Trans shields for 2018

Does anybody have any info regarding the use of trans shields for 2018 in stock and super stock

Re: Trans shields for 2018

If you run faster than 10.99 or quicker you need one for Stock.

Re: Trans shields for 2018

Is it just for the bellhousing or for the case as well

HR9121 02-14-2018 11:23 PM

Re: Trans shields for 2018

Case as well.

Paul Precht 02-14-2018 11:30 PM

Re: Trans shields for 2018

Case only for 10.0 to 10.99 the way I read it.

Re: Trans shields for 2018

For Stock...

10.99 and quicker SFI 4.1 transmission shield required.

9.99 and quicker SFI 30.1 flexplate shield required.

While"Safety First" is a wise and well thought premonition. Here are some of the concerns from my self and other racers.

With all due respect to the NHRA rule book, and rules of Stock Eliminator
( as they may still be in affect?? )

First off, just exactly, how is one to install a trans shield on a car with a stock floorboard with no modifications to, said floorboard.

BTW, I was wondering how many catastrophic trans failure have we had in stock in the last 20 years that has this new rule coming in?

This is getting crazy!

Does this apply to manual transmissions also? Obviously we are running a SFI bellhousing all ready.

No just automatics. We have scatter shields already.

Man so glad I switched to a 4 speed lol :)!

Glen you are probably supposed to switch to a SFI case 400 or powerglide ( couldn't find a SFI case 350 or 200 in my quick search) Don't worry it only adds another $1500 to the cost of building a transmission.

Blankets are a viable option, Jegs sells them for a little over 100 bucks although the blanket SFI life is only two years.....I have seen that th 200 shield and between my shifter and bracket,my brace, and my floor it looks like a royal pain to attach.....

Actually I've ran shields on stock tunnels and they will clear it's just a pain to deal with , when pulling trans in and out .

For sub 10.00 second cars don't forget the SFI 29.1 flex plate.

I think I will take all of the different SFI numbers that I have to have on my car and buy a lottery ticket with those same SFI numbers. That should be a safe bet.

Hey Larry, you got a great idea. Any money left over will buy some gas.

Does anyone use the CSR shield option?

I remember trans builder Hutch on Yellow Bullet was going to try to manufacture one as well...he might be more motivated now that this new rule comes into effect..

I haven't heard good things about CSR in a while in terms of product availability or company stability in general.

I'm a Glide guy but I feel that the SFI case is well worth the extra cost once in install one. It is so much easier to access the top bellhousing bolts and deal with the dipstick during installation.

Re: Trans shields for 2018

Yes, I tried to phone the company (which in located in Florida I think) to directly order a shield and they were delayed quite a bit with production due to a lack of material. I am unsure how they are doing today.

I ended up buying a used CSR shield locally and it actually fit well on my TH-400 with a stock Monte floor. The trans was already out which made the install much better. I also used a Lokar flexible dipstick (which can have the certified locking end) which helped a lot and have also "hole sawed" some bellhousing acess holes (with covers in the firewall) to make installing the bellhousing bolts much easier..

I am just a bracket guy but hopefully this can help other guys..

Hey guys, does anyone have connections with a good carbon fibre supplier? Hutch would make them if he could get a good source, he does great trans work you can check it out at YellowBullet..

I'm very aware and forecasted this year's ago. The problem is the carbon fiber people have worn me the heck out. I'm not sure what to do at this point.

I believe the shields must be SFI certified and re certified every so many years so home made won't get you through Tech.

Hey guys contact Hutch at..

http://hutchtrans.com/shop/

Perhaps if enough interest is there, and carbon fibre suppliers are found; a alternate source for shields can come though. If someone here has connections in the carbon fibre world this might help a lot..

I can tell you that the shields would be top notch certifiable units as Hutch is a big time trans guy..

If anyone is interested I am have blankets made specifically for 200 Metric Trans. I could not get one to fit my Nova without major work and they will be lighter than the aluminum shields. If interested email me at kenkeir@gmail.com or call the shop. 301-855-4988

For those running a TH-350 trans, ATI is coming out with an SFI-approved case. Supposed to be this summer.

Re: Trans shields for 2018

Both the transmission rigid shields and blankets must meet the requirements of SFI Spec 4.1.
The transmission rigid shield must be inspected every 5 years and the blanket, every 2 years.

I just installed a trans shield for my 4th gen Camaro on a metric 200. Came from Tom Waters Race Car Products. It bolts on to two brackets (supplied) that attach to each side of the pan rail. No twisty straps. Fits real nice and did it with the trans in the car. They can be reached at 407-240-8626. Bill Moulding

Hi Bill, thanks for the info. Do you have any installed photos?

I got my blanket from Ken Keir just in time to throw it in the trailer and install at the track the next morning. Was easy enough to get on my metric 200 and I have the brace. I need to re do it just a little better but it's fine. Ken is a racer too and very easy to work with.

I'm guessing that the blanket may not fit at all on an A-Body big block/727.

Darrell sorry I never took any pics. I had the use of a friends hoist and its back in the trailer now.

MJ I use a B&M Prostick and its trans bracket went on with the same bolts as the shield bracket (with some light massage). No brace.

Re: Trans shields for 2018

I also just installed the Tom Waters shield on my metric 200. I had a new brace made to allow the shield to fit. The new brace had a slight interference with the Lokar dipstick, so I also re located the dip stick to the location in front of the servo that was originally used for some sort of a kickdown cable. Masta Performance in Michigan makes a dipstick tube to fit this arrangement and it fits perfectly and has a bracket that bolts to the bellhousing. It is Masta's P/N 200TV.
I use a Hurst Quarter stick and the cable bracket that mounts to the trans required some tweaking (grinding for clearance).
