Carguy49's Road Trip - Final Chapter

This is, without a doubt, the hardest thread that I have ever started on here.

Those of you that remember it, I did a road trip story about my wife and I traveling around the U.S on an awesome Road Trip in 2015. The trip was planned because my wife (Joan) was dealing with bone cancer and still is.

Since that time we have had numerous fun adventures alone and with family and friends. The memories will last a lifetime.

Now to catch up. A short time ago when my wife started Chemo again, after being off of it for a short time due to illness, I had a heart to heart talk with her oncologist. I was told that my wife had maybe a year left to live. He also said it could be longer or shorter, no guarantees. All others involved in her care confirmed the news. I knew she was going downhill, but it is hard to hear that news from a doctor. Her Doctors and nurses have been awesome throughout the whole process. She doesn't know how long she has and does NOT want to know.

Joan has already given up her job and we are talking life one day at a time. So this year I will devote most of my time and money to help make these last months as fun as possible.

To all my friends in Div. 6 that are part of the stock and super stock contingent, I will try and make a race or 2, if possible. My wife comes first. I am not here as much as I usually was. I will check periodically for comments from you.

God bless all of you and please PRAY for my wife that we can spend as much time as possible enjoying each others company.

I don't know you from Adam other than your posts on this site. I'm very sorry for your situation, and I don't mean too be to forward in a public forum, but please get Tommy Johnson's cancer book. He was dead man walking with a diagnosis of literally a month or two 15 years ago, maybe more. Its a bunch of non western medicine supplements that saved his life and many others. Sounds like you don't have many cards to play, so I'd really recommend giving it a read and a try. Just google it. And again, I apologize if I'm sticking my nose in your business when I don't know you.

Thoughts and prayers are all well and fine but do not change the outcome of a situation where our health is at risk. As Dan said neither him or I know you personally but It would be imperative to take his suggestion and do anything that might prolong your sharing your life with your wife. I had friends who were told that nothing could be done for them only to resort to alternative means after researching them. I wish you all the best no matter what you decide. Yogi Berra said it best "It's not over till It's over. Go out there and prove your doctors wrong for your wife's sake and yours.

Thoughts and prayers are with you Ron. I walked the same path with my Mom & Dad. Mom starting in 2008 ending Aug 10, 2010 Dad 2009 and ending in Oct 20 2015. I am still not finished with the mess it leaves your personal life in.. Still no racing... It is not an easy path and when it comes to an end you will look back with no regrets and many outstanding memories. Good luck to you and may God's strength be with you on your journeys.

Thanks to all who have responded so far. I have, very much, appreciated every thought, prayer and idea. We had a few family and friends stop by each day of this weekend. Some have brought food for us and given hugs and kisses to Joan (a couple for me also).

We have been dealing with this cancer issue for over 14 years. Have been through many highs and some lows. Very thankful for each day and am hoping and praying for many more.

I have personally lost 5 good friends to Cancer in the last few years. Others have had it and beat it.

Prayers sent.

We believe in the power of Prayer with all our heart!

I was diagnosed with Kidney Cancer some years ago.

The doctors were very discouraging about doing a 12 Hour
procedure on a patient with my health issues. They said I
would die on the table and that would be it.

Well here I stand today ...... with no recurrence of the Cancer for
over 5 years (Which is the critical period). In our house we believe
God is the Greatest Physician and nothing is impossible for Him.
After this life........there is a beautiful afterlife for those
who love and follow him.

I pray the Holy Spirit will be with you and comfort you on your difficult
journey!

Re: Carguy49's Road Trip - Final Chapter

Sorry it has been so long since my last post. Joan is in the hospital at the moment for a tune up. Some minor issues need to be addressed to help her move better. The doctors are saying 3 to 5 days, so a nice break for me and the best of care for her. With her getting 24/7 care I can rest a little better.

Please continue to pray for us. We are both doing well mentally and that is VERY important. Thanks again for all the prayers and well wishes so far and keep them coming.

God has blessed us both greatly in the past few days and will continue to comfort and bless us and our loyal friends and family.

On a really cool note, we became great grandparents last Monday. A little boy 8lbs. and 13 ounces. Sorry I don't remember his name. I will have to ask the wife today, she remembers all that kind of stuff. Also, we have another one on the way in May.

Happy Easter to you all. It is because of Him we all have strength.

You certainly have your priorities right, God bless you both.

Take care of yourself. As you probably know this can be as hard on the caregiver and it is on the sick loved one. Get help when you need it!

Re: Carguy49's Road Trip - Final Chapter

Thanks again for all the prayers , well wishes and private messages.

Everything is moving smoothly as of yesterday. The process is moving slowly, but in the right direction. The biggest problem is fluid/swelling on her legs but even that is going down.

Joan will be in the hospital longer than first thought, but that is a good thing. Joan is getting AWESOME care and responding VERY WELL to all medications. Occupational and Physical therapists have both been to see her and Joan is working well with them to help her move better.

I pray every day for peace, comfort and strength for her and it is working well. Please continue to pray because IT IS helping both of us.

Hang in Ron, the prayer chain reaches across the country. Understand the context of your thread title but of course you know life's road trip continues forever and thanks to Christ there is no final chapter,

Rest up as best you can and may your wife's medical care continue to bring relief.

Re: Carguy49's Road Trip - Final Chapter

Jim, the title of the thread is about our journey on Earth.

In mentioning Joan's swelling in her legs I forgot to add about the swelling in her abdomen. The doctor's went in and pulled 3.5 liters of fluid from her yesterday and Joan was feeling much better when I left last evening.

I will continue to update every few days or so. Thank you for all the prayers and messages. The best news will be when Joan can come home. Should be in a few days, will know more later today.

Re: Carguy49's Road Trip - Final Chapter

Thanks again for all the prayers, positive thoughts and private messages. These are what help keep us going. The power of prayer is great.

Joan's stay in the hospital has been extended a few more days to help her get as much physical strength back as possible. The doctors like where all the numbers are now, but both them and Joan want her to have more upper body strength to help her move better.

A couple of days ago a nurse asked Joan how she was feeling and she said I am laying her movin' and groovin'. We all laughed and realized that she was feeling pretty good. Joan is able to walk around her room, with a walker, pretty darn good. It is fun to see her do that.

I sleep well at night knowing that Joan is getting very good care and is in the prayers of so many people. THANK YOU ALL.

Re: Carguy49's Road Trip - Final Chapter

We have a slight change of plans for Joan's progress.

Got her moved to a skilled care facility Friday afternoon. It is a very good place for her to be. They have already evaluated her by both PT and OT as to her ability to move. Tomorrow Joan will begin sessions each day to help with physical strength, she already shows some inprovement. Estimated time of her stay at the facility is 2 weeks, longer, if needed. At that time Joan will come home (YEAH) and continue therapy 3 days a week until they have brought her as far as they can.

She announced yesterday her inspiration for plowing through this deal. We have a friend that broke his neck 2 years ago and is getting around quite well these days. He spent almost 2 months in Physical Therapy and Joan said if he can do it so can I. Very determined young lady, my wife - all 65 years of her.

Joan is visited by family and friends each day and loves the attention. I was told that I could spend the night in her room where she is now. I told Joan to move over in bed and make room for me ---- She said "I don't think so, this bed is for me." Gota love the humor in that statement.

I can only say to ALL for the thoughts, prayers and private messages - Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.

Re: Carguy49's Road Trip - Final Chapter

Well here we are 6 days later and things have gone downhill rather quickly. The cancer has spread and Joan is spending most of the time resting/sleeping. She is very comfortable and in minimal pain.

Therapy has ended and comfort care was begun on Wednesday because Joan was not progressing physically. Joan can stay right where she is and Joan is very O.K. with that.

The family had a meeting with Joan (wanted by her) last evening and we had a very good time, considering the situation.

Joan understands her situation and is at peace. She knows that she will soon be with God and is ready.

Joan has received wonderful care and loves and appreciates all the prayers for her. Thanks to all for everything and God Bless You ALL.

Re: Carguy49's Road Trip - Final Chapter

This afternoon with several family and friends (about 15 people) in the room I led us all in prayer. I have had a total change of heart. With God's help I believe that we can still beat this thing.

Don't know for sure where this came from (hint: GOD), but we believe with all the prayers that are being said we WILL BE winners.

I won't divulge the whole thing. I asked God for little and He will get A LOT in return.

Re: Carguy49's Road Trip - Final Chapter

Well our plan did not work as we hoped. Joan passed away this afternoon surrounded by family and friends. I am very numb while writing this. My youngest daughter and oldest grandson and his wife just left so I can get some sleep.

Thank you all so much for all that you have done. Joan is at peace now.
