459 Chevy Intake

How much horse power can be made with a 459 intake? On a 327 stroker, possibly a 383. Acid ported and hand ported. What kind of power levels do the 327 300 make with a 459 and AFB in stocker form? Any if would be helpful. Thanks.

Not as much as an out of the box Edelbrock alum intake manifold.....

Obviously, im gonna build an engine for a Factory stock style class. Similar to the FAST series. Has to have factory carb and intake. But you can port heads, increase cubic inches, different cam ,etc. Just wondering what the limits of the 459 intake are?

Scott, Probably not hearing anything because nobody here has first hand knowledge .

There might be one or two 300 hp Stockers out there , but that doesn't help you much with a 383.

All I know is it's worth a bunch over a real 283 intake.

Does the carb have to be stone stock, or NHRA Stock?

Obviously, I didn't realize you were building an engine for a factory stock style class....sorry......

Acid ported and hand ported in stock ????? Now who would incriminate themselves by admitting this?

I would guess an average 350 stocker engine with a 750 Q-jet with that manifold you asked about is in the 415-425 HP range. A really good motor is in the 430-440. The 459 as all the stock SBC manifolds due, fall off in the higher RPM ranges. Important the cam works with the manifold. (Acid dipped or not.)

This is not for a stocker. I was saying that the class I'm gonna run that the intake can be modified.

Mark, thanks. It can be an NHRA Stock carb. I was gonna try to run a 409 400 hp AFB carb as it's bigger then the 327 carb

Those kinds of threads do tend to be pretty quiet. lol
Good thing the OP cleared it up by saying he can modify it in his class.

If your running FAST and all they're worried about is it appearing stock could you have a composite mold made of the top of the intake then lay it over and attach it to a better performing aluminum intake?

Why not a 780 or 850 cfm Holley? Both are carbs listed for NHRA Stock engines.

It would be for a 1962 or 1963 327 300h.p. combo. Can't run a Holley. Has to be an AFB with the 459 intake.

Run a large AFB like the one that came on a 67 440 GTX, it has the small airhorn so it will look stock and yet flow at least 100 CFM more than a 409 AFB.

Thanks Paul. Have a list number for that carb. Thanks.

Scott
