Annoyance at the Keystones
I didn’t mind sitting in my van in a hayfield in the rain for two days; no one can control the weather. And I didn’t mind that the NHRA chose to lead off on Saturday with the Pro’s; they are the primary reason that the spectators are there. I didn’t even mind waiting until Monday to complete the race. But what really annoys me is paying someone a dollar to hand me a paper towel each time that I go to the bathroom. The first time that I ever saw this was at Englishtown, but it seems to have spread, like the plague, to Atco, Maple Grove, and Cecil County, I believe.
Now, I’ve been to upscale motels where the maitre D hands you a towel, but they were never looking for a tip. And I know that half of the racers today have motor homes and can escape this nuisance. But if NHRA’s true customers are the spectators, then why allow them to be subject to this fleecing? Wouldn’t it be better for the tracks to have their own personnel to take care of the bathrooms, and pay them to do so? If 15,000 people really show up for one of these races, and each pays just a quarter, there’s almost an additional $4000 being coerced from your customers. Maybe I’m just too cheap, but for spending 5 days at Maple Grove, this is what annoyed me the most. And it annoys me every time I see it at other tracks, too. Greg |
Re: Annoyance at the Keystones
Greg, I don't tip them anything; at Maple Grove, E-town, or anywhere else. Just because there is a container for tips, doesn't make it mandatory to put something in it.

Re: Annoyance at the Keystones
I think it's more of a "Northeast" thing rather than NHRA. They do that at the bigger events at Budds Creek, MD as well, an IHRA track.
We are already paying good money to be there to race. But it seems like EVERYBODY is trying to find little "add-ons" to charge, like phone companies, airlines and more. There was a Choice Hotel near Dinwiddie that had a hidden fee for "toiletries" - soap, shampoo, etc. Stuff that's expected to be part of the advertised rates. When I wrote the company, I got a form letter back saying that some hotels are privately owned, they can't control what the charge, blah, blah, blah! |

You hit the nail right on the head. Most tracks facilities are dirty and gross. There is no excuse for the restroom facilities to be run down and dirty. It sure doesn't help to get spectators in the stands. |

Re: Annoyance at the Keystones
That's been going on for a long time and yes it's annoying.
It's a race track, not the Four Seasons. |
Re: Annoyance at the Keystones
One more thing. The bathrooms are disgusting at most tracks in D1. Most of the time you have to deal with port a potties that even worse. It's bad enough that money spent for a points meet doesn't include clean bathrooms. To have disgusting bathrooms at a national event is over the top.

Re: Annoyance at the Keystones
I will usually drop in a tip once a day, not every time I go during the course of the day. I don't mind doing this if they are keeping them clean and tidy. In reality, if it weren't for the fact that there are some real swine among us that don't know how to use a bathroom without making a mess, those attendants probably wouldn't be necessary.
|
Re: Annoyance at the Keystones
They must do very well by these tips. the "toilet gang" was parked near us they drove in a hummer then changed into their red t-shirt uniforms.
Anyway, I also don't think you should have to pay to use a toilet. and I do find it quite like pan-handling.... |
Re: Annoyance at the Keystones
The toilets at Maple Grove look better than the over priced garbage they call food.
|
Re: Annoyance at the Keystones
And who do you think makes a ****house of the ****houses at these tracks??????
Whenever I used them at the races I attended they were almost always clean. Save your complaints for real issues like run schedules, entry fees, bad track prep, etc. etc. etc. |
Re: Annoyance at the Keystones
Ever notice that dirty restrooms have cheap thin toilet paper.
I would pay $1.00 to get rid of the rotten egg smelling water at Gainesville. Ron Ortiz U/SA oooh oooh that smell, can't you smell that smell |

Day 1, Year 2016: 3 guys to clean the bathroom, tip jar present, no paper towels.
|
Re: Annoyance at the Keystones
What the h3ll, if the place is kept clean, I don't mind it so much. I just don't give a handful of change every trip.
If my memory is correct, Maple Grave has never been able to build proper facilities because of environmental restrictions. Same reason it took many years to get a return road down the pit side of the track. |

Re: Annoyance at the Keystones
There must be people older than me who recall tracks not having flush toilets at all.
I still shudder to recall the $#ithouses at Seattle Int'l Raceway in the 80's. The new ones are like a fancy hotel but those old ones seem to have been washed down by a guy with bad aim and explosive diarrhea every morning. |
Re: Annoyance at the Keystones
My first drag strip experience featured concrete toilets and recycled rain gutters cleverly disguised as urinals. Being from Kentucky it sure didn't bother me. I will leave it up to North Carolina to sort out all the bathroom issues....

Re: Annoyance at the Keystones
Seems like a lot of us don't remember what a big deal it was at Englishtown when they put in the modern facilities including showers .
They did have Porters too but the restrooms were spotless . I do remember us fondly calling them the Supinski Super Sh@@@ers in appreciation of the racer who did the plumbing ! |
Re: Annoyance at the Keystones
Who gives a crap. For all these complaints you all should forward them to Jack ****t.
Ron Ortiz |
Re: Annoyance at the Keystones
Tom and Jack you both win, just like at Indy it's nice if you have to use the facilities and they are clean. A small token of our appreciation for a job well done isn't too much to ask.

Re: Annoyance at the Keystones
A clean bathroom comes with your entry at places like Las Vegas and Bristol.
They sit in front of perfectly fine towel dispenser and hand you a towel, coercing you into tipping them. Again, it is an annoyance. |
Re: Annoyance at the Keystones
Quick question do they rope off the crappers on Thursday when the pro are not running or do they wait until Friday when they start asking for tips

Re: Annoyance at the Keystones
Clean bathroom Facilites are a must.
One of the major reasons my wife and other females do not like going to a track. More so if there are smaller kids. Too many are filthy and poorly maintained. It hurts the image of our sport. Especially if you want to broaden the sport. Do not mind the novelty of paying a tip. MIR has the nicest maintain restrooms.. Wish they had showers as I would camp at the track. D |
