Ebay
I sold a set of heads complete for $1000.00 ebay charged $200.00 and paypal charged an additional fee. What is up with Ebay?

Re: Ebay
That seems real high. Can you post the auction number so I can look at it.

Re: Ebay
I think if you sell less than 50 items a month and don't have an Ebay store, its 10%. But that is on total price including shipping and handling. Plus paypal.

Re: Ebay
They have not earned the nick name "evilbay" for nothing.
Typical big corporation now, especially since they bought paypal. Which is why you are almost forced to accept and use paypal. Their website is terrible, too. |
Re: Ebay
I had the same thing happen to me when I sold an intake. So I called they told me it 's 10% of final sale price. E bay AKA Fee Bay.
|
Re: Ebay
they do charge 10% but even I can figure that $200 is 20% of $1000. they use the accounting firm of Dewey, Cheatum and Howe.

Re: Ebay
I have given up on the evil ebay, I rather sell on craigslist or on groups on Paypal. You then have to only give paypal their 10 pieces of silver

Re: Ebay
I just sold an item for $200 out side of Ebay and Paypal charged me $6.00 to have my customer pay me for the item--FED387

Re: Ebay
Yep, evil bay bought pay pal and now the two of them are the biggest racket outside of insurance companies and banks.

Re: Ebay
So...is it the price of the fee's or the fact that there is a fee at all that makes it evil?

My personal example; the racing parts business is pretty competitive, with tight margins. We don't generally list anything but old inventory on eBay, as there isn't any money to be made. Their "service" is not worth over 50% of my profit in some cases. |

Profit is not a dirty word. I do not have the slightest problem with a man making a living. However, I have no use for a bunch of executives making a killing. |
Re: Ebay
I can understand that reasoning. What I don't understand is the "evil" portion. They are a business and/or provide services for which a fee is logical and expected. The fact that these fees may be a bit higher than you or I may deem appropriate does not make them shady...the fees are well explained up front. We can make our own decision pertaining to the use of their services without any pressure. Ebay and Paypal both have some built-in protections for buyers and sellers alike...you won't find anything like that on Craigslist.

Actually, ebay has shifted to almost exclusively "protect" the "buyer", who pretty much has only to claim some sort of slight on the part of the seller, who really has no recourse. And they use pay pal to enforce their penalty on the seller. Their fees are not always so "upfront", either, and they change their "user agreement" on a regular basis. Their commissions are also rather high, considering the service they offer. No one is claiming that they were forced to use ebay. They are merely stating their opinions and experiences as to what ebay has become, as opposed to what it once was. |

Just out of curiosity because selling for me is rather sporadic...what were the fees/policies that were acceptable prior? |
Re: Ebay
Keep in mind that the fee that ebay charges is based not only on the final selling price of the item, but they also charge a fee based on the cost of the shipping. Triple fee for them. Fee for the final selling price, fee for the shipping cost and the paypal fee.

Re: Ebay
Doug,
That sounds high but like someone else said I don't know how the auction was listed. I sell a lot on E-bay and always figure its going to cost me 10% of everything including shipping. Here is a link to the E-bay "fees" page. Looks like it should be 10% but don't know if you used any optional services like buy it now etc. http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/fees.html |
Re: Ebay
Some one give this a try and see how it comes out... http://www.fees.ebay.com/feeweb/feecalculator

Re: Ebay
I have been using ebay for several years. The cost is usually 14%. No seller protection anymore. The last rtraw was sold an item, ship UPS using ebay account, get charged for 100.2 lbs instead of 10.2 lbs. That was 6 mo ago and haven't got it straight yet. To ebay >stuff it

Re: Ebay
I consider the most evil thing, is the raking you for 10% of the final shipping fee.
Its not my fault, all the really good buyers are in California, and most of the east coast. The further you are away, the more it costs, and the bigger their cut. Its 10 percent on the shipping fee, because some used to sell at cheap prices, with jacked up shipping fees. I bet 90 percent of the people didn't use that practice, but now everyone pays for that. I believe mandatory paypal is 2.5% So it just adds cost to everything you buy, because the sellers have to add it into the business costs. Now the real beware is DO NOT ship anywhere without tracking. If someone tells ebay their item didn't arrive, they refund the money out of your paypal account... right back to the buyer. While you claim it was shipped, they only believe certain tracking numbers, and greyhound buslines isn't on the list. They turned it into a scamming buyers market. A large number of people quit doing international sales through US Postal Service, because of the limits on tracking to certain countries. Time for swap meets again.... I need more social events anyway Don |
Re: Ebay
Why not just offer free shipping and have that out of the equation?
I remember those ads with super low prices and astronomical shipping...stupid. Always just glossed over those anyway. Come to think of it, if ebay is getting a cut/fee of the shipping why not put them in charge of shipping? Let them choose the shipping method and the seller buy a pre-printed label from paypal...would that not take care of the liability aspect? I know some of the heavy hitters like Jegs and Summit use ebay for some items with free shipping...do they have some favored status or special deals with ebay? Edit: A short search revealed that every item at Jegs ebay store features free shipping...Summit appears to be about 90% free shipping. |
