79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift

Hey Guys!

Been working on a stocker build for little over a year now. We came across a 78 malibu that we will be converting to a 79 as you'll see through the photos. The goal will be a k/s-l/s stick shift 305 car. My father and I are building the car in the spare time that we have from the super street car. Hope you guys enjoy the journey as much as we do!

Here is how the car looked the day we picked it up. The body overall was in great shape but the car had been picked over pretty well. You will see in the second photo how we had to remove the typical gbody rust on the frame from the rear axle back

Tranny set in place so we could fabricate the cross member. The malibus of this year have awful stock crossmember design.
Also rear end in place. Don't mind the shims behind the antihop bars, we were told the upper control arms were the right ones for the 12 bolt swap. Wrong

Really nice build, you and your Dad do great work.

If you haven't addressed the front brakes yet when Jim Cassels ordered front brakes for his 78 Malibu he found out that there was a difference between 78 spindles and 79 spindles, he bought brakes from Mark Williams for a 79 and ran into a problem, I can't remember what the difference was but just remember there was a problem he had to work thru.

Very cool! That's one way to weld the main hoop, seeing the body was off anyway.

I'm not sure you know this but you need to make a plate or channel deal that goes across where the heater enclosure was. Without it, you can see right down into the engine compartment, and the ghost tech doesn't like that.

HA! Wish we would of posted this earlier. Yeah that was quite the ordeal finding out this car had a spindle from a 78 on one side and a 79 on the other. The outer bearing was much smaller on the 78. We were able to get everything straightened out though.

Marty, we have a GNG super T 10. I know what your thoughts are haha. Gene Bichelmeier is a friend and local, we got it from him for hardly anything. Should get us off the trailer, we'll see about back on...

I thought I saw 7 county plates in one of the pics...now I know I didn't just dream it. Having Gene close by will be a huge help, as I'm sure you already know. There are lots of us within a couple hours of you if you ever need advice, parts, or whatever. Looking forward to seeing the car at the track!

Appreciate it Paul! Yeah my folks live just outside of Madison on Highway 81, where the shop is at. I actually live in Omaha. I'll add a picture of my super street camaro as some of you will probably recognize it.

Oh yeah, I recognize that car! It's funny you're building this particular car because Smiley (Jazynka) has one like it and has been talking about building a stick shift stocker out of it for a few years. It's good to finally get some more class racers from Omaha...this year it will be you, me, Frank Allen SS/E, and Chris Kennedy A/SA. Rumor has it Lehrke might jump in, too!

Just went through the thread. Nice work. The brake booster in the early photos gave me a jolt. Biggest thing I've ever seen, and right in the middle of the engine bay. Glad to see it gone. Currently working on getting manual brakes done right myself at this time.

Love the build. I am a Ford man @ heart but had a 78 Malibu street car for a while.11.50s all day long thru full exhaust but had a T350 trans so the ride was boring. :D
If you're interested, I have an adapter plate for manual brake conversion. It's a template I picked up off Maliburacing.com back in the day.

Just shoot me an address.

Thanks Brian! But that is exactly where we picked up our template. I'll be adding photos shortly that will show the master cylinder conversion better.

As you'll see our interior has a ways to go. We finished the roll bar and found our sweet spot for the seats. We had to make some mounts for the sliderails. We have a new headliner, carpet, and dash waiting to go in just need to get the car sealed good first.

Pretty happy with our rear end turn out for a couple DIY'rs... You'll see our pinion angle and slick clearance in the following photos. Our initial setup is at 2 degrees.

Clutch Linkage setup done for the most part. Need to finalize what headers we want to go with. We believe these are too big for the 305(1-3/4" OD). Then we can work on our linkage going to our throwout bearing fork.
You can also see we started to run brake lines. The line-lock solenoid is mounted.

Re: 79 Malibu- Stocker-Stick Shift

Your starter wire looks like it's on the battery side of the cut off switch. That would leave a hot wire under the hood after the kill switch was thrown.

I'm a little confused here. Looks like two of stuff like fuel and water pump?
Remember that each of those relays has 4 terminals. You need 12 volts in, 12 volts from the switch to trip it, a ground and a wire to provide the power to the accessory.

EDIT Not two pumps, two relays. One looks like it's on the power side and one on the ground.

Yeah i think i have you confused because the symbol for a dc motor and a dc relay coil are the same. I will nomenclature them better to keep everyone from getting them mixed up

You can either have a well organized garage or one where stuff gets done.

I'm interested in following this, so a new diagram would be appreciated. I wire stuff myself and always use too much wire but everything works. I make extensive use of relays.
Is your cut off switch external? If so the only way to kill power to that main distribution block is from the outside. There should be a master cut off within the drivers compartment to shut stuff down on one switch. I've used a push button 100 amp breaker - the big black things - for this. My main power now runs through a high amp continuous duty solenoid. A toggle switch activates it to apply power.
