB 2?
Have TunerCat for ODB1 on my Laptop,

Bryan Herter can get you a tune that is damn near perfect.
Who built your 4L60E?

Also installing a YankPT4200 Converter replacing my YankSS3800.
Hope to see a bit of improvement.

Re: Project Pure Stock Debut

Hey Dan, I'm running OBD1 and its a completely stock 158k 4L60 (no E). Wish I had done some homework as a 4L60E and OBD2 car would have been much more desirable. I probably still would have bought my 93 just cause it was a good deal. I'm waiting still on headers, need to get a chip burnt, and mainly need to get the tranny to shift earlier and more consistently. Got a trans-pak kit that is supposed to make the valve body manual and I would like to tweak the governor a lil to be able to leave it in D for bracket racing. My converter is a 4k stall and with the LOW first gear and 4.10's I feel like a lil tighter might be better. How does the tuner cats deal work? Do you burn your own chips?

ODB1 you program the PCM.
Bit easier to program than ODB2
Is your converter a locking converter?
Amazing you have a 4k stall converter without the ODB1 1-2 Shift fix.

BTW Bullet Cams has the perfect Legal Pure Stock Blueprint Cam and Springs for your car.

Re: Project Pure Stock Debut

I'll have to do some homework on the Tunercats deal. I will get a chip from someone after making the final major changes but it would be nice to be able to tweak it in the future. I called Greg at FTI about a converter. He has done several converters for me in the past. When I told him about this project I could almost see the gleam in his eye over the phone. Its a non-lockup (made the changes to the tranny) 4k street fighter series. Plus I COULD NOT beat the price. Less than I found most used converters. 60' went from 1.92 to 1.68!!!!! Please tell me about the 1-2 shift fix on a non-E tranny. I just got a B&M Trans Pak and hope that helps but if there is something else I would forever be in your debt! LOL!

PS. Bullet will be getting a phone call down the road.

Here is the website for TunerCat.
http://www.tunercat.com/

Do you have a 93 or 95 LT1 Camaro?
The Manual Valve Body most likely by passed the 1-2 Shift Issue.

Using a Converter greater than 3000 Stall causes the Housing to twist a degree or two preventing the Reluctor to lose signal with the Pickup.
Happens with Slicks and grippy surface.
Under normal conditions and street tires you do not have that problem.

Not an issue with ODB2.

BTW 4200 Stall is about the limit on our engines.

Re: Project Pure Stock Debut

He evidently has a '93 if it came with a 4L60 (not an E ), which has no shift issues with what guys call the "stall wall". That is only an issue with the '94/'95 LT1 PCMs. Had zero to do with the tail housing. It's a slip test issue in the '94/'95 PCM. I have a software hack for that. The OBD2 boxes happen to not have that. It has nothing to do with OBD1 or 2.
The '93 required a device programmer (aka "chip burner") and eraser if normal EPROMs are used. Also a couple of EPROMs and a piggy- back board, or spare factory MEMCALs with EPROMs which GM stopped selling in 2007. Some of the later MEMCALs came with OTP (One Time Programmable) proms. Saved GM about $.75 per unit.
Not sure where the 4200 stall limit story came from? Guys are running higher than that.

KennyAnderson 02-12-2014 04:35 PM

Re: Project Pure Stock Debut

This is a 93 with OBD1 and a no E 4L60. The tranny has no electronic controls. It uses a governor like a TH350 etc. I'm hoping the manual VB feature of this shift kit fixes it. I like the idea of leaving it in drive but it seems to shift inconsistently and late. The reason I say this converter could be tighter is simply cause with the 3 sumptin low gear and 4.10's it really revs fast in 1st and goes thru the power band quick. I'm seat of the pants guessing but the power band seems to be around 4500-5500.

Got headers today too! Woohoo! Long story short, I'm whittling away at it and the car responded a ton to everything I've done. .5 under shouldnt be much trouble.

Ed Wright 02-12-2014 05:28 PM

Re: Project Pure Stock Debut

If the rules allowed a different ratio trans it would be much more managble. That much low gear in a light car will keep you busy adjusting it. Mine was like a tractor. Spinning the tires or standing straight up. :-) The big RPM drops at shifts don't help anything.
Think tech would notice a metric 200? LOL

YUP.. had that problem when I went to a 3200 Stall Edge Converter.
Bryan Herter send me a 1-2 Shift Bin file to fix that problem.

Based on my Cam and Engine and Dyno Sheet.
The Stall limit for my car is 4200rpm.
