BB Chev HP
Any suggestions on baseline HP needed in A or B/SA?
|
Re: BB Chev HP
I would guess 625 to 650 for 427.....But I am a Mopar
racer. It would depend on whose Dyno too. |
Re: BB Chev HP
Of course every dyno can be wildly different, so it's hard to say very accurately. But my general rule of thumb is that if you can make 1.45 horsepower per NHRA HP Factor, you'll run decent. I would guess the guys at the top of their classes are roughly 1.6+ hp/Factor.
So an example would be a 375hp aluminum headed 396" Big Block rated at 405hp by NHRA with an auto transmission should be: 1.45 x 405 = 587hp. Start getting over that and you'll be more and more competitive.Bad boys are probably in the 645hp range. |
Re: BB Chev HP
I'm running the 402" 70 Nova with Alum Heads HP Per NHRA is 415 which puts me at 601.75 HP. I have some work to do.

a decently preparedRe: BB Chev HP
I was talking about 427 engine. I was thinking 425/435 Combo.
On our stuff I usually figure about 1.5 x Rated to go 1 under on decently prepared stocker. Our Superstocker take at least 2 x Facter for 1 under pass! My .02 Your Mileage may vary |
Re: BB Chev HP
The only big reference point I have seen someone post was a dyno sheet from Steve Wann's 413" motor in 2018. It made 674hp with a 405hp factor. That's a HUGE 1.66hp/factor - but that's also why he has one of (if not THE) fastest A/SA in the country.

So the 64 thousand dollar question is: Picking a builder...…….

Re: BB Chev HP
Steve is a very formidable foe and drives real well. He is always fun to race. His daytime job is making power, his hobby is making lots of power.
Scott Gove and John Gray run real well, maybe they can shed some light. Jimmy D runs well when pushed. |

I thought by now one of the fast 396 cars would have hit the 1.20 trigger. I believe it will only be a matter of time. To many of them and again there are a lot of fast A an B cars. I was hoping that John or Scott would play in A or B for a while. The AA has a tough index. How fast do you think the 2015 COPO's. I was hoping to find out at the baby Gators Barry |

Re: BB Chev HP
Would I be off base if I believe the best 1969 396/375 Camaros that run aluminum heads and are able to run better than -1.20 (and they can) are making north of 700 HP?
Do the math. |

Re: BB Chev HP
There is only one Steve Wann.
I remember him wandering about the pits when he probably was around 13 telling everyone how he was kick our butts. AND sure enough for the last 30 +years.....He certainly has done that!! |

HP factor; 405 with aluminum heads
8.5 lbs in B/SA = 3,442.5 + 170 = 3,612.50 11.25 index - 1.4 = 9.85 The Elapsed Time (ET) Method This method uses the vehicle weight and the elapsed time (ET) to finish a quarter mile (402.3 meters) on the formula of Horsepower = Weight (ET/5.825)3. 747 horsepower. |

Maybe Scott Gove might. |
Re: BB Chev HP
my combo for A is 3490 lbs, for B 3698 lbs. I would need enough hp for A and they are 9.8 - 9.90 ?
Am I figuring the class wrong? 402" with Alum Heads and Auto.....8.23 lbs per? |

While vehicle aerodynamics can cause this number to go up or down I think a good middle ground is 710 HP. With track weather BP=29.92 VP=0 Temp=60 Stan |

Frank I'm sure it depends on what round your in and what race your at. Several people have done it on red lights and in qualifying. I think it's nuts but it's their car and money. BP

Re: BB Chev HP
This is a factor from a B/SA 396 Camaro some years ago.
That one is Fast. 6.14/108.84 9.781/132.58 = 1297 Wonder of the RPM ;-) |
