ANY BODY KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT A GUY NAMED JAMES REAGAN FROM EITHER THE NEW YORK OR PITTSBURG AREA???????Got a car for sale on Racing Junk and a guy responded to my ad about a week ago and I just saw the response today so i texted him back--He has a Pittsburg area cell phone but says he is from New York--He wants to send me a cashiers/certified check and I told him when the check clears he can pick the car up plus wants to pay an extra hundred to reserve it---sounds kinda suspicious like the Nigerian check schemes that every so often pop up--any body knows anything please let me know ASAP---Thanks Dick Ullrich FED 387

Always have them send the check. It costs them something to send it. If it looks legit( highly doubt it) then see about cashing it.

Tell him that you'll only accept a check from the bank that you use. I believe that is the safest way to do it.

Have him call you and talk to him in person. If he does call, you can tell real quick if he is a car person,or a scammer.

Be real carefull with the check. Your bank may accept it, and then charge you back after it is found to be bogus. Been there, almost got screwed. Look at the check real close, it may not have the standard endorsement area on the back, or the border on the front may be solid instead of having the bank name in micro print.

It is a total scam Stop. Had a friend loose a $2,000 dollar Snap on tool box like that.

get his proper name and address. If he will not give it too you, there is your answer. If he does Then spend 10 bucks online to do background check.

You can also use Escrow.com. sold a motorhome like that, protects both parties, you can split the fee, but it is safe.

Have him wire the money to your bank. I have done that on both sides of car deals.

Never take a Cashier's Check. They can stop payment up to 6 months later.
I've sold a few cars I only take a wire transfer for deposit and balance in Cash

Told him I need his complete name and address plus I told him NO CHECKS just wire the money to my banks easier and quicker we shall see what transpires--Thanks to all for the advice---Sure sounds like it might be a scam but I have 4 people very interested so it might not be a hoax but I'm not taking any chances---Keep the ideas coming guys--FED 387

Definitely right out of the scammers playbook. They'll also say that they will have a shipper pick up the car. Have the scammer give the cashiers/certified check to the shipper, they can cash it and give you the cash on pickup. Had one of those Bozos do the same thing to me when I was selling the Volare a few months ago. Told him to have his shipper cash the check and bring cash on pickup. Never heard from him again.

These people do the same thing on Craigslist. you list it, the next day there e-mail or text you. tell them cash and never hear from them again.

We had similar situation selling our old Totorhome. I would never give my banking info for a wire to anyone. I set up a new bank account for wires in only, the account did not have checks, it did not allow ACH transactions, it wasn't a ZBA, no ATM/Debit card or wires out. The plan was once the money was wired and in the account, I had my bank tranfer out of that account and closed it down. You have to be very cautious with today's technology and savvy crooks. I never used the account, we sold the Totor to a friend.

Once you get the check, call the bank that it is drawn from and find out if it's good. There are alot of scammers responding to RJ ads. Be vigilant.

I will never post anything on RJ again. I had a few items listed with them earlier in the year and was unindated with texts and queries about the parts, but it was all scammers. Someone has figured out how to phish that site very efficiently. Fortunately the wording used by the scammers make them suspicious from the get-go and they ask for bank information up front so their "financial agent" can transfer the money. All BS. I insisted on PayPal only and that shut them up.

Once you give them your bank account and routing numbers they've probably already got you, so you should never do that.. best advice, if you don't know the person or someone that does do it with cash.. if they're serious and legit they won't have a problem doing that and if they do you should too... ;-)

For a check of anykind you can have your bank send it to federal reserve for collection, then when the funds are credited to your bank and then your account, you are safe. I had somebody text me wed. that i had $2500.00 stimulis money in my account t and to contact him.

When he comes to pick up the car, go to his bank with him and write the check through his bank. Be sure to be with him at the counter when the bank issues the check. The bank cannot collude with him. do not write the check before. It's his bank that must do the check in front of you

Jackie anytime you fill out a personal check and give it as payment, they now have you bank account number and routing Number. It is not a big deal, they can’t do anything with it.

Well as it ends up Mr. REAGAN said he can only pay with a check---Pay Pal /wire transfer/bank transfer /cashiers check/certified check etc. all no good -then he said this
AM that he can only pay with a check I (me) must not i be interested in selling -- from the beginning I thought it was a bogus deal but I let him give me his little speech--- for the future the name and phone number he is using is 412-385-0560 --JAMES REAGEN HE IS FROM NEW YORK---Thanx to all the replied--- Dick Ullrich FED 387

A few years ago I bought a trailer in NC, I live in TX, not wanting to carry that much cash with me across the country, I made a deal with the seller to go to his bank with him and make a wire transfer. Easy deal. Transfer took a few minutes and we were done.

Funny you should mention that. I had pretty much the same thought a couple of hours ago while sitting at a traffic light. I watched a car 99% bust a red light, then remembered that my state has a useless law regarding that.


So then I started to think about where I read about that law. And by doing that, 2020 came into focus.


It hasn't been all THAT long ago that you could trust whatever you read in a newspaper or magazine and didn't have to check 2 or 3 other places to find out if the statement was correct or just bs.


At the time I read it, it wasn't a source like the National Enquirer and it never entered my mind I needed to verify what was written. Sadly, not anymore. Now, it's like the X-Files come to life: trust no one.

OK updates on my situation---the following phone numbers have been sending me TEXT messages to buy the items I have for sale on Racing Junk---ALL APPEAR to be from the same person/persons ALL using the same scam Ill send you a check for over the amount of the purchase "keep the extra for your efforts" and pay the shipper when he gets there ---NOT POSITIVE BUT IF THESE NUMBERS ARE LEGITIMATE BUYERS I APOLOGIZE-

412-385-0560--PITTSBURG--JAMES REAGAN
719-247-6325-- THESE 2 NUMBERS MAKEIT SOUND LIKE A HUSBAND AND WIFE as the 412 msg said i spoke with his wife and he is the husband

205-352-9590--ALABAMA--EVAN--not sure about this one might be an OK buyer he is going to Pay Pal me the money on Saturday but I have no notice from PayPal at this time, and his script is pretty much the same as the others

first 3 numbers same scenario send check, refund part of it to shipper when they shows up "yada yada yada"-- tried calling back and it is answers 'text message subscriber" so I believe that these are definitely scams--- 205 number waiting for PayPal today or if buyer returns my call from this AM

Any thing text only is a scammer. I may use text to make an initial inquiry or question. But if they are serious A conversation should definitely follow.

As for the area ode not matching where they live that is super common now days as every one uses cell phones and if they move they usually keep the same phone number.

You definitely have a list of scammers.

I have not gotten any email from you. While there are a number of references to a web site and email address for me on the web most are for "EROLS" which I have not had for over 2 years.


Also that list I posted is not mine but something I found that was posted by someone else.

the only number that appears on THE list is I believe 813-540-1693--but that 412 number is in cahoots with it---813 makes the initial contact and says they are the wife then later on "the husband" 412 number follows up-- kinda looks like a team effort

They are google numbers. People use their computer to text like its coming from a cell phone.
