LIVE. from Richmond IHRA Div 1 Summit Pro-Am

Good crowd on hand here at Johnny Davis's Richmond Dragway in Sandsyon, VA. As with all IHRA events, you can watch live video on MotorManiaTV.com. This weekend, my good friend and former co-worker at Quaker City Raceway and Staging Light Graphics, Matt Zapp is on the mic.

The announced plan is to get ahead of even any potential weather: run Saturday's race to completion, then 1 qualifying run and first round eliminations of Sunday's race tonight, then ginish tomorrow. Suits me, with a 9+ hr ride home!

Re: LIVE. from Richmond IHRA Div 1 Summit Pro-Am

They had a some heavy rain last night, and this afternoon's sun has percolated the moisture up through the track surface, so we've been on hold. Just one of those things you have to wait out, but we'll have some comfortable night racing tonight. Stock and Super Stock got both sessions in. Lane to lane the car ran exactly what it should. The air was 1,900' DA this morning, rising just a little this afternoon.

IHRA Tech spot checked a number of things this weekend, including hood scoops and intakes on some combinations, and checked all cars for loose ballast at the scales during the 2nd qualifying run.

Thanks Mike. Did they ever make a decision about the 2nd race?

The second race was cancelled and everyone had his or her entry-fee refunded. The Nitro Jam/Pro-Am at Maryland International Raceway, originally scheduled for June 19-21 as a single claiming event, will now be a double for both Division 1 and 9.

Iwas just wondering in the finals of stock how did Walton on the tree leave the last yellow on and no green or red ? the cars before him left on green and after him. Was something wrong with the tree when he ran ? Racing for 46 yrs ive never seen this happen to me or any one else. thanks DON THE WORM ELGIN

Walton was .0000 on the tree, i've never seen the tree do that before.

Wow, I just saw a picture of that from the Motor Mania TV coverage. Third yellow stayed on, no green, no red. I guess a QUAD zip RT confuses the tree. Thank God that didn't happen in our lane, lmfao.

It was a long and sometimes frustrating weekend, but I just want to commend the Richmond Dragway staff. They did a great job with what they were confronted with, and were probably the friendliest bunch I've ever encountered, from the credential trailer to the concession stand to the owner.

You're not saying there would've been all kinds of conspiracy theories if that had been your lane are you? Lol

I saw the same thing, last yellow on, didn't see the red light, figured Walton went red and they announced it was perfect light. In the quarters there was a -.0007 red by one of the Ross cars. Beard got pinched by another .000 light in the semi's of SS. Some tight racing going on in IHRA land.

Re: LIVE. from Richmond IHRA Div 1 Summit Pro-Am

When I worked as announcer at our local track in 2012-2013, a driver had a quad-zero perfect reaction time (.0000) in the Friday night final, and same thing. Third amber stayed on, no red, no green. He lifted, thinking he went red, and lost. He was offered a re-run, but declined it. It might be an AccuTime thing.

I agree. It was probably an even longer weekend for the race operators as it was for the racers.

Dan Fletcher 04-20-2015 12:42 PM

Re: LIVE. from Richmond IHRA Div 1 Summit Pro-Am

You're absolutely correct. It is an Accu-time thing. I just got off the phone with Skooter at IHRA and he explained it fully.

This is messed up, but you can have a .0000 red light OR green light, but in neither case will the red or green be illuminated. A .0000 RT results in the bottom yellow staying on, period. If its a "green" light, the race is on. If its a "red" light, the lucky recipient's score board will light up.

If the result was a .0000 "green", the bottom yellow staying on could clearly create an issue for either competitor. Both could make judgments or take action thinking the race was over when it wasn't. This obviously needs to be addressed (although I'm sure a .0000 RT doesn't come up too often).

With that said, this situation had ZERO bearing on our run, at least from our perspective. I can't speak for Mr. Walton, but given the outcome, I'm thinking he was OK with it. And given the multiple Scotty's he liberally distributed throughout the shutdown, I'm sure of it...

Re: LIVE. from Richmond IHRA Div 1 Summit Pro-Am

So a track with an Accu-time system puts the racer at the mercy of a "glitch". This should automatically justify a re-run.

Just my opinion....

There is no glitch. Timing systems operate with more digits than what you are shown on the timeslip. The Accutime system operates exactly as Dan described. I'd heard about it before. Johnny Davis, the track owner, has seen it a number of times, and even standing trackside knew that Anthony was .0000 when he saw it.

I have seen a .500 red on a Compulink, which is a .49999999. Try explaining that one to the racer! That was a Bracket Finals event many years ago. We had to call Brockmeyer on that one, but he confirmed that it can happen and how/when the computer will do rounding just for the sake of the timeslip printer, but it remains < .500, and is therefore a redlight. I've also seen a .00000056 MOV in a Super Rod final round (Compulink). I can't remember the operations on how they dig into the system to reveal the additional digits, but got the information for the doing the race coverage.

Yeah, it was a very competitive weekend. I think I gave it up .000x twice (got away with it once), Jim Reynolds was .000 on me (which was the other time, so I was losing that one regardless! LOL), Zac Ross was -.0007 red to Fletcher. Anthony Walton took .000x finish on one run, gave it up .000x on another, and was .0000 on the tree once.

We watched that race from the starting line and were confused by what happened we thought the red lamp had burned out. I can see that effecting the outcome of the race possibly.

"In this case"? No such thing happened. There's even video of the run, so I don't understand why anyone would fabricate something demonstrably false in order to try to put someone's win in a negative light.
