Help find the history of this 64 Savoy Lightweight
Looking for missing history on this 1964 Savoy Stage III lightweight. The car campaigned in Texas possibly under the name Aggravation and was owned by a guy name Roland from Pasadena, TX. It has just over 1,500 miles on the odometer so it has had MANY passes on the car. It may have migrated from San Antonio as it was delivered new to Jack Rieger Chrysler Plymouth. Please SHARE THESE PHOTOS with your drag racing friends so we can potentially unravel it's history. The NHRA number was 4945
I have no information on the classes it may have ran. Note: Pinstriping in Red & Blue on the doors, C Pillar, trunk and above the doors. http://i60.tinypic.com/2lln1us.jpg http://i58.tinypic.com/s617rt.jpg |
Re: Help find the history of this 64 Savoy Lightweight
Anyone from down in that area remember this car?

Re: Help find the history of this 64 Savoy Lightweight
I can't help on your car. I bought a 1964 Plymouth that once was owned by Joe Ralph Thompson out of Arkansas. I was told by the people familiar with the car that the aluminum nose was made illegal for a while, so mine was converted into an AWB with the 1965 fiberglass nose, front bumper, doors and lightweight windows. That was done in early 1966. It might have run Stock or SS for a few years, then changed classes. My car ran in B/A, the sister car without the AWB ran in B/G. both with Hemis.
Big Joe Teuton might know the car. Joe Smith might also be a good source. |
Re: Help find the history of this 64 Savoy Lightweight
Joe doesn't remember the car. I also spoke with JD Feigelson who ran a 64 Hemi out of Beaumont. Not his car either. Having been around Pasadena I would assume it ran Houston International, Golden Triangle & Eastex. It was a divison 4 car.

Re: Help find the history of this 64 Savoy Lightweight
Bring this over to the Nostalgia forum.
Lots of old regulars there. The whole nostalgia forum began because of a search for the roots of a LO23 Hemi Dart. Still chasing that one. Hopefully we can have better luck with your's! |

e-mail Tom Kasch, he has a bunch of old programs and he might be able to look up the car number and go from there, I just looked into my data and came up blank

Re: Help find the history of this 64 Savoy Lightweight
No memory of that one. If I saw it I can't remember now. I did do an engine for one back about 69, but it was a Hemi and was owned by a guy in New Boston, TX Mark, (something) Brother-in-law to Bruce Caver. I think a local guy by the name of Danny Proctor bought it a few years ago and did a restoration on it.
He buys and sells, no telling where it is now. |
Re: Help find the history of this 64 Savoy Lightweight
Looks like that was a 65 Coronet Adger.

Re: Help find the history of this 64 Savoy Lightweight
Danny has done a couple of those cars and the one I did back in '69 was a Street Hemi.
I think that is another one Danny came up with. That or some town names got mixed up in the story. I know all the guys and can ask them the next time I see them. I run into Danny out eating from time to time. My wife just reminded me I had been hit in the head (race car wreck) and my memory might be way off.... LOL |
Re: Help find the history of this 64 Savoy Lightweight
Still looking for information & history on the car. Possibly owned or campaigned by a guy named Roland from Pasadena, TX.

Re: Help find the history of this 64 Savoy Lightweight
Back in the day there was a publication like National Dragster called Drag News. It covered races both NHRA/AHRA nationwide. You can still find individual weekly issues for sale on Ebay or there was a place called Standard 1320 Productions that put them on a CD. Don't know if their still in business. Hope this helps, Rick

Re: Help find the history of this 64 Savoy Lightweight
I think that Drag News has been defunct for about 30 years.
They were out of Orange County, Calif. by Guy Bennett. I am not sure they did a lot of Back East Bracket Stuff. |
Re: Help find the history of this 64 Savoy Lightweight
Man, what a cool car! If I owned it I might park it in my living room and watch it instead of TV. What are you going to do with it?
|
Re: Help find the history of this 64 Savoy Lightweight
I own quite a few of those along with the Eastern Drag News. I've also watched countless hours of cars drag racing on youtube in the Texas area.
I know it's just going to take that ONE person to recognize it. With 1,500 rounds on the odometer it should be a car that many have seen go down the track. Quote:

Re: Help find the history of this 64 Savoy Lightweight
Well, first it's not mine :-) It's a friends car. I really enjoy the researching the history of cars. It's a passion of mine. There's not much better of a feeling than when you can connect a current owner with an original owner of someone from the past who hasn't thought about the car years.
We'd like to find it's history and restore the car back to how it was Day 1. We know it was delivered to Jack Rieger Chrysler Plymouth per Darrell Davis' book on 1964 Stage III and Supercommando cars. Could it have been dealer traded out of there? Possible. We also know that the car was located in Pasadena, TX in the late 80's and featured the Division 4 lettering you see in the pics. I've been in touch with all the Division 4 people (Tech administrators, archivists,) and some vaguely remember the car but can't fully identify who may have owned it. There records on the taped numbers go back to 1990 and this number had already been given to another car at that time. So, this car ran that number prior to 1990. Quote:

Re: Help find the history of this 64 Savoy Lightweight
In the quest to document this car over the years, I've taken up challenge of finding ownership lineage on all of the Stage III and Hemi Savoy's from 64 delivered new with BBI (Ebony) paint and a Red interior.
After two successful phone calls yesterday, I"ve now talked with all 6 of the original Hemi owners. For the record, 6 Hemi cars and 7 Stage III cars came in this color configuration in 64. Still looking for info on 5 of the Stage III cars. If you have ANY photo's of Black 64 Plymouths campaigning I would really appreciate you posting them here. I have a series of undocumented cars that appear or are Black that need identification. I will post those this evening when I have more time. Thanks! Wes |
Re: Help find the history of this 64 Savoy Lightweight
That car may have belonged to a guy by the name Boyd Jenkins and was driven by Dickie Simpson back in the day!!! They were down in that area.

Re: Help find the history of this 64 Savoy Lightweight
I raced a white 64 savoy around central Texas and don't remember seeing this car.
Is your friend wanting to sell the car or is he planning to restore it? JimR |
Re: Help find the history of this 64 Savoy Lightweight
Harmie, You may be on to something. I remember a Dickie Simpson, but can't remember his car.

Re: Help find the history of this 64 Savoy Lightweight

Check Facebook group "Arkansas Drag Racers and Dragstrips Past and Present"
Check Jackie Lewis's post. Cville Dragway Johnny goodnoh from mulberry ark. Marty drove. This was hemi powered. They later had a volare with a hemi and lenco Trans that held centervilledragway track record for several years. Craig Stevens owns the volare now . Cville Dragway This car had those long collector extensions that blew the tire smoke when he did a burnout. I loved to watch him do a burnout |
Re: Help find the history of this 64 Savoy Lightweight
Byron Simpson kindly responded to my query. Seems his dad had a Blue 64 Wedge and an Orange 64 Hemi.
Both cars would be counted out due to the fact that the car in question still retains it's factory Black paint. Hey, but at least a couple more cars are eliminated! I'm starting to think this car must have been a ghost.... |
Re: Help find the history of this 64 Savoy Lightweight
