Re: 65 Plymouth wagon
2 BBL only. Compression somewhere around 8.5:1. No 273/4V hypo motors with the SW. Bill Koski is selling one in the classified but it is a sedan/hardtop.

Re: 65 Plymouth wagon
Go to NHRARACER.COM and look up the vehicle you want to run. Click on Stock Car Classification, then click on the year under the make you want to run. This will give you the info you want; motor, hp, weight, index. Then look under Engine Specs to find out about motor combo you want to run. Some will be auto only, some might be 2 bbl or 4 bbl only motors. I love wagons.

Re: 65 Plymouth wagon
Looks like U/S @ 14.65 or U/SA @ 14.85 index...3500ish pounds.

Re: 65 Plymouth wagon
If my memory serves me correct the 4bbl Hi-Po motor only came in the Dart and Barracuda and I think it was a 10.25:1 motor w/solid cam.
The 273 CI wagon only came with a 2bbl Carter Ball&Ball carburetor. Not sure if a 4 speed was available. I am pretty sure you are going to have to run 8.5:1 CR pistons in your combo. However, a 65 Plymouth Wagon would be a cool piece. Did the wagon come with a 361 or a 383 in 65? I would check out the big block combo because I think they were available with a 4bbl. |
Re: 65 Plymouth wagon
I looked up Bill Koski 's car it's a 66 273 2 barrel with a 4 speed so I Think I can run a 4 speed because I think it was an option in my year not sure who I would check wit to be sure!

Re: 65 Plymouth wagon
Didn't some of those 273's come with a Stromberg 2bbl?

Here you go... http://www.oldride.com/library/1965_...belvedere.html

Re: 65 Plymouth wagon
Yes i believe they did have a stromburg and on that link it says the 4 speed was an option on all belvedere and satellite models.

Re: 65 Plymouth wagon
A friend of mine used to run a 1965 Plymouth Valiant with the 273. I remember him telling me the 1965 273 had a bigger carb. From the specs from NHRA, it looks like the Stromberg has a slightly larger venturi than the Carter BBD.
180 273 DP 8.8 1-2 B&B BBD-3843S/SM 3844S/AUTO 2463252 1.5 M 57.3 B,5 Carter Carb sizes – 1437/1063 Strom Carb sizes – 1437/1125 It also looks like the 318s got a bigger carb. I never knew they were different. |

Leave Paul a message.....He is on this site a bit.
He is one of the most savvy stock racer I know and has been a help to use many times. My partner was AHRA Stock world champion with a 361 65 Wagon in 1972. 383 is a excellent combo also. |
Re: 65 Plymouth wagon
Dick Moreland and Clayton Wright are the masters of the 273. Their 65 Wagon has set the record numerous times.

Re: 65 Plymouth wagon
Rory you are right the small rear end and clutch was a weak link in the Valiant, Dart, and Barracuda combination with the Hi-Po option. It had that 4 inch bolt pattern wheel and at one time you couldn't find nice wheels for it. Later on Cragar came out with a wheeI. I am pretty sure though an 8 3/4 rear end out of a 62 dart fit under the Barracuda with little issue. Brings back a lot of memories mine was a fun car to drive. I would love to find an unaltered Formula S 4 speed car, but they are scarce.

Yes please post pics when you can and thanks to everyone for all the info thus far this is a good group of racers on here! |
Re: 65 Plymouth wagon
Not the car I'm talking about although they were involved with that one. I'm talking about Clayton's "Slo-Motion" 65 Plymouth wagon that he still runs.

Re: 65 Plymouth wagon
The 4 speed is no problem it is legal....160 hp rated stock heads,
167 hp rated with Edelbrock 60767 replacement heads....with the 2 bbl carb, small bore and valves hard to say if the 60767 heads would be worth the cost.....also the Stromberg carb is a legal replacement D L Rambo....STK 1300 |
Re: 65 Plymouth wagon
With all of the Killer cars in U/SA, and there is a bunch, I would give some strong thought about going with a 361 w/2bbl,or a 383 w/4bbl AFB ! Or even a 426 Wedge w/4bbl AFB ! The parts are available anywhere, and cheap ! No 4sp in Wagons in 65 ! I think ! ..John

Re: 65 Plymouth wagon
The info in my previous post is straight out of the classification guide...
The 273 is the only engine that is listed with a Stick option all other engines in the guide are Auto only combos..... D L Rambo....STK 1300 |
