1961 corvette stocker info

Does anybody have any info on building a 61 corvette stocker ?
Like possibly the better choice of engine combos for it ? With the 283 2x4 set up or any experience in the 283 fuelie set up ?
Thanks in advance

www.ClassRacerInfo.com It will show you all the specs and do the classification calculations for you so you know what classes and the race weight in each class. Plus, you will see the engine specs, replacement heads and their port volumes, all the accepted parts - pistons, rods, oil pans, blocks, cranks, etc. - listed on one page. You won't have to chase all over the internet to find what you need. There is even a link to flow figures for some of the heads.

The only problem I see with the fuelie combo, beside the cost, you will need the get an approved piston. We built one a few years ago with a copy of what we believed to be the correct piston to see if we could reach our goal of 370 hp. We fell short by 30 and gave up on it.

The fuel injection is going to take a ton of work. There is (it is sidelined right now) a very fast 62 in C/S with a fuel injected 327. So the unit is capable of making the HP to go fast. The guide shows the heads and cams to be similar, or the same, depending upon which HP rating you choose. I would imagine you'd have to really spin the 283 to use the heads, cam, and intake as well as the 327 in the 62 does.

I deal with those cars a lot for restoration purposes. Either induction system could cost $10K to start, just to find all the pieces in good shape, before you pay anyone to make it raceworthy.

Of course, if you're into that sort of thing, the "cool factor" would be priceless. I think the little gold 62 C/S is one of the coolest stockers around.

Thanks for the info Alan
Is there any pictures of the 62 c/stocker around ?
Ya that is why I wanted to do one was the cool factor I think the same love those bodies and as a stocker thought it would be so neat to run one, it almost wouldn't matter how fast I was running it would just look cool

Re: 1961 corvette stocker info

It would be very cool. Btw, the 1961 F.I. set up does not look the same as the 1962. The 1962 unit was a one year deal.

And also possibly Ken Vaughn. You may find Ken at Indie Images, that's the photographer for Beech Bend in Bowling Green. That car was damaged there in a finish line crash 2-3 years ago. Fred still has it as far as I know, not sure what the current status is.

It's a beautiful gold car. It's one of those cars I've wanted to drive in the worst way.

The 283 will likely suffer some from valve shrouding, given the valve size and the bore size.

Yes, you can put a 12 bolt Chevy rear in it.

I'm not sure I'd want to try to run one of the high HP 283 engines with an automatic, even a 3 speed. Those are going to need to run relatively high RPM and in a narrow power band.

Dwight Southerland 10-03-2015 04:54 PM

Re: 1961 corvette stocker info

No fuel injection engine was available in 1961 with an automatic. The 245hp engine is the highest rated engine available with an automatic and it is a 2 x 4bbl engine.

Mark Yacavone 10-03-2015 05:33 PM

Re: 1961 corvette stocker info

The 245 hp is probably okay. Not a very big inch motor for almost 250 hp, but it's got a lot of things going for it.
Many years ago, we bailed on that same car /combo when the new 350 was at 255, but a different story now.

Mark,
If you where to run a Chevy 55-62 combination in stock eliminator, what would it be?

Rory Christianson 10-04-2015 12:01 AM

Re: 1961 corvette stocker info

Think a standard would be fun , don't know how consistent, but would be fun
Hoping might get away with a built 10 bolt to be a little lighter
Thanks for all the input

I don't think an 8-5/8" 10 bolt would like the 4 speed, and I doubt there's enough advantage to be found to make it worth the hassle.

Methinks that if you're "hoping might get away with" anything, then maybe you shouldn't be building a Corvette!

Rory Christianson 10-04-2015 10:53 AM

Re: 1961 corvette stocker info

Me was mainly wanting input if a 10 bolt would handle it because if it would I thought there might be advantage to it being a little lighter

Thanks for the info

Mark Yacavone 10-04-2015 01:02 PM

Re: 1961 corvette stocker info

I don't think the later 8.5 is much lighter, if at all.
More light weight goodies are available for the 12 bolt.
By the time you piece together an 8.5 at the correct width, you won't save much.
Just buy a complete Moser deal and bolt it in.
I'm not the type to just throw money at these cars, but in this case, it makes the most sense.

Ya the more. I Think about it sounds like that makes the most sense

What I am allowed with changes of the steering box ?

Thanks in advance for any help

Re: 1961 corvette stocker info

No matter how low of a class stocker I was building, with a stick,I would not use a rear that pro gears aren't available for.
Also 35 spline and 5/8 wheel studs do it once and be done.
