2017 SS/GT Indexes
New GT indexes are now posted on nhraracer.com. However it only goes down to GT/MA class with a 11.20 index. New lower 4-classes are not posted yet nor their indexes. Maybe it's a work in progress? Who knows these days.

|
Re: 2017 SS/GT Indexes
X2, Did I read that right?? .5 off all of them??
|
Re: 2017 SS/GT Indexes
This is totally idiotic.
I'd like to think someone made an error in math, however it is NHRA we're dealing with. FJ |
Re: 2017 SS/GT Indexes
No, if this is true its just plain stupid!!
|
Re: 2017 SS/GT Indexes
they changed the weight brakes
what was A is now E as I read it |
Re: 2017 SS/GT Indexes
Yes.
I see that now too. The FGT indexes are still incorrect though. (or awfully soft) FJ |
Re: 2017 SS/GT Indexes
So if I was a natural gt/ha car I am now a gt/la natural? I guess I don't understand. When did they change the weight break? Thanks

Re: 2017 SS/GT Indexes
Didn't have time to format so that rows aren't compressed but this is copied from the latest rulebook...
(based on pounds per NHRA-factored horsepower) FGT/A: 6.00 to 6.49 FGT/L: 11.50 to 11.99 FGT/B: 6.50 to 6.99 FGT/M: 12.00 to 12.49 FGT/C: 7.00 to 7.49 FGT/N: 12.50 or more I: 10:00 to 10:49 J: 10:50 to 10.99 K: 11.00 to 11.49 L: 11.50 to 11.99 M: 12.00 to 12.49 N: 12.50 to 12.99 O: 13.00 to 13.49 P: 13.50 to 13.99 FGT/D: 7.50 to 7.99 A: FGT/E: 8.00 to 8.49 B: FGT/F: 8.50 to 8.99 C: FGT/G: 9.00 to 9.49 D: FGT/H: 9.50 to 9.99 E: FGT/I: 10.00 to 10.49 F: FGT/J: 10.50 to 10.99 G: FGT/K: 11.00 to 11.49 H: 6.00 to 6.49 6.50 to 6.99 7.00 to 7.49 7.50 to 7.99 8.00 to 8.49 8.50 to 8.99 9:00 to 9:49 9:50 to 9.99 |
Re: 2017 SS/GT Indexes
Thanks

Re: 2017 SS/GT Indexes
Now everyone with a GT car gets to buy new class designations. Gee, thanks...
|
Re: 2017 SS/GT Indexes
Are these new classes just for the new high hp engines say 2010-2017 or can you use a old high hp engine say a 427 ford high riser in a fox body or a 454 in some small chevy body?

Re: 2017 SS/GT Indexes
As of today on the NHRA site:
The 4 new GT classes are listed...N,O,P, and Q http://i64.tinypic.com/2nkqbb.jpg http://i64.tinypic.com/o5p6d4.jpg |

Re: 2017 SS/GT Indexes
If you use an 08 or later motor (copo, scj, or dp) you run fgt. If it's an old motor say a big 69 396 or something, then its gt.

Re: 2017 SS/GT Indexes
Many new classes which were requested 20years ago. Namely 6.0,6.5,7,7.5.
. Only problem is the separation into smaller and smaller numbers per class in the country. Makes it less and less likely for heads up runs at points meets or Open events. Limits the class sizes at Nationals too. Not sure when class will be eliminated at Nationals to save time. Fully Qualified field wouldn't change much for some but a few died in the wool Class racers would miss it. |
Re: 2017 SS/GT Indexes
To make the min for the new GT/AA 6.0 class the motor will have to be rated at 416...
how much actual HP will it take to go an 8.50 ET or 1.20 under?????? |
Re: 2017 SS/GT Indexes
8.50 @ 2500 lbs. has to be right around 785-800 hp.....
|
Re: 2017 SS/GT Indexes
The indexes for FGT/A - FGT/J are still not correct on NHRA's site.

Re: 2017 SS/GT Indexes

Re: 2017 SS/GT Indexes
Well i must say I'm have a real hard time running GTEA. I built the car and combo bcuz I wanted to be a GTAA car. I've had lots of "obstack-els" so not sure what I want to do. MPR and BC RACE CARS did a beautiful job on the new car but I can't seem to get excited.
My bro said it's just my ego wanting to be top of the "heap" that I need to remember it's still just a "heap"... My response was "spoken like a true GTCA guy... |

I agree I like GT/AA as most people like the class they have been in . I would like NHRA to call the new weight breaks a different name for the cars that run in those weight breaks . I will be contacting NHRA to see if they could change the name to??? |

Re: 2017 SS/GT Indexes
I find the indexes to be on the soft side from a GT perspective so it should entice some racers to move up into the classes. Right now, I suspect a lot of the current 8.0lb cars (current GT/AA with index of 10.10) with FWD conversions are running combinations with hp ratings around 340. So to move to the 7.5lb weight break allows them to take out 170 lbs and the index only drops to 10.00. If one can actually get their car light enough, that is a "free" 7 hundredths on the qualifying sheet.
I think its even more intriguing when you look at the 425hp 454 combinations in RWD cars that can now get to a 7lb weight break and remove over 400 lbs. Index would be 9.90 so on paper getting a "free" 2 tenths on the qualifying sheet. Another enticing thought is if the Hemi Cudas and Darts can do what other combinations like an LT1 Camaro is allowed to do and switch between SS and GT, they would now be running 8.30s on a 9.70 index. Maybe stick one of those elephant motors in a heavier based FWD conversion and does the conversation for the first 7 second GT car start? Obviously much easier said on paper than in reality but I'm intrigued by the combinations that may be developed now. I think NHRA should have kept the 0.15 increments between each weight break but time will tell if racers get out there with some of the high hp combinations from the late 60s and early 70s. |
Re: 2017 SS/GT Indexes
Would be nice if the fix the FGT indexes

So, the new 2017 FGT indexes keep the 8# class at the same index at the .25 offset, but then take it to something that I cannot relate to common sense at all. The worst example is FGT/A - it is a 6# class now posted at an 8.8 index. The exact same engine specs in a "natural" FSS/C car (6# class also) has an index of 9.65. I believe if you took that same engine and weight combo and put it into a dragster chassis, there is no way you could pick up the .85 of the difference in index. While I do not agree, nor can mathematically justify the .25 offset, I believe it is a complete misinterpretation of the capability of the different bodies to think more can be achieved by just changing bodies. The FGT/A to C is the major problem in the index's posted, but that's assuming that in the FGT/D on down classes you can pickup .25 going from a COPO body to a 3rd gen camaro body with the engine and weight staying the same. Just my thoughts... And I am completely aware that the tech guys get paid squat for what they do, and put up with us racers as a bonus. And now in 2017 it seems like there may be less guys... |
Re: 2017 SS/GT Indexes
I really cannot believe I've just read that some of you are complaining you have to change your letter A to an E???? Really? Would you like the name of a good graphics company??? I've got one, since I've had to change my numbers the last 5 years and added a new class to my car 2 years ago. Let me know.
