I Already Have Pit Vehicle Insurance!

If I already have insurance on my pit vehicle, please explain why I have to be charged for NHRA's insurance? Jim

It's easier for them to put insurance on everybody's pit vehicle then it is to ask everybody for proof of insurance .

Does NHRA charge you if you don't have a pit vehicle?
Do they consider a Handicap scooter a pit vehicle?

Do you have liability? (Just curious)

All I saw was the reduction notice. Does this streamline to the vehicle having insurance no matter who is operating it vs the driver/rider having insurance and at the specific minimum dollar amount?

Does that mean Billy Nees will have to insure his bicycle?

Years ago when they came up the idea for pit vehicle insurance, all you needed was to add the vehicle with a rider to your Home Owners Insurance...

I think it cost $15.00 to add the golf cart....

Just sayin'

I had it added to my RV insurance. Full coverage. However, what really needs to be addressed is underage drivers. No insurance covers your kid who has no license and is not of legal driving age! That is what NHRA should be cracking down on! I'm sure NHRA's "insurance " does not cover them either. Has anyone even seen the policy they are being charged for? Legally, you must be shown the policy. Jim

Re: I Already Have Pit Vehicle Insurance!

I added a separate policy for my golf cart and it was under 50 dollars a year and that includes full coverage, theft etc. it was a new cart in 2015. I think liability was about 25 a year. The NHRA stuff was liability only at NHRA events.

I think it is funny how they advertise a rate drop that happened only because they screwed everyone with a huge increase first. LOL.

I agree about the kids. There are some that do very well on carts, bikes, etc, but they really should draw the line on allowing them to drive in the pits. I haven't seen the fine print, but I would be shocked if they were covered.

Good luck with that! 10pm July 3rd I was driving down a one way street and had two scooters cut across the lane then pass me going the wrong way with no lights on. Someone must have almost hit them as at the next intersection there were two cars parked in the middle of it with folks standing and pointing after them.

I don't blame them on this one. I'm in construction and a lot of the larger projects, hospitals, airports etc. have what's called a OCIP (Owner Controlled Insurance Program) basically the owner covers every contractor with the proper coverage under their insurance umbrella. They don't have to worry about a lack of coverage or risky underwriters. In todays sue happy society and large jury awards it probably saves them in the long run.
If you want ask your carrier for the OCIP discount while your pit vehicle is at a NHRA event. We get credit back in the construction trade (but the owner wants that credit deducted from our contract)
The carrier will probably tell you the pit vehicle premium is too low to qualify for a deduction.

Re: I Already Have Pit Vehicle Insurance!

Remember this, NHRA did not have to tell us about a rate reduction. It could've stayed the same. How would we know? I agree with the under age driver issue. It needs to stop. The pits can be a confusing place to navigate. Race cars and pit vehicles all driving on different sides of the lanes (or no lanes). Also, the riding of your kids/grand kids on your lap in your dragster while warming the car or going to the staging lanes is not a safe situation.

Guess I'll have to buy something. Are my gym shoes insured?

What's the latest on using an ordinary bicycle in the pits as far as an insurance requirement? Is it mandatory to buy NHRA's coverage?

Kid's are not allowed to operate pit vehicles per NHRA rules, I know because my kids would hound me like crazy. They (NHRA) are at some times lax about it, but I can assure you parents get notified of it. The rule however is in place because of adults and it was an incident at Gainesville.

At just about every race I see kids joy riding in golf carts. Whoever is supposed to be policing that isn't doing a very good job.

Absolutely correct, but they can't ride skateboards or bicycles or golf carts, and they aren't going to sit on their hands all weekend so the parents need to make sure they're at least being very careful. Unfortunately the parents that are drunk and disorderly most likely aren't policing their children.

Your insurance protects you. Their insurance protects them.

Membership fees? Entry fees? Crew fees? Licensing fees? Certification fees? You would think between these 5 charges they’d have enough to get some insurance? Why do the racers have to pay for this on top of all the other fees we pay? NHRA national events are the only places I’ve raced at that charge you for this.

We are just a single team, but short of US Nationals (and only going to this because it’s 8 miles from our shop) it’s driven us away from attending national events.

I guess I can’t blame them if racers just keep coming and keep paying.

NHRA drove me away years ago. Apparently, the addiction is strong enough to keep car counts up. I agree, you can't blame NHRA if cars keep coming through the gates.
