12 bolt gear oil

What's a safe amount of gear oil in 12 bolt ? I tend to over fill !

Best gear oil to use is Red Line Lightweight ShockProof. It has gl6 where as most others only have gl5. The gears never really touch each other, the oil is a cushion.

Second vote for Red Line Lightweight ShockProof, 1 qt. Plus they support sportsman racing and are one of our sponsors.

Re: 12 bolt gear oil

If the cover retains the OE design, a quart of gear oil will be out in the axle tubes before you pass the 330' clocks. Think about that.

How are they supporting us?

Re: 12 bolt gear oil

They are a sponsor for our three car S/SS team.

They also sponsor Jimmy Defrank, another S/SS racer you might recognize.

There are many companies that support S/SS racers across the country. Just because you don't see them on a contingency sheet doesn't mean that don't support S/SS racing.

Ok, that's what I assumed. I was hoping I was missing something as I use/buy their products.

I've always used two simply because I don't know any better...

Beware of the redline stuff. It has changed since they were bought out.0

I have 5 Gallons of the old Heavy Shockproof (Red) if anybody would want it ... Never opened ... Back when we were going through 6.00 gears every 50 runs, I tried this . It did help .... But a 9 in. was the cure ....

Re: 12 bolt gear oil

I wonder if anybody has ever tested oil level in a 12 bolt. I think that your better to have a slight over fill then an underfill condition. If there is not enough oil then the gear runs dry and you create friction. I can't imagine there is much ET between running 1 and 2 qts. That's just me

Re: 12 bolt gear oil

The gears will not run dry with 1 qt. My only concern would be the axle bearings. Sounds like 1 qt is what many use.

I have used the redline lightweight and super lightweight for years and love it. Rear and stickshift transmissions.

Please explain what has changed and what I should be concerned about? Did I miss a memo?

I have 2 qts of Richmond GL-5 in my 12 bolt, and put 220-240 runs a season on my pro gears. I think these gears have been in for at least 4 seasons.

Darrel, This has been discussed here before,..several times.
I've run 1 qt. 85-90 synthetic, quite a bit ,and never hurt anything.
The cover design on a 12 bolt, directs oil right to the side bearings anyway.

That being said, it's been determined by several racers, that a lot of the oil goes up into the axle tubes anyway, and that 2 qts. won't hurt you much.

A personal observation: If you are going to try some kind of super light concoction for a record run or something, make sure the gears are well broken in with the regular stuff first.
:-(

I would like to know about your findings as well?

Re: 12 bolt gear oil

2qts should be just right. As far as axle bearings go on axles like a Ford 9" the seal is in the tube behind the bearing from the factory. I can't remember how it is with c clip eliminators. I never saw the advantage of the heavy shockproof in a rear. I prefer flow over it sticking to non wear parts. It's impressive if you disassemble as gar as how it coats everything.
As far as support goes I don't think anyone holds a candle to Lucas for support and their products are great. I like Lucas synthetic gear lube.
