Gear recommendation
I have a 69 nova weighing 3100lbs with a 572 crate engine using a TH400 with a Dana 60 and a 4.10 gear. I have a 2 speed PG with a 1.80 gear set I want to try in the car. I was thinking of using a 4.56 gear but was wondering if anyone could give me any recommendations for a gear ratio when switching from a 3 speed to a 2 speed? Thanks

Re: Gear recommendation
Which Stock or Super Stock class does that run? Might not find anybody here running anything like that. Ya think?

Re: Gear recommendation
I don't run a stock or super stock class. I just figured I would ask the question here thinking that lots of super stock guys may have tried changing from 3 speeds to 2 speeds or vice versa. Talking to some racers the most common answer I have heard is to go up a couple of gears ratios when changing to a 2 speed.

Re: Gear recommendation
Maybe you should try posting this question on the correct form, such as Bracket, Top Stock or .90's tech section and take ProStock with you......................

Re: Gear recommendation
With all that torque and a big tire I would think a 4:56 would work . I'm sure you don't want to wind her up to high in the traps.

Re: Gear recommendation
I have heard for years that you go up a ratio or two like you posted. Never understood why, since if you have the optimum rear ratio for your combo, you would now be revved too high with the lower ratio.
In my super stock car, I switched from a 2.52 low gear T350 to a 1.96 powerglide. Neither trans had all the whistles and bells, but were decent pieces. I ran virtually the same. Going from a T400 to PG, I would've be surprised if you ran quicker just based on the efficiency of the 2 transmissions. |
Re: Gear recommendation
Maybe it would be worth trying it with the current gear before changing anything. The motor does have lots of torque so maybe with the more efficient 2 speed it might make up any loss of the 1st gear ratio change and not affect trap rpm. One of the other members also mentioned that might be good to start with the current gear and make my own data based on the outcome. Thanks
