Oil capacity.......what do you run?

Wet sumps.
How much oil do you guys carry in the sump?
I have a Gen 1 style SBC and carry 6-6.5 quarts plus filter.
Moroso pan.

7 quart pan on my 522, 6 quart pan on my 598, both filled with Mobil 1 synthetic 10W-30 .

So , I'll assume 7 quarts in the 522 and 6 quarts in the 598........:D

Re: Oil capacity.......what do you run?

yes, including filter :p which on the 522 is a K&P http://kandpengineering.com/ that doesn't hold much and a Wix Racing filter on the 598 that holds about 1/2 quart but soon to be replaced with a K&P also.

I have run 5 quarts plus filter in the past in the 355 ( 7 quart pans ) .
BUT as you know , I've had oil starvation issues and as a part of my "shotgun" approach , I was thinking of adding oil.
As of now the 355 has 6 quarts total ( includes filter ).............I'll probably add another quart.

Re: Oil capacity.......what do you run?

Your oil starvation issues are not due to running up to 1 1/2 quarts shy.

No.........Agreed .........I doubt that myself.
I'm sure I have that figured out now BUT , I was just curious as to what levels are common.......

SBC -- 6.5 qts total in my B&B 7 qt pan with a 51061R filter.

Joe,

I am running 6 qts of the 30w Lightning Racing Oil in my 350. I have a Moroso Billet oil pump and an 8 qt pan. I also run a System One filter. I have run as much as 7 qts and as low as 5 qts with no issue. If you are bracket racing I would run 7 qts.

I run almost four quarts with a wix filter and seven quart pan.

I expected a reply like this eventually..........:D
I would say that's "pushing things " a little........but you were kinda' vague........
What engine?

Joe, there are numerous stock/super stock racers that are willing to wound their engine to win class and a worthless wally.;)

Yeah , I know............I think I'd look for power somewhere else  LOL
Ask me how I know.......

Yeah, 350/255 or 300 stocker. 10 national records, 4 wallys, several wins. One engine in 13 years, think I will stick with almost four.

Can you use an accumulator in stock?
7000 RPM
Cause thats the only way I'd attempt that.

Re: Oil capacity.......what do you run?

We run the milodon stock pan. Have 5 qts total including filter without problems. Back in the old days when you had to run a stock 4qt pan we ran it a qt low (3 plus filter) for years back in the 80's. Never had any problems but we ran a stock low volume pump. Just my thoughts. sbc by the way.

I think you are right, but I'd bet you don't run a high volume, high pressure pump. That's what gets people in trouble.

I'm still waiting for a reaction to my comment.......
Anyway........to your point , that definitely helped get me in trouble.....

Hi,

I guess nobody wants to tackle the problem of TOO MUCH oil in an incorrectly baffled pan??????????????????

Without the oil controlled it can climb the rear of the oil pan into the spinning crankshaft and foamed (aerated) oil doesn't lubricate.....

Bob

That's right............and at best , all you're going to do is "guesstimate".
Is this baffle effective , how much oil is........ just right?

Yep. Been fascinated by this subject for a while. Would love to be able to "see" inside the pan at rpm. Reher and Morrison ran an engine without a pan on the dyno once and I think they filmed it. Big mess, but great info I'm sure. Would love to see that footage. I think the grump also did this. I do know the grump had a two foot deep pan on his dyno...

looks like the inside of a dishwasher oil going everywhere with out baffling or windage trays---3 to 3 1//2 quarts in a comp eliminator car--- engine only runs maybe 30-45 seconds at most anyway----FED 387

It got me in trouble. Once. It was fine while running the 1/8th with 5 quarts, but that long 10,000 rpm plus the last 1/8th killed it.

Re: Oil capacity.......what do you run?

I install the dipstick and tube before installing the pan. This lets you ck the actual oil level and where you want full to be, that's if you use a dipstick. Then before installing the pan fill it with water to see how many qts. gets you where you want it. My 7qt. brand name pan would have oil up pretty high if I used 7 qts.

RobbieRacer 06-30-2016 11:57 AM

Re: Oil capacity.......what do you run?

On my bracket car I put 5 quarts in the 7 quart pan then trimmed the dip stick tube till the stick read full. That way I knew how much was in there.
