1965 chevelle super stock owners

I am trying to locate my old 1965 Chevelle, that I built in 1972 as a SS/P car, later NHRA in shuffling classes around, it became, SS/M. After I built my 1966 Chevy 2, SS/K car 1978, I sold the Chevelle to Mike Short, of Pine Village Indiana. He raced it until about 1982 or so, until he was badly injured in a motorcycle accident. Sadly Mike passed away about 2 years ago. I have spoken to his widow, she did provide me with some pictures of the car as Mike raced it, and copies of the paper work, when I sold him the car. The car was a light metallic blue when Mike raced it. His wife thought he sold it in the early 80's, to someone there in Indiana. The paper work did provide me with the VIN number 458 37K 171 439. So all you racers that have a 1965 Chevelle, check your VIN, you may have It. When I had the car, it was a many time national class winner, Division 5 runner up twice, and in 1977, I beat Judy Lilly for the Division 5 championship.

There is a Chevelle in division 1 which is the same color and had the old cragar wheels like your picture shows that he replaced a couple of years ago. It is the Jim Fontana SS car that won E-Town national event last year.

Re: 1965 chevelle super stock owners

VIN number 45837K171439 would be the serial number on a 1964 Chevelle SS built in Kansas City. Early on it was not unusual for 1964 Chevelles to be switched over to 1965 models. The main reason was for several years only 10 bolt rearends were allowed in 1964 Chevelles while in the 1965 model year a 12 bolt rear was allowed.

Travis,
You are correct, it does have a 1964 title, as that is what I used to build it. By changing the front clip, and number of other things, I did race it as a 1964 at times. As you know in those days we could not add, or subtract weight, or weigh with the driver. So we did what we had to do, to fit the class. I was at a further disadvantage because I weighed about 225# in those days, while most of my national competition drivers, were about 110# to 125#. Just ask my good friends, Jimmie Bridges, or Rodger Rosebush, what they weighed in those days. One of the best things NHRA did in the late 70's was to weigh with the driver, and add or subtract a little weight. It wasn't as much as it is now but it helped guys like me a whole bunch.

Hope you can find it, Eddie. I'm pretty sure where the '64 front clip ended up. ;).

Thanks for the post guys... That orange 65 Chevelle from Division 1 in the recent photo is owned by myself, and my father Jim Fontana. I was contacted by a friend when he noticed this post on classracer, and he asked me if it was the one we owned. I didn't think so, but I wanted to ask my father just in case. As I suspected, he was positive it isnt the 65 Chevelle you're looking for. My dad Jim bought our car in 1974, and it was a street car. The guy he bought it from drove it to my dads house, and its been a racecar, and in my dads possession ever since. It was powder blue and a black interior (its an original SS). It started as a stocker, and then in the mid 80's my dad started running it in Super Stock. Its been in Super Stock ever since. It is nice to know that there are a handful of other 65 chevelle super stockers out there!!

I added a few recent photos from this year of the car, as well as a photo of my dad racing it back in the 70's when it was a stocker.

Thanks for the shout out Ronny!! See you and Scott this season!

The one on the left is Bob Cupp. I know it's not that one, we drug it off the back lot of the Chevy dealership we worked at around 69-70 or so.

Appears it has wheel lip moldings on it. Might help identify it now.

I am still looking for this Chevelle (my old race car) It is a 1964, changed into 1965. One quick way to identify it, is by the tail light mountings, they are held in by only the outside trim, so that it was easy to change between the 2 years, along with the front clip, and dash. The Vin number is, 458 37K 171 439 . Mike Short, of Pine Village Indiana was the last known owner that I know of.

There used to be a guy who bracket raced a '65 that color at US 41 and RT 66. He was from northern Indiana, I think his name was Troy. He did cylinder heads under the name THP if I remember right.

Anyway, good luck finding your car. I have a soft spot for the old Chevelles too.

There is one that is being raced in Nostalgia S/S. It is butternut yellow, has Cragar Super Tricks, looks like the pictures of yours from Indy. I don't know who owns or drives it but it was running at last years Hot Rod Reunion in Bowling Green. It was driven by a female and if I remember right she either won or runner uped in N/SS at that race. You might want to try to ID that car.

I had a '65 Chevelle convertible, built from a '64. Reasons were the 12 bolt, and the '64 250 hp 327" had 520 heads, the '65 got 461/462 heads. 1.94" Intake valves versus 1.750", and port volume. Also the 4GC carb versus the WCFB. I back-to-backed the carbs. That alone was enough to use it as a '65.

Steve's car sold about 10-12 years ago it was a 64. Lynn Engels in Watertown SD bought it. He then sold it to another gentleman in the area. Then the car ended up in Kentucky all redone and beautiful looking. The name is escaping me at the moment of who bought it though. It was run as a 4 speed car for a season or two as well. It was a pretty good car and very easy to drive.
