On my stickshift cars, I like the Redline Heavy Shockproof gear oil. Use the same or Medium Shockproof in my Jerico and G Force 4 speeds too.

for a stocker whatever is on sale ---just as long as its lightweight---change it out yearly unless you change rear differential--change gears or pull it out to check it --JUST DONT MIX DIFFERENT VISCOSITIES !!!!--FED 387

Jeff,

The Currie Oil is actually rebottled Torco.
Torco Mineral Oil is what Mark Williams recommends.

My experience is to break the gears in with conventional stuff first.

I used Dexron in Doug Nash 4+ 1's for years.

Many of the newer OEM stick shift transmissions require ATF. Seen too many people go to a quick lube type of shop and have the ATF replaced with gear lube and then have problems shifting.

Had a neighbor complain at one time that he had the lube on his stick shift car changed and they had damaged his transmission because it was difficult to shift. Had him show me the invoice and they had put 90W140 gear lube. Asked him for his owner's manual and it showed it required ATF. Told him to go back to the shop and have them replace the oil with ATF. He came back and said the problem was gone. Told him he and the shop were Morons; him for not looking at the manual and the shop for not knowing what they were doing, especially with a kid working at minimum wage.

Gibbs Qualifier oil, drag race applications never get gear lube up to operating temps unless you use a heater so the qualifier oil is the best compromise.

There is a straight 50w gear lube available for HD Truck transmissions like Eaton-Fuller, we used it religiously up north in the oilfields, I've often though it would be a good balance between normal 'thick' gear oil and dexron or engine oil, as I've known a few guys that ran 5w20

With you guys up North, even airliners have to use a different fuel and turbine engine oil! Many vehicles require even a different type of power steering fluid to operate in cold weather.

I have never found any rear end gear lube that performed "better" when doing the late race hot laps and for wear protection then Mobil1, 75W90 full synthetic.
I use the same in my RWD vehicles.
I used to go through at least one gear set every season; now I still run the same 9" ford Pro Gears that I ran 20 years ago.
Ask the rear end set up guys in NASCAR.

just remember, for U guys who are running posi/trac-loks or whatever [any thing besides a spool], do NOT use synthetic lubes. same goes for brass syncro transmissions.

Re: Rear end Gear lube

My 12 Bolts have done great running Torco 85-140 with pro gears, backlash clearance makes a difference with the viscosity lubes you use also. Synthetic is more slippery and somewhat thinner than mineral based lubes, tight clearances can benefit from synthetics.

Mobil 1 Syn Gear Lube 75W-90. Great in manual transmissions as well. Works great in Harley transmissions too. 160k miles going well! Knock wood!

I`m curious as well. I had been told that the main difference between GL-4 and GL-5 gear oils, was that the GL-4 was designed for use in manual transmissions with "yellow metal" syncronizers, like brass/bronze, and the GL-5 was for syncros with paper or carbon fiber linings. It seems that finding GL-4 gear oil is not as easy these days, GL-5 seems far more common. For the Toploader 4 speed in my street car, I have been using GL-4 Brad Penn, seems most of the major oil companies have just GL-5.

I run US Gear, when I asked what they like to see in gear oil, they said GL-5 is the key ingredient drag racing.

Valvoline High Performance gear oil is GL-5

Valvoline regular gear oil is not.

Here's a mention in dragzine confirming they're recommendation. No technical terms though, I couldn't find anything other than this.

I just use $4.97 Valvoline GL-5 80w 90. Ford 9" Strange chunk, I've had several different gear ratios in. 3.90, 4.10, 4.33. 4.56, 5.00, 5.29

Rory,

GL-5 has a higher EP (Extreme Pressure) rating than GL-4 and it offers a higher shock load protection when you have a high angle of gear contact. GL-4 gear oil, no matter the viscosity, has half of the sulfur/phosphorous additive that gives the shock load protection.

Nevertheless, because of the different angle of gear contact and softer contact material, on a manual transmission, this same additive used on the GL-5 gear oil effects the syncros and other soft metal components by fretting the contact surface.

I've got some Ford gear oil F2ZZ-19C547-A which should be GL-4 80W Ford parts oil Ford spec. M2C83-C. I've got 4 or 5 quarts I'd sell.
