NHRA announced today that the Pro Stock Car category will feature 16-car fields at all 24 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series national events in 2018. NHRA came to this decision after a collaborative and productive meeting with several Pro Stock drivers and teams. The group discussed a few initiatives that would serve as alternatives to NHRA's previous decision to run 8-car fields at nine national events.
One of the ideas from the meeting involved the possibility of including a new engine platform that NHRA's Tech Department is evaluating. NHRA will continue to work with Pro Stock teams and manufacturers this year, carefully evaluating key metrics and supporting initiatives to generate interest.

"We all share a common goal to make the Pro Stock category grow," said NHRA president Peter Clifford. "It's exciting to see that the teams came to us with collaborative ideas and started an open dialogue that resulted in new solutions

My first impression, could they be modernizing??? Say OEMish...LS, Coyote, Gen3 Hemi + Blower???

Any Brand? The "cars" are cookie cutter, all look the same, I hope this is a joke, haven't been a fan for awhile but that doesn't mean I want them to fail, this can't be acceptable

A spec engine would result in Gas Funny Car. Then Toyota would jump in with factory money. Then one or more teams could make some cosmetic changes and become Camrys. That might result in 16+ cars.

If they go to this "any engine in any car", and the HEMI is down on power, who would build a Hemi for any bodied car? It will be all Chevy power.

I heard on an interview with Erica Enders @ SEMA yesterday that they got 16 cars back at all 24 races but, their purses will be cut by 1/2 million dollars. They are working with other companies to help make up that loss in cash.
