Getting to lansing michigan from Northeast Best route?

I am going to Michigan to look at a truck(possibly for GT use) from Mass will be driving by car/truck.

90 all the way to south Michigan and up is around 860 miles

84 to 81 to 80 to south michigan and up is around 870 miles

90 over the border in Niagara into Canada and crossing back in port huron area is around 784 miles.

Opinions?

Thanks

Eric

If you're going to go through Canada, be sure you have a passport.

This time of year the border crossings will have relatively short wait times...just be sure to top off your gas tank in the Buffalo area before crossing over. If you plan on taking a pet with you then get your vet to prepare a health certificate.

What he said. Another reason to mourn 9/11. Crossing through Canada used to be something you could do with minimal documentation and on a moment's notice. Now you have to have a passport or other border-crossing documentation and that requires advance planning.

Be sure to watch the weather forecasts for the Buffalo area.

Lewiston Queenston Bridge< Lewiston NY a lot less snow possibilities than Peace Bridge in Buffalo.

Do not try to cross the border with an empty trailer , personal experience your results may vary , good luck ---Trevor

Its not much fun crossing with a loaded trailer either. Whatever you do if you bring it back through Canada. Make sure you have a title or its next to impossible to get a car in.

Eric,

This may sound like a joke, but it's not. I know you have dogs. The US will not let you back in with dog food. They took it away from a friend of mine and threw it in the dumpster; treated him like a criminal.

Greg

As for the joke, I was going to say, "Ya cain't get theya from heya", but I'm not from Maine!

Never had an issue as long as you have documents with where your from to where your going. The Border Patrol can check the time your in Canada and if its close to travel time typically no issue. Be sure to inform them that your passing through to Detroit / Port Huron and know the route.

I'm going to suggest you look at I-84 to I-81 to I-80. Stay on I-80 at least to Toledo, go north on 23. Depending on the time of day when you hit Ann Arbor you can stay on 23 north to I-96, or go west on I-94 to I-69 then north to Lansing. You could even stay on I-80/90 to I-69 then go north to Lansing.
My credentials? I've lived in Michigan 25 years now, travel to PA/NJ or other NE points 2 or 3 times a year. I-80 is a straighter road with easier grades and less traffic than I-90.

I have to dispute that a bit, Marty. I-80 in PA is down one hill and up the next, versus I-90 in NY, which has one hard pull about 30 miles west of Albany, and a similar down hill about 20 miles past that. Other than that, it is quite flat. The drawbacks to I-90 are the tolls and lake-effect snow on the western end of NY. I would agree that it might be worth running the extra miles to avoid dealing with the border.

Got back a couple of hours ago. Left yesterday am 3.20 arrived via 90 route(didn't go through canada) at 4:15 PM 835 miles. Ohio has some nice roads and maybe the nicest rest area on the turnpike I have seen! Stayed the night in Cleveland then straight back.

A 100% drama free drive.

Ironically driving to Michigan seemed easier much than going to Atco or Englishtown!

Eric
