Decal adhesive remover

Not a real tech-y question but here it is.

Removed a bunch of decals and now have to deal with the old, nasty adhesive residue left behind. Goo Gone worked ok on the softer residue..not so good on the harder residue. Same with WD40.

Any experience with what works well appreciated.

Thanks! -Al

I have not tried or know anyone that has used it. The rubber disc on a drill that is sold at Harbor Frieght may work. They claim it's a decal remover and does not hurt the paint. IDK

It does work, but you have to be VERY careful when using it. By that, I mean go slowly, and don't push too hard. You will ultimately "get a feel" for where you need to be with pressure and speed, but at first, you most definitely can burn the surface. I found it to be very helpful in speeding-up the job, but was nervous the entire time. :(

You may want to try a heat gun or hair drier, warm the panel up a bit and use a plastic razor blade
, or a plastic squeegee. I would follow it up with some rubbing alcohol.

Turtle Wax make an aerosol spray that I just used. Spray it on, let it set a few seconds, soft cloth will remove it all. Works much better than Goo Gone IMO.

Heat gun and keep it at the right distance and rubber scraper like as it was suggested.

3M works great, let the product do its thing and wipe off with a soft cloth.

may take 2 applications on the real tough ones.

Take your time , not much force required.

I 110% agree with Dano. I just removed 15 year old stickers from the cabinets in my Gold Rush with this and some blue paper towels.

H-F heat gun, blue shop towel, 87 octane...$2.50 a gallon ;-)

Ended up using a product called Goof Off Pro Strength. It softened the adhesive and then a scraper rolled the adhesive off. These little scrapers are pretty slick...different shaped corners helped conform to the curves the body has.

Thanks for the suggestions. -Al

Race gas works very well as does WD-40. After either just use a window cleaner to get rid of any residue.

Never had any issues with them damaging paint.

Re: Decal adhesive remover

You guys should know that most racing gas contains lead and that it is easily absorbed through pores in your skin. Lead is one of those heavy metals that the human body can not get rid of. Try unleaded fuel or stick to the WD-40.

Brake Kleens works great with out harming the paint.

Re: Decal adhesive remover

Try using a Spray Lubricant ( Wal-Mart ) $1.99 & soft towel and rub lightly !!!
It will be gone in a few mins. and the paint will have nice protective shine ..
It also removes rubber & dirt / grease .. Good luck

Bob, Ace Hardware had the Goof Off Pro Strength. It's a xylene and acetone mix. It evaps fast so you have be quick-like-a-bunny with the scraper. It took all of a 1 pt. can to get all those years of decals off the 'Black B - - - h' (Ron's favorite name for it ;)).

Don't let John stick you with the lunch check this week as some sort of 'handling fee'. :)

Thanks! -Al

hi, I use a hair dryer, heat decal, peel it off, then i use turpentine to remove and glue left on, it removes it easily. afterwards, I'll rub some polish on spot to bring back the shine. just food for thought.

If your paint is acetone safe that works pretty good.

Yes i would have to agree on using a hair dryer, plastic razor blade & some WD 40.
Just take your time and don’t overdue the hair dryer if it’s on high n hot.

They are used for smoothing out the caulking on counter tops and bath tubs, etc.

Really? How much did that deal cost you? I'll bet my method is cheaper.

BTW, only 3 pages? I'm sure we can drag it out to 6. ;-)

The best thing I ever used - takes the decal glue and any rubber off the quarters.... C-11 and clean rags.

Sometimes decals are so embedded that they have to be striped down to the glue before solvents that won't hurt the paint can be effective.

Heat can soften the paint, make a mess then you have a problem. That wheel works wonders.

This is not a way to remove. But has anybody tried putting the sticker on your shirt then put it on the car. It takes away some of the sticky. They seem to always peel off then.
