Re: Lakeland Drag Strip Open
Jeremy;
Who is operating the track and promoting the races there now? I would assume that Roy Spiker still owns the property. I know a couple of years ago he had a man running it for him (I believe his name was Randy) and was just sitting on the property until an interested buyer came along. After Randy (again, I think that was his name) gave up on running the place, Roy supposedly got Gene Germany (former S/ST and H/R racer) to run it for him, but I guess that didn't last too long. Sean's concern about tech and safety are legit. I think most everyone in Fla. has heard some type of horor story about the place in the last few years. I know I have, but with the right operator running the place it may be something to attract the interest of the racers from Fla. that post on this site. Joe Pinkston 2155 S/ST |
Re: Lakeland Drag Strip Open
And Jeremy...Speaking of Reynolds, Ga. last week, I sure enjoyed meeting some old friends that I have not seen in almost 30 years. Jim Walbel looks a little grayer now but seemed in good health and spirits. It was nice to meet Woodro Josey as well. Next year I plan on making several division 2 points meets. It sure was alot of fun. I hope the Lakeland track keeps on making progress so everyone can be pleased. Tell dad high for me.

Re: Lakeland Drag Strip Open
Sean I do belive I am going to west palm,
Roy spiker is the one in charge he has a guy by the name of marco lopez as track manager, and I am out there to help them turn this track into a great place to run, as for tech they are going to start looking at safty alot more, I am trying to help them in the right direction to make this a very safe place to race, For all to race and keep this historic place open for people for a long time, We are going to start a High school challenge night and let them race for their school. Nothing is ever going to change if as racer's we dont give them as much suport as we can. I will bring up the concern's to them about proper driving clothing. So if you guy's would pass it on that it's open and give us a try and make up your own mind's I think you will be very pleased, like sean said his dad raced there, my dad and my son have raced there thats real neat to be able to race in the tracks of some of the greats. and some of the tracks of tommorow, So I will post times and schedules on here for everyone to know. Mr. Duzac, it was a great pleasure meeting you and looking at your great car, and to hear about dad and his history is always very cool. Reggie -
I am sorry I have not got back to you sooner. Check out Lakelandmotorsportspark.com for the information that you are looking for. We are really very excited. My wife is doing a lot of the PR there at the track now, so we are interacting with the drivers a lot more and making sure that all of you are happy. The PA system was working great as of Thursday so I think that it will be a great change for you. Also, if we run after dark you are actually going to be able to see!!! The lights are working as well!!! There have been ALOT of changes so I look forward to seeing you. I am not sure that I will be there Saturday, but I will be there on Sunday. They are having an import and motorcycle event. I am super excited about the direction that the track is taking. We are also starting a High School Challenge in January. Also if you know of any one that has a business that would like to have a sign placed on the barrier wall, please let me know or give them my contact info. Re: Lakeland Drag Strip Open
Well, the first events are over, and WOW is all I can say. We have roughly 3000 people through the track in 2 days!! We are looking to have a lot more people there soon. How exciting!!!
We will be doing a lot of new things there and any one that has any ideas are more than welcome to voice them. Come on out V-8 cars, we will see you on Thurs night for Test and Tune, and then on Saturday for the bracket race. Jeremy Waibel Waibel Competition |
Re: Lakeland Drag Strip Open
Dont be so negative until you go and try it for yourself. Tracks are closing all over the country and I know of two that are on their death bed as I type this. Support your local track one day it may not be there and if they spent that kind of money to reopen it at least give them a shot before you bash them

Re: Lakeland Drag Strip Open
Absolutly !!! The more the merrier!!!
Remember we are an "outlaw" track....lol Yes we will be allowing anyone that falls into those categories, even those local guys who do not necessarily fall into NHRA or IHRA categories. Waibel Competition |
Re: Lakeland Drag Strip Open
Jeremy, I'm Mike with the rear engine funny car and fuel altered, do they prep the track any better for Sat than on Thurs (for TNT)?? We were there Nov 8, there was NO traction. I love that place and call it my home track, we just landed new sponsor (Michael Holley Chervrolet) and want to impress at our home track, rolling our car on practice night would NOT do it (yes, that was me, nearly turning it over). We are switching to the funny car body from the altered, and will be back out in December, trying to pick a night to invite all the guys from work (big bosses) but we need traction, saw guys in the 4's on previous Sat, so I'm guessing they VHT'd the track that night, is Thurs just a bad idea for high powered cars ?? Nobody I talked to on thurs was getting down there, and some packed up early, I tried throttle stops (for the first time ever) and made a second run, still skated around, but not as bad as that first run.

CONGRATS on the new sponsor !!! That is AWESOME!!! As far as the track goes, please let me know when you are going out there and I will make sure that we go an extra mile for you. I want to set up a time to talk to you about somethings that are happening for the track, and I think that it would be great for your sponsor. We picked up a new sponsor as well... LMP!!! So when all this hospital stuff is over, I will get with you about setting up a time to talk. Jeremy Waibel |
Re: Lakeland Drag Strip Open
Awesome Jeremy, I'm part of the "Southern Classic Funny Cars" group now, we run on a 4.90 index and do match races in the southeast USA, would like to get my funny car buddies to come and race there, and was very disappointed by the lack of track prep, don't get me wrong I love that track and want to support it (I live 3 miles up the road) moved my whole team here just to race there, we are finally getting the Vette body on it (at our sponsors request) should be back out in December, will call you, and give heads up, when its a little closer. In the mean time you get better, our track needs you, thanks Mike---- P.S. congrats on YOUR new sponsor as well !! http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/f...r/DSCN1915.jpg

I will let you know if it helps any, that at the Import event that we just held we had 2 cars that were in the Pro/Super Pro class, and they were dialing and running aroun 4.87 and the track held... I would love to get things set up to where we can have an event that would feature you guys in conjunction with some others. How many people are you talking about that would be at an event?? How do you all run your program? Do you lease the track, or do you come in like a regular event run by the track ? Jeremy Waibel |
Re: Lakeland Drag Strip Open
Hey Jeremy, I saw cars in the 4's on Nov 3 (I was at hooters cup, watching drags with binoculars during caution flags) looked like they were getting down there pretty good, so we made plans to come on thurs. Here is the video of that run: http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/f..._near_miss.jpg

Re: Lakeland Drag Strip Open
Wow... that is pretty impressive...
I guess the best thing I can say is that I will look into that when I get out of the hospital, BUT thank god that we decided that the track needed to be 3 ft wider on each side... just think the white line was the OLD WALL!!!! Could have been a lot worse. Good driving!!!! We will get to the bottom of that. No worries buddy!!! Jeremy Waibel |
