Winch
What winch do you guys think is the best for a 24' 28' enclosed trailer to load a 3500 to 3700 lbs stocker thanks

Re: Winch
I uses a Super WinchX3F. this is a winch that is about 20 years old and still going. I would buy one again if I need one. can buy then through JEGS or Summitt

Re: Winch
I've been using a 2500lb ATV winch for years now. I plan on upgrading to the Harbor Freight 5,000lb with a remote control.

Re: Winch
I use an ATV winch, too. I have a tilt trailer so I needed to keep the weight down. My Superwinch LT4000 only weighs 24 lbs. and mounts on the trailer bed without upsetting the balance. It has just enough torque to pull my 3200 lb. Mustang up the slope of the bed. I added a bunch of wire to the remote to make it long enough to walk the car all the way to the trailer. 16 feet from the winch to the rear deck and the remote is only 12 feet. I'm going to get a snatch block to increase the pull of the winch so I can load in the drive this season. It's an uphill slope.

Re: Winch
I have used a Harbor Freight 2500# to load 3200 lb Jeep - works but marginal. I suggest a 3500# unit - bought on Amazon for $89. Harbor Freight has coupons and most of the winches have remotes now.

Re: Winch
I also use a Super Winch.
My car weights 3500 lbs, approx . After I bought it I bought a Super Winch remote. The remote cost as much(all most) as the winch did; they DID say it floats, imagine that!!! The only issue if have had with winches is getting them to spool properly. If there is a secret, I haven't found it! Terry K |
Re: Winch
We have a 4500# Superwinch and they are hard to beat.
https://racetoolsdirect.com/product/...ller-fairlead/ Pretty affordable to with a great lifetime warranty! I have had trouble with the HF models. |

Re: Winch
The folks who make these winches sure don't load many race cars on trailers, at least not solo. They all have 50 feet of cable but only 10 to 12 foot remotes while we have 16 to 25 foot trailers. That requires a second person to turn the wheel while the car loads. Mine came with two remotes, one handlebar for an ATV and one trigger remote. I rigged them together for a cable around 30 feet long. I could load from in the car if needed. I had the hook come undone once. Watching the car roll towards the side of the house was not fun. I have walked wheel blocks behind the rear wheels since then.
I keep my cable lubed with spray chain oil to reduce the chance of snarling on the spool. |
Re: Winch
You can get wireless winch remote conversions. I have one somewhere that I never used.
I imagine there are new winches that come with a wireless remote. That remote wire is always getting in the way and/or tangled. Usually when it's dark and/or raining. I'd "overbuy" when it comes to capacity. If that thing let's go with no driver... |

superwinch remotes are considerably more than 70 bucks....wish I would have known that before I bought a superwinch |
Re: Winch
Superwinch S5500 and a wireless remote. My current winch has the synthetic rope and I am glad I went that route.

Re: Winch
Superwinch S4000 for me with plug in remote....No Harbor Freight junk allowed in my trailer...

Re: Winch
Bought one of these during Holley Days for my new trailer. $199.00 free shipping then. I wanted a poly rope and wireless remote. I saw the link to the sale on Bang Shift as a new item for Holley. I have no report on it as I have not opened the box. I am sure it is lesser quality than a Superwinch? https://www.holley.com/products/off-.../parts/4510AOR

Re: Winch
Hi Rory,
I would not go back to cable, or a wired controller. The rope being more pliable than cable does not bunch up on one end of the spool. With the synthetic rope it has about a 5-10 ft outer sheath to protect the rope. The sheath is just loose over the rope, so you can place it wherever. I keep it close to the hook and place a rug down over the rear door opening. This keeps the rope from rubbing on the trailer floor and rear door when getting the car in or out of the trailer. The wireless controller is merely an external relay box that plugs into the wired remote. The relay box has a manual toggle switch and power switch. You can manually operate the winch with the toggle, or use the remote FOB. The system also has a wired antennae, to the relay box. I have the relay box mounted at the front of the trailer above my cabinet counter top, and the antennae mounted on the ceiling. The system does not have a range greater than 40 ft but works well while in range. You could install the relay box wherever you want by extending the cable that plugs into the wired remote. As to the rope being pulled across the roller at a 90 deg angle, the sheath would protect it if long enough. They make a nylon or aluminum plate for the fairlead as well. Sean |

Note to tilt users: In reading up on mounting winches on tilt trailers I came across an interesting work around for the weight that needs to be offset when it's mounted on the deck. Found it on Ford460 "My buddy has a similar setup, and I'll try to explain the best I can. The winch is mounted to the front A frame just behind the jack. The cable feeds under the immoveable front portion of the deck. From there it goes to a pulley mounted underneath the tilt section, very near to the pivot point. At that pulley the cable turns around towards the front of the trailer. There is another pulley on the front of the tilting section. The cable now goes around that pulley and up onto the deck, where you would use it to drag stuff. The pulley's have tabs that keep the cable from coming off, and it runs in a channel from the winch to the first pulley. It sounds more complicated than it is, and it works great. Hope that helped." |
Re: Winch
Mounting the winch under the floor would be nice. What type of pulley did they use? Is it just a roller? I would think a pulley mounted close to the winch wouldn't allow the cable to go back and forth on the drum as it winds up.
As far as driving the car while winching. I pull my car onto the tailgate and then hook the winch up. I don't have a remote and because of the ATV winch I use it's just mounted to the D ring on the floor with a clevis. I just stay by the winch and pull it in, never had to steer it. I would like to permanently mount a winch along the wall and use a pulley on the D ring. I don't know how that would work out with a synthetic rope instead of a cable. |
Re: Winch
I have my winch on top of the floor, behind a lower door under the bench.
Only use it to load the car, if it is not drivable. |

The first snatch block probably bolted to the frame member closest to the pivot point. The second could be bolted to a bracket at the head of the bed low and welded to the rails. A slot would need to be cut in the deck for the cable to come up, but not too big or long. As for the cable following the winch drum, there would be around 8 feet or more to pulley one so it should track OK. Here's a snatch block. |
