Pure Stock making a come back!

WOW just saw Chris Kilraine H/PS Mustang posted on Facebook.
Very clean and fast ... !

New entries for next year will be Dave Hoffer building a F-G/PS Aspen
and Frank Meyer building a 95 Firebird for B-C-D/PS

Saw the beautiful A/PS Plymouth of Phillip B(sorry I do not know how to spell his name properly) at Empire.

Met a lot of people at Empire discussing future of Pure Stock.

Looking at creating a Pure Stock Facebook page.

Also want to create contact list with all the Pure Stock Owners in the country.
Name, address, email, Car.
Have most pictures but new ones would be cool.
Then distribute contract list to the members.

Keep the hope alive...

Just remember Pure Stockers are PURE :D

Till some joker learns how to manipulate the system, then you'll have P/S cars with 14X32s,blowers etc.

There were going to be 4, but during testing 3 weeks ago, my Pure Stocker ran a tick over the index on a testing day with 89 deg. and moderate humidity at legal weight.
It was consistent, but ran 14.56-14.59 in the heat on a 14.55 index.

So I felt it would not be competitive unless it could run at least .15 under index.

Then... the weather was perfect at the Class Nationals and we had fantastic air for the event. ( face palm) lol

Probably would have run 14.40's at National Trail.

Would have supported another Pure Stock Challenge but IHRA ProAm was at Empire at same time.

Last year had 3 A/PS and 3 D/PS cars competing..plus 5 others racing.

Maybe next year.
Seems if you put a little skin in the game the Pure Stockers come out to play.

As for blowers ..do not think that will happen.
Unless maybe a certain turbo 4 Tbird decides to run PS..
Right now keeping a Stock Spring is our saving grace.
For all the conversation it keep our cars reliable!

Sure would like to up the $$pot and get help from others next year.
We got a lot of good press last year!

Jerry welcome back to Pure Stock.
Ping TarHeal who has a 2001 Vette in B/PS.
First go to the NHRA web site and grab the car specs and classification sheets.
Contact Mike Baker at IHRA to verify the HP and Class for PS?

Most normal street bolt on apply until you run under 11.50 requiring a Roll Bar.
All convertibles will need a Roll Bar.
So you will need a roll bar.

We are allowed a Blueprinted Cam.
Sometimes IHRA and NHRA will specify a different cam for your application.

Not sure why. Just the way it is!

Bullet Cams has been a key vendor who works with Mike Baker on specs and details.

Interesting good tune, gears, sticky tires and converter can get most cars running under the index.

Jerry...feel free to email me at work if you have more questions?

Thanks Dan, I will start checking things out. Need to check out the roll bar I assume it needs to be welded in.

If there was a way to get a hard top vette you would not need it.
At least until you grab power and start running 11.50s.

Re: Pure Stock making a come back!

Needless to say when I bought it I didnt have this in mind but I thought it might be fun.
I still would like to street it some so I guess it depends on how far I want to go.
I did call Mike and he said it would be A/PS and it looks like 3320 with driver. He is looking at the specs said he would get back with me.

Contact Wolfe Racecraft in Fort Worth, Texas Jerry about a roll bar. I put one of their 6-point bolt-in bars in this summer and now we're legal to 10.0. Very easy to install, fit and finish was PERFECT, and the whole job took less than 8 hours. You'll need to weld the bars that come up from the cargo area to the main hoop (Wolfe provides bolts for them) to be NHRA/IHRA legal but with a convertible that will be easy (as will the installation).

With a good set of headers, converter, gear, tune, CAI and lighter wheels and drag radials (or slicks) that will be a competitive car. If you wanted to get really serious and put a cam in it and go crazy it would flat fly.

We can run 1 second under the B/PS index and still drive the car on the street with the AC, etc. all still operable.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. We've done a lot of research on the Corvette and LS platform and can lead you in the right direction to what works and what is a waste of time and money.

Thanks for the info Scott, especially the part of bolting in the roll bar, its hard for me to picture the rear bars in the convertible, not much room for the angle ? I have watched you progress with yours.

As I was typing my earlier response Jerry I was thinking I'm not sure how the rear bars would look or work on a convertible. I've never owned one and honestly have never inspected one closely. I do know though that Wolfe makes one specific for that so it can be done. I can't emphasis enough how nice their bar was or how easy it was to install; and I'm not the brightest bulb in the pack.

I would love to get my hands on a LS2 or LS3. The LS crowd raves about how much more power those make so you shouldn't have any trouble running that index. We ran a couple tenths under before we even put headers on the car and it still had the factory heavy wheels. They respond very well to mods.

We're currently on a mission to run 9s in street trim with the stock bottom end and a little nitrous so I'm not sure how much Class Racing we will do but it's still near and dear to my heart and I will always follow it closely. Maybe one day we will build another LS1 Pure Stocker since my wife drives the Corvette most of the time now and I don't get to drive much.

Good Morning Dan

You seem to be the guru with regards to Pure Stock

I'm looking into a 2014 Ford V6 Mustang for Pure Stock.

The engine is the 3.7 V6 @ 305 HP (Advertised).

Curb Weight is 3,501 (Advertised)

What classification should it be, H/PS or I/PS?

Thanks, Tom

Hello Tom;
Not sure. Ping Mike Baker at IHRA.
However, Think it will run round E/PS with what you posted.

Btw Someone did the homework to get it Classified.
It will make a great Pure Stocker.

Good Morning Dan.

6" of snow here in Southern Maryland @ 7:45 am. I'm at work in Clinto now.

Mike said that it is not classified Saturday morning, but he would double check when he gets back into the office. He did say that it could run in EFI and would check which class.

Thanks, Tom

Should be good for Pure Stock !
This was a topic of discussion last year.
One racer did the work to get it Classified.
Remember seeing the spec sheet that was approved.
Will ping Mike Baker later today.
Btw got 6-8 inches in Germantown.

Jesse Kershaw was the one that sent Mike Baker the specs on the 3.7 Mustang.
I sent a request to JK to submit them and he jumped right on it. Thanks Jesse
Not sure if the 2011-2014 3.7 Mustang is legal for PS, but I am pretty sure it is for the Fuel Injection classes.

The problem with the later model engines in Pure Stock would be the variable cam timing. How would you check duration and overlap ?

Frank,
Ha !! good observation...For 2016, Its obvious that IHRA doesn't want the hassle of checking these newer V V T cars (camshafts). I have the 2015 IHRA rule book and no where does state 2005 and earlier vehicles...

Alan, the cams check the same way for any other car as for as lift and duration. Overlap is checked with the cams at rest (engine off) and the phasers in the neutral position. Yea , its complicated ......

Dan,
Keep banging the drum for PS, despite the flak from the naysayers... Who would have imagined this . 1st round at Bradenton
yesterday (Sunday) a Pure Stock (H/PS) heads up !!

Carry On,
