I've often wondered why M&H doesn't continue to make a competitive stocker or SS tire? I see they are still in the business. What is their specialty in today's market?

In the mid to late '60's......Champion spark plugs gave out free spark plugs at most events. D&A Speed Sport Oil at Indy, free cases of oil......STP....T--shirts and product by the box full.....Hurst....Shifty Doctor....fix your Hurst shifter or give you the parts. Duffy's....Helped a lot of guys with parts.....Dick Moroso....just a great guy who liked to have fun. Local speedshop's (Van Iderstein's around here) helped a lot of us as well with discounted parts...There were plenty of events with free stuff and free food sponsored by local distributers for co's like CocaCola.....Local tracks and Division races gave free entry to Nat'l Record Holders a lot of times.

All the way up to the mid eighties, you could go to the midway and get gaskets from Mr. Gasket, oil from Quaker State, Pennzoil,or Valvolene, a jet from Holley, a chip from MSD, get a tranny rebuild from Stanley at TCI, most everything was free and now most don't carry the product with them.

At the '79 Summernationals in Englishtown, Jim Beatty from ATI rebuilt my A-1 powerglide for zip! I also remember getting free oil from Kendall. NGK was just starting out in the US and they gave out plugs at most events. I got plenty of cans of CRC and Gumout too.

Re: TOP 10 Sportsman Sponsors of the 60s

Many really supportive trailers were at all national events for years. Problem seems that most of us got the parts to last for YEARS and didnt rebuy. Especially at the events. Then the warehouses undersold even the trucks at the meets. Wonder if the advertising that parts for ALL customers were for sale at National events could have made the inventory worth bringing again? Would bracket racers attending the events just stop by and pick up their MSD or Holley or Mr. Gasket? Moroso is still very well stocked and seems to sell often. Maybe they have gotten a following that others haven't cultivated.
Richmond Gear was a very active trailer at Nationals.

Re: TOP 10 Sportsman Sponsors of the 60s

When we started building a SS car in 1971 Ernie Johnson of Valvoline and Price Petrie of SW gave my partner and me oil, trans fluid and guages before the car was completed. They had my business for years to come. Also as Herb jr said Mopar was a great help to many. If you had a Mopar and ran well and had a couple connections, Mother Mopar would take care of you.
Problem with trailers at events is legally you have to have a business license in that state, city, county or whatever to do business at some if not all locations. Also if you have a business that sells mail order and you go to a race in, say, South Carolina and sell out of the trailer you now have a retail presence in SC so anyone from SC who buys from your out of state mail order business that year is required to pay sales tax. My part time employer/sponsor used to do a lot of IHRA events and sales but the logistics and paperwork for 4 trailers and several companies represented by them got to be too much. Not to mention sales tax liabilities on future sales.
