Relocating

After sixty years of living in Connecticut and living and loving the Land of NED, my beautiful wife of twenty-nine years, Suellen and I are moving to Charleston, South Carolina this weekend to begin a new chapter of our lives.
I will be checking out the 1/8 mile racing scene at Orangeburg and Dorchester and hope to meet some D2 and IHRA Class Racer brothers and sisters in the Palmetto State.
Thanks to the Northeast Division for the memories, from Dover Dragstrip, New York National Speedway, Connecticut Dragway, Etown, Atco, the Grove, MIR, Epping and the rest.

Frank, we love the Low Country, and spend as much time there as we can. Charleston is a favorite destination that offers wonderful experiences every time we visit. Great food, shopping, history lessons and friendship!

I'm sure you will be thrilled with your decision. :)

Re: Relocating

Good luck, Frank. Had enough of the winters and the taxes and everything else the northeast has to offer ? I will be leaving Long Island within the next 3 to 4 months. Had enough of the Vampire State. My girlfriend landed a nice job in Sarasota and we will be looking in that area at the end of the summer. Putting in my papers with the union and will look to see what the area has to offer. Taxes going up every year. HOA fees on the town home have doubled
in the last 3 years. Done and finished. Been quite a ride but got to go. Hope to be settled in by Christmas. lol

I'd move back to Long Island in a heartbeat if they had even an 1/8th mile dragstrip and the taxes were a little more down to earth. I grew up in West Islip after moving out from Brooklyn as a kid and love that area so much but a small 1,000 sq ft home is about 12,000 a year in prop taxes and I'm looking to do a semi retirement in 7 months when I turn 60 so it wouldn't be a wise choice. PA is a decent compromise if you can deal with the corruption and lack of the ocean. I'm in the process of buying a house in Elysburg which is the PA equivalent of West Islip minus the ocean and it's 11 miles from Numidia Dragway, 1.5 acres and 1,400 taxes for the year and just 200 miles from West Islip.

Cape May area ..We are looking.. Nice area low taxes...

I.E.> the Pre foreclosures are amazing, if one has prior approval and a quick DP cash...Just right for a couple of (active) folks that want to get Away from the NYC metro area. ..but choose Not (cant) be far from some family and the OCEAN .

OUR parish deacon moved to Charleston last Mont after fire selling his Morris cty house that was on the market for 8 months...I talked to Him last week ..So Carolina is just perfect. Just get used to full time AC !!

Try Pages Okra Grill in Mount Pleasant. Great food and good prices. It is maybe five minutes from the Yorktown Aircraft Carrier. The shrimp and grits are wicked. I ate there twice while in town and Will go back again. Don Jackson

Frank,
Beautiful area Charleston, lots of history there. However, very humid in the summertime but you'll get used to it. I moved to NC 15 years ago from NY and this is the land of several drag strips. I have 9 within 2 1/2 hrs of my home including VMP in Dinwiddie and Z-Max in Charlotte. You need to come check out one of our CCRA events in the fall after you get settled.

I assume you have taken care of several items including a Visa from the United Daughters of the Confederacy; also from United Southerners to Abolish Sherman; and have enrolled in the Proper use of Yall in the Southern Language. This will get you in, but be aware there might be some local regulations also. There are no Cajuns there, so a permit is not needed. Just trying to be helpful. I think you will love it. Have a few friends there.

Finespline, when your getting close to coming to Sarasota give me a holler. I live just south of Sarasota. Can give you a lot of particulars like food, beaches, sports activities, food, racetracks, cultural areas, entertainment, places to avoid, and did I mention food. You will be using A/C quite frequently, but it beats snow, wind, sleet, slop, taxes, corruption, and congestion.

Randy, does this mean you are heading back to Englewood.

Hey Frank, you are about 4 hours from us. If we are ever over that way, I am going to look you up. Welcome to the south, you are going to love it. Charleston is a great area. If you are ever around the Lake Norman area, just north of Charlotte, please look us up. Love to catch up with you

Thanks Ron . Appreciate it. My significant other has already landed and started her new job and giving me daily updates. She works in Sarasota and we are renting a house in Bradenton. I will be renting an apartment up here late into into fall and then come down to look at real estate. She is already on the prowl looking at new homes. Got to give her some time to make sure this is the job she wants because this is the last move. Thanks again--John

Frank, you might consider wandering up to Orangeburg Dragstrip next Saturday, pretty nice little track. Jackson SC (outside Augusta) runs a good program as well. We sometimes go to Charleston beaches when we RV at James Island Park, which is very nice. And come check out downtown Savannah (the bus tours are good for getting the history ) and the Coastal Barrier Islands (St Simons, Jekyll, etc) are nice to visit. Feel free to PM for any tips.

Bob, take a look at Pawleys Island. Just south of MB, but close enough to be in range of the neccessities. The airport is about 40 min.

Re: Relocating

I just delivered a move to St. Simon's Island, GA TODAY! A BIT HUMID would be an understatement ! I'm no expert, but have been moving yankees to the south for over 40years! The best advise I could give anyone who wants to consider relocating to a new (usually warmer) area, is to take the time to actually live where they are considering for a while! ( If possible) There are some who jump right into an area they have stayed at before (on vacation) and find out it's not really the same when you live there after the touristy stuff is over with, not to mention how really hot it sometimes gets! Just sayin! I've moved folks to about every city & town in FL, GA, & the Carolina's. I feel I know FL better than I know PA! In any case, if you need any advise on the moving process and/or need an expert moving company, I'm willing to help!

I'll bite. Would it be more pleasant on the Carolina side above Gainesville? or on the gulf side? Heard Ashville is pretty nice also...

We love the Asheville area but of course it's a long way from Gainesville or even Charleston. The surrounding mountains and true four seasons make it attractive but if you're looking to escape winters Asheville isn't your place. It's a very pretty drive from there to Bristol and Charlotte isn't far as well. You need to do your research though on cost of living and taxes before making any plunge to your south.
