Re: Shooting at Great Lakes Dragaway
This was very unfortunate
The shooter was not speeding in a vehicle at this time so I do not see this case ever being solved |
Re: Shooting at Great Lakes Dragaway
OK guys this is what happened without sounding RACIST ---Larry's Fun Fest is a weekend event held yearly at Great Lakes Dragaway. This event caters to or is geared
to MOSTLY BLACKS/African Americans/Negroes what ever is politically correct here ---It is mostly a car show with some drag racing thrown in-usually mostly street cars but a few "drag" cars too-- it has lotsa music- women dressed suggestively/provocatively to appeal to the males in attendance and cruising around the pits(display area)- visiting etc.---The typical vehicle you all see here will be what some might call Ghetto cruisers-low riders- pimp mobiles etc. 20-24 inch wheels, outrageous colors of paint jobs tons of chrome or gold plating everything you could imagine done to, in, or on a vehicle thrown in too. All the while alcohol is being served adjacent even into the pit area so lots of people are pretty liquored up by the time nightfall comes some might be "stoned" because some brought their own chemicals/grass whatever. This event would kinda remind some of when NHRA had the compact car races a few years back. Kind of the same scenario. It has gotten a bad reputation in the last few years because some "problems" required law enforcement intervention. There was even talk because of the problems of either scaling back the event or cancelling it altogether. Now the "shooter" supposedly was a gang member and the victims were according to police reports known gang members. It was supposedly a gang retaliation. Some of the people involved either the shooter or the victims were according to police reports from Aurora, Illinois which has a "large " black population and is known to have a large gang presence also. The media in the area Chicago/Milwaukee metropolitan have been very careful in their reporting and has basically said that 3 people were shot at an automotive event or at an automotive race nothing about a drag strip in the headlines. Which I guess is great no bad publicity for drag racing So thats what's going on don't know who the victims are or if they have apprehended the shooter at last report. As I said I'm not trying to be RACIST just trying to give you a picture of the crowd, vehicles, atmosphere etc of the event--THIS EVENT IS PROMOTED PRIMARILY AND GEARED TO THE BLACK COMMUNITY.---Although I imagine anyone can attend as I said it is mainly blacks that will be in attendence--- FED 387 |

Can't remember when anything like this has ever occurred. I'm sure the local authorities will be hard at work and get to the bottom of this. |
Re: Shooting at Great Lakes Dragaway
No surprise here, that place was rough back in the eighties.....one of the few tracks I visited back then with a beer garden.....

Re: Shooting at Great Lakes Dragaway
Latest update ---the 3 victims were known gang members and on BOND for felonies according to the police---the shooter has not been identified nor captured at this point still at large----The victims families have been very hesitant to offer any info nor cooperate with the police in the investigation. It was definitely a gang assassination according to law enforcement--- But he was "such a good boy wonderful father to his kids"--I cannot imagine why anybody would do something like this!!!!!-- FED 387

Did ANYTHING that you you shared make this tragedy any easier to understand? The website link in the first post did a much better job. Bottom line is that three HUMAN BEINGS were killed at Great Lakes Dragaway. The rest of the information you included was unnecessary. |

A couple of them were messing with cars, leaning on them or some such nonsense. Al Provost chased them away and stood guard till we got back with our water jugs. |

Since when have numerical facts become racist? That whole reply was blindly stupid. |
Re: Shooting at Great Lakes Dragaway
I've become numb to the Alinsky tactic of calling someone a racist without any proof. The accusation no longer carries any weight with me. As Saul Alinsky wrote in "Rules for Radicals", there is no defense when someone accuses you of being a racist. You cannot prove you aren't one. But your integrity and character can be publicly damaged all the same. While this used to be a tactic only used by radicals, this and many others thrown around by liberal thinking people are now mainstream.

Re: Shooting at Great Lakes Dragaway
I used to promote musclecar shows/races and we booked Union Grove back in the 80s. It is the only track I've ever been to where the announcer is shilling 12 packs of Old Style instead of hot dogs. Looking at the stands, I'd guess every 2nd or 3rd person had a pack on the floor in front of them. So if things are still the same, I'm only surprised that this sort of thing doesn't happen more often there.
Gateway in St Louis has had Black Sunday for years. It's put on by a benevolent organization with proceeds going to help those in need. It has been there for years and other than the NHRA nationals seems to be one of the track's largest events. I have never heard of any problems those weekends, other than the minor stuff that happens at every race. And yes, the gates are open to all and they pay good prize money. The gang shootings are out of control in most of the country. I hate to see them happening at a track because every national news source I saw referred to it as a drag strip/drag racing shooting. |

Black, white, hispanic, native american or otherwise, this kind of violence is a global social issue. Look at the middle east.
It is a tragedy that innocent law abiding people have to live with this, but I feel no sorrow for these thug gang members, they got what the signed up for. Oh by the way, Great Lakes needs to reassess their business model. |

Re: Shooting at Great Lakes Dragaway
Racist or not racist isn't the question here, it took a long time to climb up the civilized society ladder, now it's back 1500 years and spreading with this type of culture mentality. Quite a difference between 1960 and now, and this type of activity could tear this country down faster than any enemy we face and it's getting worse. Maybe there are to many deep rooted differences in this country to make it work,? or maybe just a lack of IQ? We need to find an answer quick, I don't want to have to pick a side.

Re: Shooting at Great Lakes Dragaway
Ok guys. For many years this event was called BLACK SUNDAY. Only recently has it been called Larry's Fun Fest. Google it look at you tube and draw your own conclusions as to who they are appealing to. Now I wholeheartedly agree that not everyone in attendance was a behavior problem but apparently a few people were. As for the human beings that were shot so much for cum baya attitude. Their are bad people in every race or ethnic group look at you tube see what the crowd cars etc look like then draw your own conclusion

Re: Shooting at Great Lakes Dragaway
OK, guys, the race baiting in the name of political correctness has to stop. The fastest way to try to shut up an opposing position is with a phony charge of racism. That has created more polarization than any other societal ill that we face. I feel for the rest of the attendees of that event regardless of what race they are. They didn't need gang activity showing up and ruining the day for everybody. Chances exist that the event won't be scheduled again next year because some little malcontent had to ruin it for everybody. The damage was done and it doesn't matter what race the individuals there are. Cars seem to be a good thing to get involved with as a means to have fun,put aside your differences, and learn to get along. After all there are far greater things in life than racism, political correctness, gangs, drugs, and urban problems. That stuff divides. It doesn't benefit anybody like a good safe car event will. Back some 25 years or so ago, a rather visionary sort named Big Willie Robinson came up with the idea of using drag racing as a way to get people to reach out beyond themselves. After much stalling and issues from the bureaucracy, he was able to operate Brotherhood Raceway Park on Terminal Island near San Pedro at the harbor. (Great air,by the way).He stressed that we were there to race and have a good time, all racers and races were welcome, don't bring your problems, bring your cars and let's race. He did more good than any liberal social activism program ever did. He also was the enforcer if anybody needed it. He was big enough to do it. The land eventually got developed and it came to an end. The street legal drags programs came out and accomplished much the same thing.Let's not let a bad experience ruin racing, cars, enjoyment of life or anything else for any of us. Move on and quit the name calling and bickering among ourselves.
