30x9 Radial Slick For Brackets
 

I'm getting ready to buy some 30x9 Hoosier Radial slicks for our bracket car. I would try the MT's, but the new ones are projected available in Feb. Our 1st points race is in Feb.


Anyway, I'm looking at the Hoosier's, but don't know whether to get the C07 compound or the lightweight ones with C06 compound.


Any information on these tires would be appreciated! I hope to get at least 100 passes out of them.


The car is a 1980 Camaro, 3,100 lbs., transbrake, 600 hp sbc, & runs 10 flat.

Why do you want the radials to bracket race?

i know there are some "bracket radials" that are coming out, but the current 9" radials from all three big tire companies are specifically made towards stock eliminator type racing. With light burnouts, you should get the 100 passes with the regular radials, but I would not expect it from the light weight radials. I have used both of the Hoosiers. The radials are quicker, but not very forgiving on a marginal track. When a radial spins, then spin bad... a bias might slip and hook. That is one of the reasons that very few manual trans stockers run radials.

I have a 67 Firebird G/CM stocker. 3450 lbs and less hp, 3 speed with 5200 stall. I keep radials and bias tires in the trailer. I Bracket race this car a lot, and use the bias tires for bracket racing. I have also put them on when running stock, on hot tracks. The bias tires are cheaper, and will get a lot more passes. There are some fast stockers with your HP and some super stockers with t-brakes and more HP that run radials, and do it well. They have a lot of money in a very maxed out suspension to be able to do this well. Not saying that your car is not capable, just not sure why you want to.

There are some others that will jump in here with good comments and more experience than me, but I am just giving my experience and opinions.

I was lucky to get 30 passes out of the radials before they went away. The bias plys on the bracket car would last 3-4 seasons and would hook with the cords hanging out of them.

There are a few bracket racer's that are doing very well with Hoosier radials. I figured I would give them a try. I will still have my 29.5x9 MT's if I don't like the radials. They will both be taken to the track.


As for the light burnouts. I already have to do them with the MT's. The L8 compound doesn't like a lot of heat. I got about 50 runs on the 1st set. I have around 100 on the 2nd set by doing a very light burnout.


Also, we are using a 1.76 glide. We are moving the car from S/Pro to Pro this year. Not sure if we'll use the transbrake or go back to footbraking.

Goodyear 4457 : going on 200 runs in 3400# car, 585 LBS/ FT, low 30s in 60', 10 .0s at Class Nationals, two final rounds at the local track in Pro.

Go with c07 compound for. Brackets. We usually get 150+ runs on them. Most of the footbrake cars in our area run radials.

Been using Hoosier 18209, CO6, 30"x9" for 6 seasons. Switched from bias to cure a sidewall clearance issue in a 3150 lb. [running 10.80's], bracket car. Factory G-Body rear suspension, with aftermarket parts...200+ passes over 2 seasons, and still producing consistant 1.49-1.52, 60 ft. Best move we ever made!!

For what it's worth:
When I was running my 72 Chevelle regularly bracket racing in Pro Footbreaking a few years back going to Hoosier 9x30 Radial was the best thing I did. The 10x29 Bias was nowhere near as consistent and the radial and always hooked: 1.48 - 1.52 60ft.. Car weight 3100; 377; glide, stock suspension done up like an old style stockerwith slapper bars and air bags. Mid 10 second car has gone high 10.30s in good air 124-127 MPH.
You will get at least 100 runs and switching side to side every 10-15 runs is good.

Seems like the popular radial is the Hoosier. I'm not counting out the Goodyear yet. I have about another week to decide.

I'm with Larry on the Goodyears. I've run Hoosiers, Mickey's-- bias and radials-- and I've never been more impressed with the quality and performance of a tire. We put a set on our stocker in August of 2013. Haven't kept track of how many runs, but we've got plenty on that set.
I put them on my car at the end of this past season. 1.30 sixty foot three runs in a row at a marginal track in cccold weather (low 40's). I swear the wear holes were close to 3/8" deep when they were new. Still plenty left to go. I'll be buying a set for my car in the spring. Then all three cars will have GY 4457's.

Well, right or wrong I ordered my radial slicks. When I started this post I was intending on getting the Hoosier's, but wanted to keep an open mind. I would have considered MT, but like I said their release date was Feb.

I almost changed my mind to run the Goodyear's, but decided on the Hoosier 30x9 R15, C06 compound, lightweight.

Anyway, with the MT 29.5x9 bias tires we pulled 1.40 60's with 70 runs on them & probably have another 30 runs left. When they were fresh we could go 1.38-39 60'.


If anybody cares or would like to hear about the performance of the new tires. I would be more than happy share the information when I get some in Feb.

Anybody have any input on the shock adjustments for the radials?

This is our shock settings for the bias ply slicks. QA1 stocker star shocks, DA on the rear & SA on the front. #1 setting being loose & #18 being stiff. Currently the rears are set at #5 for the rebound & #10 for the compression. The front is on the #1 setting.

I think I'll try the above setting to start. Then loosen the rebound 1 click at a time & tighten the compression the same way for the rear. The front may have to be tightened. Is this the correct thinking/direction to go when switching from bias to radial?

I was a little apprehensive on using radial slicks for bracket racing. I'm glad I made the decision to use them!

While I had a great racing year, better than planned. The radials played a good part in my success.

Our home track is The Strip in Las Vegas, NV. Most of our racing was done in the daytime with some pretty hot track temps. We also ran in CA. & UT.

We made around 125 runs this year. We had 2 passes that we spun & that was my fault. The 1st time was on cold less than stellar track prep, but not bad by any means. We was using a launch retard, because I thought that was needed for the conditions. My 1 son had made his 1st pass & ran a 9.92 @ 136. He wanted to go into the 80s & I told them the track will not hold it. So, both my sons were admit that I turn off the launch retard. We were rewarded with our 1st spin on the radials, LOL!

The 2nd spin was at the Las Vegas Thanksgiving race. Temps were below freezing during the night. My 1st run early in the morning (track not very warm) I spun. I attribute this spin to not enough burnout. We do a very short burnout & it works great in the heat. We started doing more burnout for the rest of the race & had no problems.

We did try the Goodyear's near the end of the season...virtually no difference between them and the Hoosier. I've heard claims of better longevity for the Goodyear, but only time will prove that.

would a radial slick be similar to running a stiff side wall bias slick? I would like a stiff side wall on my stick Vette but tire clearance is a problem. I thought maybe trying a radial slick like the Hoosier 18210. Any thoughts?

I've ran the stiff sidewall bias slick & there's little to no comparison with the radial slick.

M/T makes a Pro Bracket Radial. Might be worth looking into. Fast like a Radial with the longevity of a Bias Ply. They just came out this past spring.

Yea I just read that they are more forgiving than a regular radial. I will look the pro bracket radial.

My Nephew used them all season this year on a 10.80's bracket car. (28x10.5) He got 316 passes on the first set & only changed them because he was heading to the million. Fast & consistent.
