IHRA and Summit Racing Equipment Continue their Long-Standing Partnership
Announce the new Summit National Championship in 2017 WEST PALM BEACH, Florida (November 30, 2016) - The International Hot Rod Association™ (IHRA) is pleased to announce that Summit Racing Equipment will continue their long-standing relationship with the IHRA by renewing their commitment to IHRA's sportsman racers through class racing and bracket racing programs. The renewal of the partnership with Summit Racing Equipment also includes some updates to the existing sportsman programs. The Summit Pro-Am Tour will be replaced and move from a divisional based system to a national based points system in 2017. The change in structure will eliminate "divisions" and return to utilizing a national points based system that will improve a competitor's ability to pick and choose the races he or she wants to attend without having geographical constraints. Additionally, the Summit SuperSeries will feature an increased and expanded Summit World Finals purse. "The sportsman racer, at every level, has been and will continue to be one of the most important components of the Summit Racing Equipment family," said Summit Motorsports and Events Manager Jim Greenleaf. "We are proud to support the men, women and kids who gather at their local IHRA track to participate in the Summit SuperSeries or travel throughout their region chasing a class racing championship. It is a great feeling for us to see Summit SuperSeries champions from all over North America show up at Memphis for the Summit World Finals to race for a World Championship. It takes the entire family of IHRA racers, member tracks, sanctioning body staff and Summit Racing Equipment working together to move the sportsman racing component of IHRA Drag Racing to the incredible level of support and enthusiasm we have today and we are proud to continue our efforts in these programs," Greenleaf continued. The new national class racing program will be called the Summit Sportsman National Championship and it will feature the same line-up of classes including: Top Dragster, Top Sportsman, Super Stock, Stock, Quick Rod, Super Rod, Hot Rod and a class for Juniors. The Summit Sportsman National Championship will kick off in Immokalee, Florida (Immokalee Regional Raceway) in early February and conclude in West Salem, Ohio (Dragway 42) in late September. Complete details and dates for the new Summit Sportsman National Championship will be released soon. In addition, the Summit Sportsman National Championship will boast a championship point fund that pays more than anything currently in the marketplace with $15,000 to win the national championship, $5,000 for second and $3,000 for third place in each of the seven primary classes. The Junior champion will win $2,000, $1,500 for second place and $1,000 for the third place finisher in the national points chase. The event purses have also been improved to ensure the IHRA is extremely competitive in the market while still having an entry fee that is less than any other event of its type. IHRA was the first organization to live stream the entire series of class racing events and in 2017 will build upon that platform by announcing a new media partnership with a major network provider. The new partnership will provide unprecedented live stream coverage of each Summit Sportsman National Championship event in its entirety with an industry leading provider of sports content. This partnership will be announced shortly and will further demonstrate IHRA's dominate role in providing national exposure to sportsman competitors. "Summit Racing Equipment is a mainstay of the IHRA family and we're excited to have them back and continue to support our sportsman racing programs," said IHRA Vice President Skooter Peaco. "Our sportsman racers are the backbone of our company and Summit helps us to grow those programs every year. In fact, we just finished our 15th season of the Summit SuperSeries and we are very proud of the fact that we have been able to grow that program into the largest of its kind in the sport. The IHRA just hosted the largest gathering of track champions in the history of drag racing during the Summit World Finals as 95% of all IHRA Summit SuperSeries tracks had their champions represented at Memphis International Raceway for the Summit SuperSeries World Championship. It was incredible to see almost every champion from every track we have racing against each other. It definitely reinforced the fact that the Summit SuperSeries is on target with our member tracks and our bracket racing members." Summit Racing Equipment is the world's largest mail order automotive performance equipment company with thousands of performance parts, aftermarket accessories, tools and garage equipment and stock replacement parts. For over 40 years, Summit Racing Equipment has set and reset the standard for fast shipping, customer service, and tech expertise in auto parts in order to become a performance powerhouse around the globe. Re: Ihra 2017
I'm just glad IHRA will have a program for the sportsman next year. At the IHRA "National" events I attended this past year, I was disappointed in the fact that their new president had absolutely no interest in the sportsman cars or racers in attendance.

Re: Ihra 2017
I guess we can cross off Dragway 42 as one of the possible tracks for the D3 "TBD" LODRS in August.
|
Re: Ihra 2017
So far, so good! :)
I can't wait to see the schedules, entry fees, payouts and claim requirements. |
Re: Ihra 2017
$15k to win the championship? I'd say that's a pretty good bump! Congrats to IHRA and Summit for keeping sportsman racing alive and well.
|
Re: Ihra 2017
It is nice to see Summit is staying on board. The re-built Dragway 42 looks like it will finally come a reality. I'm excited to see the schedule too.
|
Re: Ihra 2017
Exciting times for IHRA. I have been pushing a purse increase by increasing the entry fee roughly the same amount. I'm not sure it will happen, but I think it's a possibility. This would contradict NHRA which simply raises entries while payouts remain the same or decline.

Re: Ihra 2017
"Assume" the schedule will be released at PRI....going to be very interesting to see. So far this is so much better than all the rumors that have been floating about. Really glad Summit has stepped up...may end my "boycott" since they dropped DRC as a major sponsor. Any yea, I know Summit has done a lot for Sportsman racers, just didn't like how it went down when they could have continued for the same money as a few sets of valve springs for KB racing.

Re: Ihra 2017
I think that's great news!
|
Re: Ihra 2017
This is great news. Now lets see a schedule. I'm hoping it's not like years past when they've scheduled their races the same dates as close NHRA races.

Re: Ihra 2017
Hopefully their announcement today will include the schedule. Contingency list would be great but recognize they probably still have to get people lined up The Summit deal and a National Championship series should help get manufacturers to sign up. All races being doubles will likely help car counts as well. Sounds very encouraging to this point.

Re: Ihra 2017
This sounds like a very good start in the right direction, reasonlabe entry and payouts and whoever wins the championship will def be well paid. Now hopefully they can put a schedule together with several races and not just way up north or way down south. Many people have said it over and over, if IHRA would listen to the complaints of the sportsman racers and def those who run NHRA and get back to a good sportsman format the sky's the limit. Great job IHRA and Summit for what will hopefully be the beginning of a great set up!

The International Hot Rod Association (IHRA), the world’s second-largest drag racing sanctioning body, is gearing up for 2017 with two National sportsman programs highlighting the season. The bracket racing based Summit SuperSeries will make its return to IHRA-sanctioned member tracks for the 16th season and the newly formed Summit Sportsman National Championship, which takes the place of the Summit Pro-Am Tour regional format, will make its debut for class racing competitors. The points funds for both sportsman programs will be greater than and pay more places than any other class racing series in existence. The 2017 edition of the IHRA $200,000 Summit SuperSeries will be contested at nearly 100 IHRA member tracks. The program will feature the same format and structure as what was introduced in 2016 but with an increased and expanded national championship purse. IHRA Summit SuperSeries participating tracks will crown a Summit SuperSeries track champion and those champions are invited to compete in the Summit World Finals in Memphis, Tennessee at the end of the season. The increased points fund is as follows: the championship prize package in Top and Mod is $20,000 to win and $7,000 to the runner-up, sixth round $2,000, fifth round $1,000, fourth round $700, third round $600, second round $400 and first round $300. The Junior Dragster championship payout is a brand new turn-key JR Race Car junior dragster plus $3,000 to win, $2,000 runner-up, sixth round $1,000, fifth round $800, fourth round $500, third round $400, second round $400 and first round $100. The complete set of program guidelines and rules for the Summit SuperSeries can be found at - http://www.ihra.com/superseries-home “Summit Racing Equipment is dedicated to supporting competitors at all levels and through a variety of different platforms” said Motorsports and Events Manager Jim Greenleaf.** “It takes the entire family of IHRA racers, member tracks, sanctioning body staff and Summit Racing Equipment working together to move the sportsman racing component of IHRA Drag Racing to the incredible level of support and enthusiasm we have today. We are thrilled to have just completed the 15th season of the Summit SuperSeries and we are looking forward to seeing how the new format of the Summit Sportsman National Championship is received by the class racers,” Greenleaf continued. The Summit Sportsman National Championship will launch in 2017 and aims to move IHRA class racing away from a regional structure and focus on a national structure. The Summit Sportsman National Championship is designed to provide a more enjoyable and competitive program through an industry leading points fund, flexibility of schedule and claims structure. The new National Championship for class racers will be determined using points claims from the best seven of the first ten events the racer attends. Competitors will be scored against each other using a national points system and may race at whatever event they choose without having limitations based upon regional boundaries. The industry leading Summit Sportsman National Championship points fund will be greater than and pay more places than any other class racing series in existence. The Top Sportsman, Top Dragster, Super Stock, Stock, Quick Rod, Super Rod & Hot Rod National Champion will be awarded $15,000, runner-up $5,000 and third-place $3,000. Junior Dragster will be comprised of one class with a $2,000 grand prize to the Champion, $1,500 runner-up and third-place $1,000. The IHRA was the first organization to live stream the entire series of class racing events and in 2017 will build upon that platform by announcing a new media partnership with a major network provider.** The new partnership will provide unprecedented live stream coverage of each Summit Sportsman National Championship event in its entirety with an industry leading provider of sports content. The IHRA is owned and operated by IRG Sports + Entertainment™, a TPG Specialty Lending company, and promotes professional and sportsman racing for drivers of all levels. Re: Ihra 2017
So if my calendar is correct, Dragway 42 is a wed. to fri race? Lol
No proof reader is my guess. Nice Championship purse, wonder how the contingencies will look. |
Re: Ihra 2017
Maybe if this new format can get some traction in 2017, a few more tracks may jump in or jump back in the following year.
Dragway 42 could go a long way into getting some of the Ohio folks back into the IHRA mix. |
Re: Ihra 2017
Yea it would def be nice to get some tracks in the KY, TN, IN and OH on the band wagon for mine and a lot of others sake lol plus their are tons of good tracks in those regions

US 131 Motorsports Park announced its 2017 schedule with the IHRA event described as follows:
June 10-11: Import vs. Domestic, plus Summit Sportsman National Championship http://www.mlive.com/autoracing/inde...rt_river_index Is the IHRA event double booked with the Import vs. Domestic race too???? |
Re: Ihra 2017
Yes, they are racing together that weekend. The Imports vs Domestic is basically a bracket race. It doesn't make sense to me. I wish Martin would have gone NHRA.
