Torque Converter who do you use
I'm pretty much inbetween Coan, ATI, and Ultimate open to suggestions of other companies. i'm sure i won't any have isssue with any of those 3 companies just wanted some advice from guys who test alot of converters and if it makes a difference this is going in 3000lb 550hp bracket car that will see both footbrake and transbrake racing i know that means the converter probably won't be perfect for either. but who would you use and the trans is a turbo 400.
Thanks Patrick |
Re: Torque Converter who do you use
I have been using ATI for several decades. They have great service and a fantastic product. Call and talk to Charlie Plott. You might have to leave him a message and he will get back to you. You would be much better off with a glide than the 400 in a bracket car

Re: Torque Converter who do you use
Mike i appreciate the input. Ive considered a glide but i have a 400 and i wasnt sure how well a 2 speed would work in a lower horsepower combo like this. But also the extreme weight reduction from a all steel 400 to a glide might make up some for the lack of a gear.?

Re: Torque Converter who do you use
X2 on ATI. I've been a customer for over 25 years and have always been happy with their quality, service and knowledge. A-1 is superb as well.

Re: Torque Converter who do you use
Lenny
At Ultimate has been very good to us Ultimate Convertor Concepts He has a banner add at the top... |
Re: Torque Converter who do you use
Lenny at Ultimite converters is about as hard a working guy in the converter buisness as your gonna get and has a great working relationship with his customers .

Re: Torque Converter who do you use
So ati or ultimate it is i'll flip a coin.

Re: Torque Converter who do you use
None better than ATI. That said, I've been running a Turbo 400 for 25 years in my bracket cars, running as slow as 15s to as quick as mid 8s.

Re: Torque Converter who do you use
Most of the guys out there that do S/SS stuff, provide a good product.
But seeing you're here on Class Racer, asking this question, I would suggest starting at the top of this page. |
Re: Torque Converter who do you use
Lenny at Ultimate did mine and it works perfect and he is great to deal with.

Re: Torque Converter who do you use
We have been customers of Turbo Action since 1977. I highly suggest considering them also.

Re: Torque Converter who do you use
I use Lenny/Ultimate converters. Great to work with and knows his stuff. Was a racer and is always available.

Re: Torque Converter who do you use
* You can't go wrong with Lenny, very easy to work with & knows his stuff..
Also, backs his work 100% & can Fix anything !!! Listen to the Racer's ??? |
Re: Torque Converter who do you use
There is a ATI in the Amx, Amc / Chrysler transmission. Trans now has 250 runs on it. There was a problem at 45 runs, trans and converter came out. Trans was fine, ATI found nothing with the converter, reassembled and everything has worked flawless since. I have also used Dynamic in other applications with good results

Re: Torque Converter who do you use
ATI since 2010 in my bracket glide. Zero issues, several track series championships.
I sourced mine through Rinehart Performance and saved a bit vs going direct... You still get the same 1-time free re-stall if want a change, etc... Clark |
Re: Torque Converter who do you use
All great companies mentioned here. The key is finding the right fit to work with you on your program and what works best for your combo and collected data , as each combo is different. Listening to the racer is very important, as there is no substitute for seat of the pants! Again, you can not go wrong with any of the mentioned companies.

Re: Torque Converter who do you use
wow i definitly appreciate the info and all the response. i will say i don't have a dyno sheet on this motor, and it will probably not be dynoed until its in the car. my curiosity is would a rear wheel dyno sheet help a converter company spec a converter? i have a couple converters that aren't right for the combo but they could be used for a couple dyno pulls if the info would help the converter company get closer.

Re: Torque Converter who do you use
I have never used a Chassis dyno but all my engines are put on a engine dyno before I get them. Lenny/Ultimate worked with me on the dyno sheets and came up with the right converter, stall and shift points the first time out based on my engine dyno sheets. Don't know if you can get peak HP and torque on a chassis dyno to figure out stall???? Some one may have experience with that?
Keep doing your homework, tons of great information available here on CR. Engine and chassis dyno's are tool, you have to go down the track to improve and be consistent. Good luck. |
Re: Torque Converter who do you use
I've been looking around to get some feedback from anyone who has tried the Coan billet bolt-together converters in Stock... Anyone on this board tried one yet? Overall we've been very happy with the performance and consistency of the ATI 8" converters as well, just always looking for feedback on new stuff on the market.

Another vote for ATI. Earned a Division championship and a Division Runner up with their products

ATI Performance Products is the only convertor we have ever used.
We never had a reason to try anything else |
