Demolishing Englishtown

Anyone see these pictures on facebook? What a shame that this is what it came to.. This is crushing to the racing community in the northeast. Obviously the track closing was heartbreaking enough, but to see this makes it worse.

Made my first pass there in 1968 as a Junior from Highland Park HS... breaks my heart to see this. I'm betting after how they struggled in the early days to make E-Town great, Richie and Vinny are absolutely cursing down upon this sight!

Very sad. I took my first pass down E-Town in 1978. I also heard the motocross track was bulldozed as well.

From what I've been hearing, they are tearing everything down. Probably Making room for housing developments. Awful..I hope they enjoy the money they got for selling out. If you want to read up on how others feel about it, check out the comments on that Facebook page... pretty entertaining.

Saw my first race in 1964, I was all of 14 years old, nothing but way cool AFX cars. We campaigned a D/MP 1969 Camaro in the cups division in the mid 70's. I wish I had a nickel for every Sunday I was at Englishtown. Very fond memories

Well its their property and they can do what ever they want to with it.

However its still sad.

I had heard that NHRA had sued them for breach of contract. Anyone know how that turned out?

Whatever came about Don Schumacher having interest on buying the place?

I ran there in 1967 on a fairly regular basis. I will always have good memories of E-town.

Because of the land values in that area, there is not much chance that anyone could afford to buy the property and run it as a race track.

They still have the motocross track on their schedule, as well as the spring auto show and swap meet in April.

Have two SS class win trophies from there, 1972 and 73. Great memories. What track is next?

Don't be surprised when you see the track surface being razed. There's a new law in the works to tax properties that are paved having to do with runoff from their properties into the creeks, streams, lakes, just about any waterway. grassy areas would absorb the runoff. There was a lot going with the decision to close the drag strip portion of the property, my feeling a lot of it was self inflicted. But it is what it is.

Re: Demolishing Englishtown

If you look around at the dragstrips nowadays,The only ones showing any new improvements are either part of a racing complex, Vegas, charlotte or owned by a Business owner who is racer/car owner Galot, Virginia motorsports park, Atco, cecil county.

Only track owner I can come up with who has done major improvements is OZZY MOYA who owns SGMP, runs orlando and upgraded the track near Panama city. He sold his business to run tracks from what I understand.

My Point. Support any dragstrip you can. I try to go to local tracks at least twice a year to watch (even test and tune) and Buy a Burger and a Beer.

Re: Demolishing Englishtown

Only the Jersey Barriers are being removed, not the track surface.

Old Motocross track was moved a year ago to where the practice track was and made much larger to hold National Event type races.

The new "Rain Tax" is certainly an interesting dilemma for places like this that have a huge amount of paved acreage. E-Town has their own lake for water run-off, but what about shopping malls? Damn, we have a TON of them in this state!

Still, this should show that the rumors of the track being re-opened for Drag Racing were just that, rumors.........

That makes sense. They have a concert / beer festival coming up in the summer and the barriers would not be good for that.

Where's everybody going to take cover at the first concert shootout?

One of my favorite tracks, sad to see this.
But the state of NJ and home owners have been on them since the 1970's.
They won't be the last I'm sure 😥

It's a band called Rancid. Doesn't sound acoustic to me. I hope the neighbors enjoy it.

Anyone who buys a house near a race track and then complains about the noise is just as stupid as someone who buys a house near an airport and then complains about the noise!

Very well said, Bill! It's a shame what they say about common sense not being so common. Or the ill-fated Larry Morgan t-shirts - "You can't fix stupid!"

Some of my most vivid memories originated from Etown, may it rest in historic drag racing peace.
Thank you to the Napp family and all my racing brothers who made it so special to me.
