Av gas
Is aviation fuel ok to fire up a drag motor.never used it before,I usually get fuel in Buffalo area but border closed ,#%&# china virus

Re: Av gas
I would think it would be, back when I started racing in 1989 that's all we used but that's probably because we didn't know any better 😂

Re: Av gas
For starting and basic running its ok. Stock car racers love it but it just builds to much heat and bad for lubrication. You can add marvel mystery oil for lubing

Re: Av gas
I wouldnt leave it in the fuel system too long. Run it all out or drain it when your done...

Re: Av gas
Nothing wrong with running 100 LL Avgas. I got friends of mine running it in 15.1 race engines and using a 350 shot for finish line games no problem. The racer that won the Million a few years ago Johnny Bracket Racer runs it in his SR 20 615 and he has lots of racers that run it down their in the deep south. It will last way longer than race gas before it goes bad.

Re: Av gas
I put some in my '71 Duster bracket beater last fall as I needed some fuel to move it around at home...left it in all winter with zero issues. Topped off the tank with some fresh Sunoco and the car went 11.55, 11.54, 11.55, 11.56 first time out. Motor is around 11.5-12:1.

Re: Av gas
I used to use it locally in a 9 to 1 400 Pontiac. Couldn't tell the difference from C-12.
Oh yeah, I could...The price! Up until a few years ago, you could pass off Avgas as one of the approved fuels. Once that was discovered , they killed that one in a hurry. |
Re: Av gas
My brother has an aircraft restoration business. He uses 110LL in every thing that requires high octane gas, his hot rods, boats, golf cart, off road stuff. In 5 gallons he mixes 1/2 cup Lucas fuel injection cleaner/conditioner and 1 cup toluene. I’ve used this formula for years in my street Fairlane as Weber IDF carbs won’t tolerate ethanol. Lasts a long time in the car, no side effects.
I buy it at a local Airport that has a self serve pump. Kelly |
Re: Av gas
Thank you all,for input ,gona try it,

Re: Av gas
A long time ago, while on active duty, we all ran 115/145 Purple AV Gas in everything we drove. The price was right. It was the best smelling fuel that I have ever used. Up on the wing filling tanks, that fuel was so volatile it cast a shadow across the wing...

Re: Av gas
Does any one want to tell what the dual rating on AV gas is about? like 115/145 ??
Choices: A. Heat value B. Resistance to engine icing C. Octane D. Volatility rating |
Re: Av gas
Wow, weren't you lucky to get to use that stuff.I got to use 100LL for years,in Florida but if you try to by it where i now am, you get treated like a crimminal. Now, I love all of the stuff I buy from VP. but I will notice little bits of trash in the screen of the funnels I use, the funnels are the ones alcohol guys use with a very fine mesh screen in it. One is for my car, and the other for my small engines. This is with 110 or SEF. Just wonderin'. John Kissel K242

I thought the high number was heat value, but I cheated and went to google |
Re: Av gas
When I use to do a lot of street racing back in the day I would buy AV gas from the local airport.(Told them I was using it at the dragstrip). They told me it was 105 octane. I would then mix Super 104 +" Real Lead" with it to up the power a little more.
Adding one quart of "Real Lead" additive in 20 gallons of AV gas would take it up another 5-7 numbers. Seriously, 1 gram of metallic lead per gallon of gas equals a level of protection no substitute can match....Not to mention it stops knocks, pings, run-on, overheating and piston damage caused by fuel that's too low in octane. |
Re: Av gas
115/145 was 115 octane lean & 145 Auto Rich or Military Power...
We also had a a J-34 jet engine under each wing that used 115/145 for fuel and part of our pre-flight was to reach inside the tailpipe to break of the stalactites of lead from the fuel. Flew in P-2V Neptunes .......2 turning & 2 burning |

I didn't, but I'm familiar with them. We have one on display at an aviation museum that I'm involved with, and the Royal Canadian Air Force also flew them for a few years. |
Re: Av gas
We have some winners...Basic.. rich lean octane..
The only thing that hasn't been mentioned is the chemical enhancement that AV gas has to help keep Carb ice from forming. It doesn't cool like racing gas when it evaporates/vaporizes. So it puts some heat in the induction system that race gas doesn't. Personal Experience: My 172 with the 300 Continental "6" engine runs better on a 50/50 mix of 100LL Av Gas and non ethanol 87 octane pump gas. Simply because the engine was designed for 85 octane gas. I have an STC to fly with automotive gas, but the mix is better. BTY: Jeff and Bob I have an old friend that has been working for a company leasing planes to the Govt. for fire suppression. He started off flying a modified Neptune and moved up to a DC-10. Somewhere I have a video of him in the Neptune making a run on a ridge that was on fire... Cool stuff. |

I know they were put on Connies that made 3350hp... |

They had 3 PRT's Power Recovery Turbines each rated 150HP that fed the power directly back into the crankshaft using a reduction gear setup. They grouped 6 of the 18 cylinders together so the exhaust of 6 cylinders powered each of the 3 PRT's. We even had an R-3350 with a Chevrolet Bow-Tie build plate. Back then my rating was AD(R) 2 with the R standing for Recips. Punched a lot of holes in a lot of clouds. |

Got something like 3000 hp. Never went past that stage. Most everything they developed in WW2 We are using today. |
