Live From 2016 Winternationals

Another season is upon us. Just arrived in stacking line. I'm guessing we're about 45th in line. They haven't got any numbers yet but should have soon. The stacking fellow says he will hand them out appropriately. Already 70 degrees here. Supposed to be in the 80's all week.

Good luck to all the racers there this weekend.

When I lived in So. Calif. throughout the 80's the Winternationals was my favorite event. :)

I'm sure looking forward to being in Pomona, for the 1st time ever! It was this race back in '72, with "Da Grump" (the late great Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins), and his Winternationals winning Pro Stock Vega, that got me hooked into the sport, and soon I will join you there Bob, and I can't wait!!!!

Sounds like great weather for the race. Let's hope everyone has a good time and this season starts out great. Looking forward to several Div.6 cars going many rounds.

Rigs pulling in. A bit of a cluster with the numbers handed out. Seems some racers who came later and got lower numbers. 5 more to go and we're in.

The very first National Dragster I received as an NHRA member was the 1972 Winternationals results issue. I joined as a freshman in high school.

Re: Live From 2016 Winternationals

The best drag race I ever attended was the NHRA 1962 Indy Nationals. I was 23. It was a different world. There was no Christmas Tree, no nitromethane, no alcohol (on, nor off the track,) no handicapped starts, no throttle stops, active nor otherwise, no Funny Cars nor Pro Stockers, no motorcycles, and EVERY RACE WAS A HEADS-UP DRAG RACE.

There were wall-to-wall spectators and 1,200 race cars. No typo...

I see it as the high point of drag racing in the USA. I was fortunate to have been there.

After that, things started going downhill, and haven't stopped, yet. :(

Just my opinion...

Not much to report today. Already 80 degrees. DA is 2351. I'll try to get some pictures to post in a bit.

That is the best statement that has been made on Class Racer in years and I can't agree with you more. Although I'm not always a fan of the way that NHRA treats us, when it quits being fun I'll find a new hobby.

A beautiful morning in Pomona. About an hour or so until the start of the 2016 season. Present conditions are 57.7T 33.8H 29.01BP 1142DA. Should be fast.

Does Robert Pond have his new red '66 Fairlane SS/BA car there? I saw the stocker in the photos.

Round 2 qualifying almost in the books. Looks to be about 4 slower than Q1. 78.9T 13.9H 29.02BP 2517DA

I see that 5 cars got tossed in the 1st Super Stock qualifying run...

Was it fuel, scales or???????????????????

Thanx,
Bob

Bob Gullett 02-11-2016 04:24 PM

Re: Live From 2016 Winternationals

I'm guessing fuel.

Re: Live From 2016 Winternationals

Qualifying in the books. 2 casualties. Tina Summerton lost an engine and Markus Svensson in Toby's old car lost a trans. Most people slowed a tenth from the first qualifying session to the last. Time to barbeque some steaks and enjoy a couple of wobbly pops!

Re: Live From 2016 Winternationals

Its just a guess that it was fuel. I'm not sure on any particulars as to the issue with it.

It was scales....I talked to Mike O'Keefe last night before leaving, he tries to stay 15-20 lbs heavy. Art Peterson also was heavy the first day, light yesterday morning.
