I want big wheelies

My car is running about as fast as I'd expect now, but it only gets a few inches of air under the tires and that's just not gonna cut it for me so let's hear some ideas, eh?
60 foots are 1.50-1.53. 327/275, Advanced clutch, 5.38 gear, Jerico w/ 3.19 low. Car weighs 2915 with driver, no ballast, on a 2910 minimum for E. Calvert split monos, 1 step lower than stock. Rancho RS9000 rear shocks set full stiff, Calvert front shocks. Old 6 cylinder springs with I think 1/2 coil cut off. Del-A-Lum bushings in control arms. Eddie Rezac linkage kit for zero bumpsteer.

How do your incrementals compare with a fast small block E/S car?

The 60' is about where I was running with a mediocre F/S 69 Camaro 255/350.

You can soften the compression damping those rear shocks some.

You can loosen the extension on the front shocks some.

Launch RPM?

Re: I want big wheelies

Alan, I'm not sure how the incrementals compare - I'll do some research at Topeka this weekend. I kind of posted this tongue-in-cheek, but I'm curious nevertheless. The front shocks are not adjustable, and the rears only on extension.
Maurice - I've left at 5800 and 6200 with no noticeable difference in 60'.

Have 52% or more on the back wheels.

Re: I want big wheelies

Use an "old school" clutch setup in it, with a 40 or 50# wheel.....it wont be the quickest but it will yank the front end the highest

Found this photo from last July's national open at MAM...

Looks better but was 3 tenths slower in the 1/8 at that time...changes since that day:
More power, fresh clutch, Calvert split monos, and replaced the Moroso springs (that I cut too far) with the original worn out 6 cylinder springs in front.
Oh, and new M/T 3056STs last September.

Big wheelstands are only possible with gapless rings. :)

Do you have a data logger on that car? Being able to dial in that first hit with an adjustable clutch is crucial for getting up on the tires. Some ballast in the rear would help too..

small wheelies are faster.

Ed is right, the higher u get the slower you will go. If the car keeps going up without moving forward you lose et.

Re: I want big wheelies

This wheelie didn't make our car quicker ET wise but it was fun! Also, the higher up you go there is also the issue of how to get the car to settle down and still make a good 1-2 shift with the four speed.

ding ding ding...................we have a winner!!!
Go fast, stay consistent, still be in on Sunday and win races........or............do big wheelies

Re: I want big wheelies

I would say springs are problem,6 cyl worn out springs, when jack the car up I'm going to guess the springs almost or do become loose,if that is the case front end extends and you run out of spring, they don't have any stored energy, when you pull engine probaly does'nt raise front of car all the way up against the stops.
You want springs that have to be compressed quite a bit to end install, but soft enough to let car down to ride height you want, like the moroso's
Then if you wheelie to big you can adjust, one thing is can raise starting line rpm sometimes and wheelie less,by puttting controled spin on at the hit.

Re: I want big wheelies

How much pinion angle do you have? More angle the better the wheelie.

I knew it!!!

Thanks for all the input fellas...I realize small ones are faster, this thread wasn't meant to be real serious, just wanted to get some ideas and be sure I'm not leaving something obvious on the table.
I think areas for improvement are launch rpm, front springs, and clutch setup first. No data logger yet, just a playback tach and videos for clutch guessing.

So long as the small wheelstand transfers enough weight to hook up the maximum amount of power and clutch, and does it both consistently and reliably.

Re: I want big wheelies

I think there is a big difference in a stick car and an automatic. An automatic likes to dead hook and if a stick car does that it usually pulls the motor down, although I've seen Jason McCormack do some huge wheelies. Our cars run faster when they leave with the wheels up in the air pretty good.
