It's About Time (Not MPH)

Yes, I'm the owner of a 96 Ford Escort, 2dr. 5 speed

It's only been, maybe 5 years?

The car is still in San Diego , in the possession of a racer / friend who handled the deal for me. Many thanks, and I'm not sure you want your name associated with this drivel.

Alex and I will probably do a relay pick up this weekend.

I built a quickie open trailer last month, expressly for this caper. Can't get a VIN and tag till my appointment comes up,...February 9th!

My plan for Phase 1 is to do whatever it needs to get it to run a few tenths under, for our local association races.
Going to get with Billy Nees Race Cars for some header pieces.
I've had the 19.5 Hoosiers for a while..Will find some rims for them.
I'll do whatever it takes to keep the engine from rocking and rolling and trying
to jump out from under the hood when I dump the clutch..Same for the front tires.

Phase 2 might be to pick up another engine and do it right, in case I ever want to go to Indy again. I doubt that would happen but I never say never.

Oh, and for those still awake who think these things aren't really race cars, you may be right . I might not actually be over there in that other lane, so just leave whenever you want ;-)

First thing on rims and tires I see you have 13 tires make sure rims will clear your brakes. Aero makes wider wheel for the dirt cars. Solid mounts for engine and trans can be made by knocking out the centers and make insert from aluminum. Don't forget to look on dirt sites [central hornets is one] we see a few of them racing, for parts. I could hook you up with a guy that knows these cars. I would also call delta cams about a regrind quick turn around. Check out there facebook page.Tom

Just have to get a set of the front steering knuckles and 13" calipers for 13" wheels.

No, but I think I've got that Soft Hit clutch linkage LOL

A diaphragm PP and a rag disc is adjustable, isn't it? ;-) ;-)

Here we go.

I gotta be nuts..A working A/C car with power steering ,that passes smog..Ripping all that out and throwing it in the dumpster. Don't ask where the Freon went to ;-)
I warmed this thing up first and drove it around the block a few times.I was able to power shift 2nd gear without destroying what's left of the clutch. I convinced myself that it won't take much to run under the index with this car.. But then , a friend reminded me that at the 4600 ' where my shop is, I'm giving up 9 tenths of ET.
...Okay ,so it will run close to the factored ET index.
Stay tuned for more parts in the dumpster. 55 pounds out, so far.

Who said anything about 9 tenths?

Closest track to this elevation corrects to 9 tenths slower index.
Probably about there with this bottom feeder ;-)

Nothing exciting here, but I thought I'd do an update for the three or four people that follow stuff like this.

Kinda jumping around right now while waiting on machine work.

Engine out .Head to Kadar Performance for a dime rocket treatment.
https://i.postimg.cc/13VpMys3/20210122-123258.jpg
Too cold right now to open the door and clean the engine compartment, so I did some body work to keep busy.

It doesn't look like it but I got a total of 230 pounds out of it, including airbags , heater, A/C, p/s ,wipers...the usual junk.
https://i.postimg.cc/26WWFGD9/20210207-171951-1.jpg
Cleaned some under the hood but need to get rid of a bunch of wiring no longer needed.
https://i.postimg.cc/tJ5HK0b1/20210207-171422.jpg
I managed to get all the rubber out of the mounts today.. Not easy, but I think I won that round. In my opinion, you can't mount an engine in a FWD car too solid, especially one with a clutch. I may still do more in this area later.

https://i.postimg.cc/tTkSy91H/20210214-173603.jpg
The shifter bushings were plastic and completely gone, as in not there.Replaced with bronze sleeves. Should make a huge difference.
https://i.postimg.cc/MHjQ5DJr/20210214-173653.jpg
Next up are some header pieces from a fellow racer up on the farm in Pa..
Soon as I get the head back we'll set the engine back in start on the header.
Also thanks to Phil at PMR for the front (rear) runner tires.

All that happened with it is I hauled it up to Prescott for inspection.
Inspection, VIN, tax, title , permanent plate, and oh yeah, road use fee. (CA. trick they picked up over here) total $191.00 Probably cheap, compared to some states.
Leave the paint like that? I guess you don't know me very well..LOL

Not a lot of bubblepak- ing going on yet..
Little bit..

New countenance here:
I decided I didn't want to spend 25 bucks and four hours, polishing headlights..Not when I could get a new pair for 48 bucks, free shipping.

https://i.postimg.cc/3JGhVWqD/20210311-161036.jpg

Solid mounts all welded up and fitting to the transaxle and block. I gave the t/a a bath and a spray can rebuild. Hoping for the best ;-)
https://i.postimg.cc/L6k9hnVF/20210311-105950-2.jpg
I remembered that the crossmember that two of the mounts sit on, was rubber mounted too, so I did a quickie solution on that.

This doesn't look much like a header yet, but I promise it will, when I get the head back and put this thing together.

Re: It's About Time (Not MPH)

I had a couple more pics that I neglected to include in the last update, so here ya go}

The bracket that holds the alternator, also held the p/s pump and A/C compressor.
I attacked it with a Sawzall and left just enough I think. It also bolts to the head. I had to rotate the tensioner to the left and then find the exact right belt. (3 tries) but it oughta work okay.
https://i.postimg.cc/pr5vJGgC/20210317-163840.jpg
I had to heat the front hubs with an acetylene torch to get the axle out of them, which , in turn , ruined the wheel bearings..The axle splines were choked with rust but I managed to save them by using small cut off wheel on a Dremel tool to clean them up. It all pressed back together fairly easy . ..A few more parts not covered with grease and rust anymore..

Nice progress, Mark. Header looks great. I`m guessing the water pump needs to driven off the timing belt, so no way to run it electrically?

Um, no not really .The former water pump is now an idler pulley.
The Motorcraft PW 611 electric pump is going into the lower hose.If it's good enough for the 2016 302 Cobra Jet, then it's good enough for me. Going to match up a bottom hose tomorrow and then build a bracket to hold it. No, you can't buy one at Jegs or Summit.. ;-)
Pics to follow.

It's been a while since I looked at rule book. Has the rule changed on this?

It used to read "Electrically driven fans and water pumps permitted. Water pump must bolt on, with no modifications to block."

This particular water pump is an OEM water pump and does not require any modifications to the engine block.
