AHFS changes after Phoenix and Houston
I see that BJ & Mike Graham and Alex Kadar/Mark Yacavone took a pretty good hit after Phoenix.
Horsepower adjustments following the CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals in Phoenix, AZ and NHRA LODRS event in Houston, TX As the result of runs under the Automatic Horsepower Factoring System (AHFS) 1.20-second under policy at the Carquest Auto Parts, and LORDS event, the following changes have been made. The horsepower rating for 1975 Ford Maverick, entries with the 302 cubic inch engine and a factory rating of 129 currently rated at 139, has been increased by thirteen horsepower, to 152 horsepower; for Stock Eliminator. The horsepower rating for 00-05 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, entries with the 207 cubic inch engine and a factory rating of 170 currently rated at 174, has been increased by six horsepower, to 180 horsepower; for Stock Eliminator. The horsepower rating for 2014 Ford Cobra Jet, entries with the 429 cubic inch engine and a factory rating of 455 currently rated at 455, has been increased by twenty nine horsepower, to 484 horsepower; for Stock Eliminator. NHRA's 2016 Automatic Horsepower Factoring System outlines that any run of 1.20-seconds or more under the index will receive an immediate index decrease or horsepower increase. These changes are effective March 1, 2016. |
Re: AHFS changes after Phoenix and Houston
The ahfs does work if you let it! Anyone got a good deal on lead?

Re: AHFS changes after Phoenix and Houston
Congratulations Mike & BJ. I really appreciate your disregard for the AHFS and showing others how to let it all out as this is a performance based category. Most racers out there protect their little treasured HP ratings, but you have showed the way as a true competitor. Others should try to emulate you and brave through the factoring system. Let your race car show what it is all about. Thank you I commend you both.
As a side note, is it possible for you to go another 1.20 under so you can go play in T/SA. I believe that T/SA is a natural FFFord class. It would be great to see you and Summers battle it out. Thanks Ron Ortiz U/SA watching out for T |

Re: AHFS changes after Phoenix and Houston
Thanks! I have a Bass Pro Shop right around the corner from me. It would not have occurred to me to check them.
I'll try to keep that in mind in case it turns out I don't have enough ballast in the driver's seat... |
Re: AHFS changes after Phoenix and Houston
While you guys are buying ballast from Bass Pro Shops, check out the moss on some of their displays. We supply all the BPS. If you could please send me a picture so I can see what they are doing with it. There are no BPS within 50 miles of me. Thanks

Re: AHFS changes after Phoenix and Houston
I bought the bag of shot from Cabelas and after awhile the bag torn and the shot started rolling all over the place. Also had a car hit the wall at Speedworld years ago and the shot was all over the track. It was hell to clean up.

Re: AHFS changes after Phoenix and Houston
I hope you guys are putting those bags of shot in weight boxes and not just in the spare tire area or under the seat! I've seen racers thown out for it.

Re: AHFS changes after Phoenix and Houston
I was working the track when the racers car crashed and I did the clean up. Come to find out the shot was in lower rear quarter panel pocket in trunk area. Wasn't seen in tech or added after tech. It was a super street car using ballast for ET reduction on 10.90 index
|
Re: AHFS changes after Phoenix and Houston
I have seen a car "leaking" lead shot from the rear quarter area before! Mr Ed I needed a couple hundred pounds so I figured I better get the 50# bars!
|
Re: AHFS changes after Phoenix and Houston
If your not putting it in the weight box, but building weight bars, it is easier to pour shot in the tubing than to melt lead bars in. Plumbing supply stores have lead bars, and round one lb. "pucks". I use square, or rectangular tubing for weight bars. I Tig weld plates on the ends. Weld one on, pour in the shot, weld the cap on the other end.
|
Re: AHFS changes after Phoenix and Houston
I have 2 weight bars made of square tubing with removable ends that I can slide the rectangular weights in. Combined I can carry 300# and an additional 100# in the weight box. If I get somewhere and decide to change classes all I have to do is take the end off and slide the weight out or add some. Oh yeah the square tubing weighs 50# a piece so all together that 500# of ballast I can add.

Seeing this thread refuses to die,...beat this:
Two pieces of railroad track @ 180# ea., 100 with the box. 100 in the back bumper.. and that's for the lighter class. |

Not sure I want to put that much more load on the transaxle though. The Monte is already a tank @ 3500# Just going to run "C" this weekend , until we reassess the situation. |
Re: AHFS changes after Phoenix and Houston
Mark, have you thought about a weight bar up front? Helps with wheel stands. May not be a problem for your car. Might be easier on the trans axle?
I have a 65 lb bar (square tubing filled with lead shot) up front, right behind my fog lights. Two 1/2" bolts to the front bumper support bar. Rest is in the weight box in the back. Duct tape stopped shot bags leaking shot into the weight box. Got tired of having to use the shop vac to get loose shot out. A cut down floor mat keeps the bags from wearing against the heads of the 2 bolts holding the weight box in place. |
Re: AHFS changes after Phoenix and Houston
I don't think that the problem is the location of the weight, just the amount of weight.......
Bob PS: The only way that car would do a wheel stand is to leave the line in reverse.......... |

Very hard to steer now with a gutted power rack. To be clear, the picture is of my Omega with a 350 Buick,...about 10 years ago. And yes, it still spun the tires once in a while. |
Re: AHFS changes after Phoenix and Houston
Mark, where did that car go (Omega w/Buick)?

lots of weight in trunk makes for big wheelies. I had fun driving this car.
