IHRA Pure Stock Trans question (Rules)
Trying to finish up my 94 Mustang for IHRA Pure Stock, and have a question concerning the rules.
They specify, (for automatic transmission), that it may not be modified except for the addition of an aftermarket shift kit. My question is, can I convert my valvebody to full manual and it be legal? I would like to disable the electronic control portion of the valve body, and in reality, doing so is nothing more than installing a shift kit. There is not a performance advantage, because if it's not legal, I can still control every function of the trans through the computer tune and make it work the same way. Just trying to eliminate some tuning hassles, and stay legal at the same time. |
Re: IHRA Pure Stock Trans question (Rules)
79 views and no answer, lol. To make it easier to answer, for the guys already running the class with older cars, Chevys, etc. Did you retain full automatic capabilities, or modify so that it only shifts manually?

Re: IHRA Pure Stock Trans question (Rules)
Tony, I don't think that a shift kit and a valve body change are looked at as being equivalent. You could ask Mike Baker at IHRA, but I'd be surprised if it was ok to do that. I'm running an AODE as well, and theoretically an auto-shift would be the way to go....if you could get the trans to shift like you want with the computer...........

Re: IHRA Pure Stock Trans question (Rules)
I can definitely tune the trans to shift at whatever shift points I want with stock ecm. As far as the other extreme, it would just be the stock valve body with modifications to make it manual. Not much different than a shift kit. Thanks for the answer though.

Re: IHRA Pure Stock Trans question (Rules)
If your running the Florida races, I say no.
Out side of Fla. do what ever you want. |
Re: IHRA Pure Stock Trans question (Rules)
Lol. I want to be legal There is no performance advantage, because as I already said, I can tune the trans to shift at any rpm and with whatever firmness I want through the tune. I can even set it up to shift each gear at the push of a button, it's a computer controlled trans, lol. I'm just trying to save time and money by controlling it manually. I guess the grey area comes down to what qualifies as a shift kit. I'll email Mike, just didn't want to bother him if someone already knew the answer.

Email sent to Mike Baker. We'll see what he says.

Re: IHRA Pure Stock Trans question (Rules)
Mike has already replied. Should have done that to begin with, lol

Re: IHRA Pure Stock Trans question (Rules)
What is the answer ?

Re: IHRA Pure Stock Trans question (Rules)
and his lengthy reply to me was one word
yes |
Re: IHRA Pure Stock Trans question (Rules)
Truthfully, it may be a disadvantage to do it, considering everything can be controlled through the computer, I just want one less thing to tune, lol.

Re: IHRA Pure Stock Trans question (Rules)
Interesting response, I would have thought he would have said no. For on track consistency, I would think you would want to keep the tune in the controller. Good Luck !

Re: IHRA Pure Stock Trans question (Rules)
Wow, you never know unless you ask I guess. Good to know. I guess you're putting in an aftermarket shifter ?
|
Re: IHRA Pure Stock Trans question (Rules)
And I may keep it, but at least I now know what my options are. And truthfully, on a Ford, a mvb is not far away from just being a shift kit.

Re: IHRA Pure Stock Trans question (Rules)
I installed a Baumann AODE shift kit in my 95 GT and what a difference it made.
That trans shifts dead on the same point every run now. Of course I am using a stock converter so I do not know if that makes any difference, but I am very pleased with that AODE. Now that I know that a MVB is legal in PS, that opens up more possibilities. |
Re: IHRA Pure Stock Trans question (Rules)
Alan, have you tried adjusting shift points and line pressure in your tune? I am still on the fence of doing a manual valve body, or using the computer. The Bauman kit is probably the best bolt in "shift kit" for these trannies, and they make a great aftermarket controller also, but if I am going to stay computer controlled, I will used the tried and true "Jerry-Mod" on the valvebody. I actually have all of the J-Mod upgrades sitting here ready to put in the trans, and the Moates Quarterhorse and Binary Editor I'm using for tuning will change any shift function I want it too, so I may just go that way first and see how it acts.
Next step for me is to plop down the $1000 for a multi disc lock up convertor...... |
Re: IHRA Pure Stock Trans question (Rules)
Tony:
I have a 100% factory tune in my car. I have never hooked up anything to the factory ecu. After I installed the Baumann kit it now shifts @ 5200 every run. Plus, I can still manually shift it if I want. ( at any rpm) I just need a ratchet shifter to make it safer to hit the gears. In a some what related note (or maybe it's not)..this is what I found out about the 94-95 Mustangs. You might want to check your throttle body opening with the gas pedal all the way to the floor. My TB would not open up 100% until I removed the carpet and sound deadener under the pedal. Before, it was like 90 % opened and my car was inconsistent. I removed the carpet under it and now it's 100% opened every time I stab the pedal. :) Whether or not having inconsistent throttle blade openings affected the shift points I do not know, but I feel confident having the blade opened 100% every run has helped the computer in regards to the electronic shift points. |
Re: IHRA Pure Stock Trans question (Rules)
Great info! While checking, did you check your TPS sensor to make certain it was set correctly?
Time for you to grab a tuner for that thing, lol. |
Re: IHRA Pure Stock Trans question (Rules)
For those that may be interested, here is why I felt all along that the MVB conversion would be legal. The rules state shift kit only. Trans Go makes a shift kit that converts the valvebody to full manual control.
http://www.transgo.com/products.php?...2&prod_start=2 I'm still undecided about how I want to control mine, manual or by computer, but did buy my convertor today. |
