Old Stock class guides, pre 1960

Seems NHRA can't find the guides for pre 1960 cars except Chev.
Does anyone have access to a set? I would like to get my 57 Ford
out of a long retirement and play some.

Thanks,

Ron.

Re: Old Stock class guides, pre 1960

Tony,
Pat Cvengros at NHRA is saying they don't have the listings for anything except GM
pre 1960 so nothing else can run Stock.

He says they were never sent by Ford, Mopar, etc. I know they were in the books since I started running in Stock back in 1962 and many non GM's ran for years
until the 10 year rule was tried in 1970.

I need some proof for them.

Thanks,

Ron.

I have old classification guides, but they are not applicable today. By NHRA policy and rules, only those combinations listed in the current set of guides are accepted.

Re: Old Stock class guides, pre 1960

The only good 57 Ford would be the 300 HP supercharged 312. The rest have to much horsepower.

Re: Old Stock class guides, pre 1960

I also have an old classification guide. The Ford section goes all the way back to 1950. When these old class guides were available I think that you could buy the engine spec guide also. Maybe an old engine builder still has one. I know when Rich Mulenhardt,RIP, got his truck OK'd he had to send a lot of paper work to NHRA. That truck combo was not in the guide. By the way that blown 312 is available in every model Ford offered in 57. Good luck, I think it's cool to see the old cars back. Long live junior stock!

NHRA had all these guides and misplaced (?) them years ago. Why wouldn't
they accept a copy of their own guides?
Strangely enough 55 up chev's are still in their copies.....Every other brand is gone.
I remember my first Jr Stock Elim loss was to a 52 Olds called Tokyo Rose. (in 1962)

In the online Stock Blueprint Guide Right now 1956,and 57 Chevrolets show no intake manifold numbers.

I doubt is they misplaced them. I suspect the major reason they eliminated so many of the listings is because of the inability to support the tech side of things. When Jr Stock was begun, it was class guide only, no tech bulletins. The tech bulletins came later as racers began to get serious and the need was great to root out cheaters. It's one thing to classify someone's daily street car or family car driven off the street, but when people began building purpose built race cars the verification becomes much more involved. Think about it, there were no hot rod parts directed toward stockers. Even the first rate of lift camshafts did not come along until the mid 1960s. NHRA didn't build a good technical information base until the mid 1960s. When the current Stock Eliminator was begun in 1971, part of the change was the limitation to the set of technical information they had. There are some leftover remnants of that move that can be noted in the fact that there are Oldsmobile tech sheets back to 1949, but the classification guide stops for Oldsmobile in 1960. Also, Cadillac has classification sheets back to 1955, but no tech specs until 1977. To expect NHRA to do the work (read that as spend the money) to fill out there technical specs to meet all of American auto production since 1950 is unrealistic; they don't support what they have now very well.

Thanks,

Ron.Could narrow it down some. There six engines listed and 52 body combos. 26 with a stick and 26 with a FOM. I have to hand print them for you.

Re: Old Stock class guides, pre 1960

So what would happen if someone showed up at an NHRA Lucas Oil event with a vehicle that is listed in the Stock Car Guide (for example, a 1955 Cadillac) but there are no tech spec's published/available? IIRC the rulebook states that the vehicle must be listed in the Guide, but there is no mention of technical information.

As loose as the rules have been/are interpreted, and if the information was/is still available in some format, how difficult would it be to "recreate" those lists and fill-in the missing documentation. The complaint that it would be too costly doesn't seem to be a reason not to do this. How hard would it be to build a Microsoft Word document?

I know some folks have complained that there are too many "classes" in Stock and Super/Stock Eliminator, but has anyone had a problem with too many valid "combinations" in the Guide?

Re: Old Stock class guides, pre 1960

Technically, Lew, they have to let the car race. Their problem comes if they have to verify that it is legal. Right now, all they have is bore, stroke and displacement.

The Retractable hdt (Skyliner) w/ the 300, 270, and 245 hp with auto would be great.

Thanks,

If you've never seen a retractable Skliner in operation, you have to see it to believe it:

Thanks,

Ron. 57 Hardtop Skyliner (Rtract) 245 hp 15.98, w/FOM 16.32, 270 hp 14.50, w/FOM 14.81 and 300hp 13.05, w/FOM 13.33. This is why I asked for a certain body style. It's like this for every body style and is two more engines. Hope this helps.

More projects for another lifetime! As long as I have the book out. Hdtp Cpe 5 (DeVille) 250 hp 17.33 w/Hyd 17.69 and 270hp 16.05 w/Hyd 16.38. Those old trannys must weigh as much as the engines.

Bill Parham and Gordon Payne were local racers. Gordon was working on his engineering degree. He then went to work for Ford, had to move to Michigan. Always fast. Great guys.

I have my 1962 guide that has updates to 1970. What do you guys want?
It goes back as far as 1950 on some combinations.
Just the guide, not the specs or part numbers.

Adger,
Would you scan some 57 Ford pgs so I can send them to NHRA and
prove they exist!

Thanks,

Ron.

Re: Old Stock class guides, pre 1960

I asked NHRA about other pre 1960 cars when they added the 55 thru 59 Chevrolets to stock a few years ago. The answer was they have access to the old class guides but there were no engine specs for most of the older cars.

Would someone scan the 57 Ford pgs for me?

Although Y-Block Fords were not competitive yrs ago I think w/todays rules
they could be especially the supercharged 312 which held records for a decade.

Thanks everyone for your comments and help.

Ron.

I looked at my guide. It has NHRA 1969 at the bottom of the page. For example the two door sedan with fordomatic breaks 11.18 so it is a F, G. H car. A couple years ago I mentioned this to Pat. There was no interest there. Pat was probably not born when we raced Jr Stock.

Probably not born when the supercharged Studebaker Larks were in the books then either.
They were there at one time. There was one in Div. 1 .Probably a killer car too.
Never mind 50's.We're talking 60's.
Where did they go? Who gets to decide that they don't want them in the books anymore?
Dwight? Do you know?

Ron.

IF this is in regards to George Cureton's long history in Junior Stock/Stock, the name "TOKYO ROSE" did not come about until his 56 Chevrolet Sedan Delivery. The car was to be painted an orange color, but it came out more of a rose color, hence the naming of the car, "TOKYO ROSE". This was the FIRST rendition of the 56 Sedan Delivery, and after it was wrecked in a towing accident, when it was finally repainted, they painted it blue with white stripes on the roof. He also kept the name for the rest of his race cars, regardless of color. I "sort of" know the guy who currently owns that car in Pennsylvania, and have given him parts to help in putting the car together. IF it's a different car you were referring to, my apologies. IMO, ANY car should be allowed to race in Stock, and not just "select" ones. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

On opening day 1962 @ Aquasco Speedway in MD I raced a 52 Olds
4dr with "Tokyo Rose" in foot high letters down the side (Asian type script). It was a towed in car.
A dark color maybe black. Not sure if it was George Cureton's car but, it
sure was fast!
