Re: R.I.P. Mark Lyle
This is a shock. I didn't know Mark personally but had seen him in action many times. Big loss, not only to NHRA, but to all his friends here in Division 6. Thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.

Re: R.I.P. Mark Lyle
hi, this is a shock. I've known mark since he started at pacific as the starter. he was a fair man, and good starter. I spent more than a few times helping him and his crew scrap starting line at div 6 races over the years. he always wanted stick cars to go last, so wouldn't tear up his newly prepped starting line, lol we lost a great man. condolences to his family.

Re: R.I.P. Mark Lyle
Another good friend and good guy lost too soon. I've known Mark for over 20+ years, back when he was manager of our local NAPA store down the street from the college providing parts for our college auto programs. Always modest and caring..he took a lot of pride in prepping the track and providing the best racing surface for us racers. He always mentioned he had the best seat in the house and getting the NHRA starter job was his dream job. I will miss his friendly point and smile as I came to the line, wherever I raced. Mark was one in a million.
You will be missed my friend............. |

Re: R.I.P. Mark Lyle
From what I read on a brief news snippet on Bob Blackwell's FB page was that Mark was attempting to save a friend while swimming and drowned. I share my sincere condolences with everyone. I have met him when my kids made Jr dragster exhibition runs at a National a few years ago, and he fist pumped each one before their run. A sincere gentleman in my opinion.
I am also in tears that he is gone. A very good man doing what he loved so that we could do what we love. |
Re: R.I.P. Mark Lyle
Very Sad thing to hear on Monday while at work. I personally never met the guy but, I know Bob & Penny Bender were very close to him when the National events would come around this area and they always told me how cool of a guy he was and was always doing everything and anything to help out friends, racers, etc. So when the news broke that he died trying to help a fellow friend it wasn't a surprise. I followed him on FB and to be honest the man was living the dream. He got to play with friend for 24 weekends out of the year and got to see some fast & neat racecars. When he wasn't racing he was on vacation with his wife and would travel all over the place to relax and the one thing that made him cool was that he let you into his life, showing you pictures of his vacation spots, going out to dinner after a long day at the track with co-workers or him just chilling by the firepit in his backyard. He will definitely be missed by everyone and just hope that whoever fills the spot can bring the amount of fun that Mark had at the track with racers.

Re: R.I.P. Mark Lyle
I briefly served with Mark on Tech team and thought the world of him. I rated him as Starter equal to Buster Couch. He always had a smile, nod, or wave every time I came to the line. Only the good die young. He will be sorrily missed.

Yes, we know him well and he was a great guy and a fun guy. Still in shock over this. He really did love the sportsmen racers. He reminded me a little like Buster back in the day. All he wanted was to have everyone, have a fun and safe race. |
Re: R.I.P. Mark Lyle
My heart felt very sad when I heard the news early Monday morning. Even though Mark was in a very important position in our sport, he always found time to make the drivers feel comfortable on his starting line. On that starting line 2 years ago at Indy the track was down for a while, drivers sitting in their cars backed up to the water box. I watched Mark bring each driver a bottle of water. He always found time to talk to the racers, any time they approached him. He made approaching him easy. That is a good feeling considering he was the last man I saw every time I went down the track.
My condolences to his family and friends. Jim D'Amore |
