Re: Bob Reed passing?
Sad to report that it is true. Bullet Bob passed last night. He was a good friend for many years and truly one of a kind. RIP Bob My favorite quote of Bob's was "I told her (his girlfriend) if she's gonna ride up and down the road with me she has to do two things - know the firing order of a hemi and she can't wear pants bigger than mine" Thanks for the memories!

Re: Bob Reed passing?
I met Bob when we moved to Bradenton in 1981. Saw him many times, sold him parts, and considered him a smart, neat guy.Time to go sit in the corner and cry a while as to me he would be one of those guys that would always be around.May he rest in peace, John Kissel K242

Re: Bob Reed passing?
The first time ever, that I raced in an event outside of Maine and New Hampshire, I traveled to MIR to an Ihra div. 1 race in 2002. After a storied trip getting there, He was one of the first people I met after I got parked for the weekend, pitted just a few spaces apart. He asked to borrow my helmet for a few minutes, promising to return it asap, which he did . the next morning after making a test run, he came over with another guy and was crawling around under my car , the duster I had back then. they got up, and asked "who built this thing?" I kind of shy said "I did , is there something wrong?" Bob said "hell no, that is one bad *** car, we just went up and watched you run, and by the way this is my friend Ronnie Sox" Me being a mopar guy , I couldn't believe it, We spent a lot of time together that weekend , I don't think ive laughed that hard since, Bob was a riot to be around, I stayed in touch with him over the years, and actually planed to try to see him later this month. Super Stock lost a great one, he will be missed by many , Im sure I will.....

Re: Bob Reed passing?
Bob was a good friend of my dad. I have good memories of watching him race at the local tracks when I was a kid, before he moved down south. He used to come up to the old timers race at MCIR in the late 90's early 2000's to race and see old friends. RIP Bob

Re: Bob Reed passing?
I absolutely loved that silver car-saw a feature on him where he talked about "Big Boy Toys"-I could watch that car run forever and never get tired of it.RIP Bob Doug Schriener

Re: Bob Reed passing?
We met up with Bob a few times back in our racing days, he was smart, cool, kind and as funny as hell!
Bullet Bob, you where a great drag racer but most of all a greater guy, Rest in Peace my friend. |
Re: Bob Reed passing?
Got to know Bob pretty well the past 15 years. Lately he would ask me if I got tired by the end of the day I would tell him I wasn't to much younger than him of course I got tired. Great guy and racer. Will be missed by everyone at Georges engine shop.
RIP Rich Simone |
Re: Bob Reed passing?
I never will forget the first time I met Bob back in the '80's. I was a newbee and he was a kingpin. He talked to me like he had known me for decades, treated me like "one of the guys". He made me feel so good, I am sad that he has passed, and I think Bullet Bob Reed was a great guy.

Re: Bob Reed passing?
Bob was a funny guy. Once in Orlando he had to tear down , Gary Russell had just brought his head up caring it with one hand. Bob came up with his and it took two of them to care it. Bob laughed and said "this is a real head " He will be greatly missed. R.I.P. my friend. Fred & JoAnn Connell

Re: Bob Reed passing?
I was pitted next to Bob at the Gators back in the 80's when we were both running SS. I saw him come back from a run and he was wearing cowboy boots. I asked him if he always wore them when he drives, and he said " I only take them off for one thing .... well maybe two things." I remember laughing so hard I almost peed! We were friends from then on. R.I.P. Bullet Bob Reed. Jim

Re: Bob Reed passing?
RIP. Condolences to family, friends.

Re: Bob Reed passing?
Bob was a great guy. I can see him now with his cowboy boots on telling someone to their face B.S. when they said something wrong. I also remember years ago down at Orlando and he was making a TT beside a slower car and 3rd gear he got side ways swapped lanes and continued down the wrong lane under power. The slower car had one really good time slip. Good buy old friend.

Re: Bob Reed passing?
I remember Bob getting out of his car in staging lanes @ Norwalk in the early 90's after he just went three consecutive 8.76's.He was standing there in his cowboy boots and the track official asked him where was his driving shoes, he said son I've been driving in these boots longer than you been alive ! He then got into the 'Cuda and let er rip ! Went over to his trailer after that run and he treated you like he knew you forever. What a legend, he will be missed but not forgotten. Rest In Peace Bob

Re: Bob Reed passing?
He was on the show pass time on the Speed channel now Velocity where they guess how fast his car go down the 1/4 mile. It was great. He was wearing cowboy boots while shifting his car!!

Re: Bob Reed passing?
A true legend in this sport. That Pass Time episode was a classic. Too many of the old Marion racers have passed in the last few years. RIP

Re: Bob Reed passing?
I have always been impressed with Bob sticking with a 4-speed car, when it wasn't the way to go any more. He was one of the last "true" Hemi 4-speed drivers, and he will be missed. R.I.P.

Re: Bob Reed passing?
Very sorry to hear of Mr Reed's passing.
I met Mr Reed at my first national event in the early 90's. I was waiting at the scales after a time trial when this gentleman walks up to my car yelling, "That ole Buick is running out of fuel at the top end!" I was a newbie and clearly in over my head. Never had raced any kind of car until I got my Buick. He repeated himself and wanted to know why I couldn't hear/feel the car nosing over? Told him I was brand new to the sport and while I had the desire and passion to drive the car, I lacked the knowledge, skill and ability to race it! He had quite a laugh at my expense. He was gracious enough to explain on my car what was wrong and then invited me over to his car to see a correct fuel delivery system. That's when he introduced himself. While I was new to the sport as a competitor, I certainly knew who Mr Reed was and couldn't believe he would take the time to help me out! Considering how poorly I was doing it would have been just as easy not to say anything to the newest duck in the big pond. The next race I saw him at he came over and looked under the hood before saying anything to see if I took his advice. Which I had done. It wasn't the last time Bob helped me out. Dick McConnell |

Re: Bob Reed passing?
Bob Reed was the racers racer. He would help you with parts or advice and treated everyone like he had known them forever. He could also see BS a mile off and if he was talking you should have been paying attention.
People should be aware that the last Barracuda Ronnie Sox competed with before he passed in 2006 was built and provided by Bob because he could see the desire was still there. Those two had a great time racing together for about a year until Ronnie could not handle the travel any more. I will always remember that smile when Ronnie would get back from a run. I feel they will race together again soon. D Christie |

Re: Bob Reed passing?
A quote from anouther post,
"A few years ago at Mopars at the Rock...he had just made an 8 sec pass and was coming up the return road back to his trailer which was just a few pit spots down from me. I walked up as he was getting out of his car w/ a Coors light in his hand. I laughed, he looked at me, looked at his beer and said...."this is the damndest place I ever seen, stopped to get my timeslip and some fella came runnin out the woods and handed me this beer!" He just laughed and smiled, lol." |
Re: Bob Reed passing?
Anouther
"Once at Farmington--he got crazy side ways --you could read his name on both sides of the car from starting line--he got it straight ans STOMPED it again--when he came up the return road he stopped threw open passenger door to pick up his girl--he had a cig in his hand and another in his mouth--just a shaking--he hollered out--"that Richard Petty ain't got nothing on me!" I totally agree Once at Farmington--I was helping/watching him R&R a head on the Hemi--there was a steel shim head gasket in the grass--looked more used than the one on our honing station--he said hand me that gasket--he wiped the grass off and slapped it on--I asked you think that will work and not leak? He said all Hemis leak--big deal. I remember him running and breaking a record at Virginia Motorsports Park--it was a BIG deal--guy walked up to him and said I want to buy that Hemi--Bob gave him some crazy price--the guy said OK take it out--so the deal was made right then and there--I am sure the man thought he was getting a cutting edge unit--well...I had seen it go together that previous week at Bobs shop--it had THREE different brand pistons and was put together with parts from all over the shop and who knows what all--it was a Mutt but then it did run and set the record--It was truly a slap together out of leftover junk engine--Bob said it was the chassis and car ( and of course Driver LOL) while he counted that fat stack Saw him sell the Silver Bullet for Big $$$ a time or two after a hot run--only to go home and drag out the latest version that he had been crafting on--this was an all the time thing so when THE Silver Bullet Hemi car comes up for sale I will be laughing--he cranked them out." |
Re: Bob Reed passing?
Last one,
Gosh the tales just keep popping into my mind about ole Bob--I have stood in his front yard after watching him thrash to get a new Hemi in the car--and after a "few" cold Coors lights--and then see him break in the rings out in front of the house--8 second car ripping up the neighborhood--now THAT is fun to watch!!!! Moma's get your kids out of the road He took his front wheel bearings with no grease--dipped them in STP and hung them to drip off --then installed--no grease ever One of the most amazing things I ever saw was the car was sitting outside the shop on the concrete--in neutral--wind came up and car moved a long way I asked --he says--rolling resistance on a race car should be like that--wasn't mine?? Duh--no!!! If you sit down and think about that a while you will understand just how he did so many record breaking things with a drag car--I SWEAR that happened exactly as I described! |
