Trans shield rule??
I am looking for some clarification on the new TRANS SHIELD rule.
What is required for a trans shield / blanket? Will an ultra bell be good, or do you need more? |
Re: Trans shield rule??
I was not aware they changed it this year. Glad I saw this while mine is out of the car.

Re: Trans shield rule??
From what I understand when you're in Stock Eliminator and running quicker than 10.99, you must now either have a SFI-approved trans case (ATI, Reid or JW case), a SFI-approved shield or a SFI-approved blanket. An SFI-approved bell housing isn't required on any Stock Eliminator automatics unless you're quicker than 9.99 from what I recall.

Re: Trans shield rule??
No, I understand the 10.99 is based on what you actually run. If one car ran 10:98 he would need it and if an identical car ran 11.01 he would not need it. I would hope I am wrong on this but it is what I have been told.

Re: Trans shield rule??
So, nothing for SS? I have a TCI shield on mine. Where did you guys see the new rule changes?

Re: Trans shield rule??
Here's the wording for stock...
"any car running quicker than 10.99 must be equipped with a transmission shield meeting SFI Spec 4.1. Any car running quicker than 9.99, SFI 29.1 automatic transmission flexplate and SFI 30.1 flexplate shield mandatory. See General Regulations 2:12, 2:14." General reg 2:14 doesn't provide any further clarity but if running a car that goes 10.99 or quicker then I sure wouldn't show up without a blanket or shield. May very well be one of the "easy tech" items they can check easily in the lanes, kinda like tethers; they just have to bend down further. |
Re: Trans shield rule??
Stock rule is here:
Any car running quicker than 10.99 must be equipped with a transmission shield meeting SFI Spec 4.1. Any car running quicker then 9.99, SFI 29.1 automatic transmission flexplate and SFI 30.1 flexplate shield mandatory. As already posted, the Ultra Bell alone is not a transmission shield, but will serve as the flexplate shield if you need one. Quote:
Cars in SS/AH through SS/MA, FSS/A through FSS/M, and any car running quicker than 10.99 must be equipped with a transmission shield meeting SFI Spec 4.1. Cars in SS/AH through SS/JA and FSS/A through FSS/M, SFI 29.1 automatic transmission flexplate and SFI 30.1 flexplate shield mandatory. Aftermarket automatic transmission bellhousing permitted; must be labeled as meeting SFI Spec 30.1 for automatic transmission flexplate shields and must be NHRA-accepted. Aftermarket OEM-style replica case, NHRA-accepted, permitted. See General Regulations 2:14. Cars in GT/AA through GT/LA, FGT/A through FGT/J, and any car running quicker than 10.99 must be equipped with a transmission shield meeting SFI Spec 4.1. Cars in GT/AA through GT/GA and FGT/A through FGT/J, SFI 29.1 automatic transmission flexplate and SFI 30.1 flexplate shield mandatory. |
Re: Trans shield rule??
What difference does it make on your e.t. If a transmission blows up I think you would
want the protection. |

This is the kind of crap I've been talking about for years. They need ONE rule: Any car running quicker than 10.99 must be equipped with a transmission shield meeting SFI Spec 4.1. Any car running quicker then 9.99, SFI 29.1 automatic transmission flexplate and SFI 30.1 flexplate shield mandatory. Period. Done. By jacking around with adding requirements by class, you end up with ridiculous things like cars running 11.00 needing to meet a FAR higher safety standard than another car running 10.00, cars needing to meet different rules despite having LITERALLY changed nothing but the decals on the windshield, and cars that meet 100% of the safety rules to compete at XYZ track one week, but the very same car on the very same track suddenly deemed unsafe the next week because it is a different type of event. It's asinine. There should be one set of rules for everyone! |
Re: Trans shield rule??
A Jegs 4.1 transmission shield/blanket is available and inexpensive, although only good for 2 years. The one I had before I went to a complete SFI case did NOT have a date on it...
Jegs link Most stock 1st gen Camaros cannot fit a bolt on flexplate shield without modifying (hammering) the floor pan. Someone got the memo on this, as the RCI blanket is now $290. It was less than $100 about 5 years ago. |
Re: Trans shield rule??
For those with a powerglide, this is a very good case for the money:
