I first started going to the US Nationals as a kid in the late 1980s. I remember his voice well and always enjoyed listening to him announce. May he rest peacefully.

Re: RIP Leo Taugher

Leo had a real passion for class racing and the Performance aspect of it all. He really enjoyed and respected it. That showed in his accurate and thoughtful approach to announcing. I will say also that no announcer that I have ever heard. ( out of the many excellent ones out there) knew more about the racing families as well. it was pretty much his trademark to not only inform the audience about the cars, but also to note the many family members that make up the typical sportsman teams. He knew so many by name. It really spoke to his skill as an announcer and his passion for the sport and the sportsman.
RIP Leo!

Re: RIP Leo Taugher

Leo was among the top 5 best drag racing announcers I have ever listened to, he didn't have to use slap stick comedy in his announcing, he told you who was up there, what car, motor, hp at times and sponsors if they was some painted on the car. RIP my dear friend, all is good.

Re: RIP Leo Taugher

I have known Leo since he was the track announcer at Quaker City. He was good then and even better as our Division 3 and National announcer as has been stated. I could tell he was not doing good when we went to see him, but I hoped for the best .RIP my friend, you already have been missed.
Gene McBean & family.

Another good one gone. Leo knew more about Sock, Super Stock, and Comp than any announcer I ever heard. Not only did he know the classes he knew the people. He knew the wives or husbands, the crew members, the sponsors. What a great guy. It was my pleasure to know Leo. RIP old friend.

I was a true fan of Mr. Taugher, and couldn't wait to hear him and Allan do the Sportsman play by play over the NHRA Audiocast. He was to Sportsman Drag Racing, what Al Michaels is to Baseball/Football in my opinion RIP

Re: RIP Leo Taugher

I am really getting tired of losing people I know well and enjoy being with way before their time.

In many ways, Leo reminded me of Lynne Nickerson - he knew everybody and he really enjoyed announcing class racing. I always enjoyed working a race where either of these fine gentlemen was on the microphone.

Now both are gone, losing their battles with Cancer after a long, hard fight.

RIP Leo, they should have a nice selection of Cadillacs where you are going. And RIP Lynne, we haven't forgotten you.

Re: RIP Leo Taugher

Well, once again we have lost one of the greats of our sport............. Leo was the King of announcers not only for the sportsman ranks but was doing a great job announcing the Pro's. No one was as close to the Sportsman Racers and Family's as several have mentioned. Always a smile and a great Marine handshake. We were both born in Salem and he was just as great at Quaker City announcing where I began in 1968. Just wish I could see him one more time.....................just like the rest. RIP

Very sorry to hear of Leo's passing, got to work with Leo only one time at Maple Grove's national event several years ago. We chatted off mike during a rain delay for at least an hour. He was everything that all of you have stated in this post about him, a very fine announcer and he will be missed! RIP

Re: RIP Leo Taugher

I knew this day was coming but it doesn’t make it any easier. Leo was one of my favorite people and I will miss him dearly. I first met Leo when he introduced himself to me with a great big “Good Luck” hug at the 2006 GatorNationals. After making it to the final round at that race, I made it a ritual at every race we both attended to get my big Leo hug.

When I won my first NHRA event at the Bowling Green Divisional, Leo was there for my Winner’s Circle Picture. The picture hangs on my wall and I can see it as I write this. Leo was a great supporter of the Sportsman racer and a fantastic announcer.

RIP Leo. I miss you!
Brenda

Re: RIP Leo Taugher

Far too many of the good ones leaving the sport and Leo was a good one. Never met the man but on the live broadcasts and at the track, he knew Comp, Stock, Super Stock and the Super classes. He spoke with authority, with clarity and you knew he knew the contestants and their families. Thanks for the education Leo and may you rest in a better place!

Leo Taugher the best at what he did. I think Leos favorite thing to announce was Modified Eliminator. to hear him at Magnolia Drag Strip on a Saturday Night was something else.

So many great times at Quaker City , and as others have said he truly knew the cars and the families behind them . When we started racing the NHRA stuff , he would still look us up and make us feel welcome to be there as if it was at Quaker City , truly a great man . He will always be one of my Icons of the sport I love .

RIP LEO

Re: RIP Leo Taugher

Leo was my friend and like so many have said we seem to be sending a lot of them to the great dragway in the sky. Well now they have their announcer. A fellow Marine we always gave each other a salute when we saw one another. I'm blessed to have a cd of my final round appearance from Norwalk 2008 so I can always play that and hear his voice. R.I.P. my friend.
