'65 Belvedere in SS/AA?

Checking out the quals at Jeg's Sportsnats the weekend, and noticed this: # 6 Jason Shumate, Memphis, Ind., ’65 Belvedere, 8.750, 0.950.
Hmm, that's pretty sporty, so I looked him up, he runs in SS/AA?Qualifies good at lot of races, Best appearing car awards, He's the real deal, but what am I missing about the Belvedere in AA?

Re: '65 Belvedere in SS/AA?

Natural B car, allowed to add or remove weight to move up or down one class. So it can run A, B, or C.

I did not know that! I just always thought '65 was a "B" car period. So can '68 "A" Cuda or Dart add weight to run "B"? Not sure what HP factor is now, does he weigh same as the '68's to run in "A"?

No, the '68 cars cannot move. They are AH only, except for the cars running GT. I think NHRA added HP to the GT combo though to discourage that. As far as the weight, a little less actually. The '65 can run at 3170 in A, where I believe the AH cars are 3200 minimum.

Re: '65 Belvedere in SS/AA?

That is interesting. IIRC, we used to weigh 3260 in IHRA trim about a hundred years ago. So he's basically getting almost a 100lb break and giving up some aero with the same engine pkg? Speaking for myself, I'd like to see some B cars in the Hemi Challenge, would be a change from all Cudas and Darts. The purists would hate that, though! :D

Am I missing some nuance in the rules? The car runs AA so would it not have to be a natural A car?

Thanks,
Bill

SS/AA reads as Super Stock/ A Automatic. There is no double A class in Super Stock. You are thinking of Stock classes.

Don't feel bad, I've had all my coffee allotment for the day and I'm still a little confused........So, he's running a natural B car in SS/AH not AA? So, in theory, he would be eligible for Hemi Challenge unless there is a rule allowing only '68s?

Terry,
As you can see the SS/AH cars are all 68 Darts and Barracudas.

The car at Bowling Green that we are talking about was running SS/AA. As a side note a very cool car.

Re: '65 Belvedere in SS/AA?

AH was created for the '68 Hemi Darts and Barracudas.

The '64 and '65 cars would make for some good entertainment in the Hemi Challenge though. Jerry Epperson, and Joe Aluise both tried it a number of years back before NHRA created "AH". I think Tony DePillo may have as well with his '64 car.

There is no doubt Tony could have went a round or two last year at Indy in the Hemi Challenge with as well as his '64 car was running at that race.

Absolutely gorgeous!! Has anyone done a feature article on it? I mean, its a B car running In A, he's qualifying well and there's prob some history behind the car that is not well known. If that's not interesting enough for a feature, somebody might as well close shop!

Re: '65 Belvedere in SS/AA?

I still thought that there was a limit on the amount of weight that could be removed to move up a class, shows how up to date I am.
I knew the 1964 cars with aluminum heads used to get to run A.
I'd like to know more about that car also. If it can get 400 lbs under shipping weight to SS/A minimum, that's a pretty trick car.

340Cuda 05-31-2018 02:13 PM

Re: '65 Belvedere in SS/AA?

I know when these cars were new they were delivered quite a bit under the shipping weight that had been given to NHRA.

I was at the 1965 Springnationals and I am pretty sure both the winner and runner up in class got tossed for illegal ballast.

So my guess is its a lot easier to go up a class with these cars than to go down a class.

Shumate's car has a Holt chassis, who built the strong engine and applied the beautiful paint scheme?
