2008-9 Impala 5.3

Does anybody know enough about these cars to tell me if the trans axle in these is different from the V-6 models and what would be involved in converting a V-6 car to V-8 LS?

The trans was a 4L65-e , with the small bell . The engine block was special , with the matching small bell . I think it was the same bell as the v-6 . This combo was also used in the last years of the Monte Carlo .

I thought the 2008-2009 Impala SS 5.3 was a FWD and had a 4T65E-HD transmission?

Interestingly, during my travels to Dubai, there were Australian built Chevy Luminas, Impalas and Caprice cars, with 5.3 and 5.7 LS engines, RWD and not FWD.

trusty Commodores :) though we never used 5.3L .
Funny , if the US market had of got more onboard with the G8/GTO platform they might still be being built

GM built specific cars for use in the middle east. Those cars happened to be built in Australia and driver location same as the USA.Saw them powered by the 3.6 DOHC, 5.3 and 5.7 platforms.

I picked up the car tonIght , it's a 3900 V-6. Honestly don't remember that engine in an Impala. Will drive it this week and see what I think before I do anything to it.

I remember seeing a Holden at a school district police parking lot in San Antonio. Couldn't figure out what it was so I asked. They said it was made maybe in Australia and when it had body damage it took months to get parts. Was left driver position. I forgot about that car , I wonder if it will go to auction soon.

I just finished up a transmission from a Monte Carlo with a 5.3, had a 4T65 in it. I've heard rumors they were beefed up for the V8 but didn't see any obvious changes.

They are supposed to have a 4T65E-HD.
There are lots of racing components for those transmissions and there is even a racing guidebook that was published by GM Racing.

You can download the manual from the link shown below.

There used to be some HiPo parts available when GM was supporting the Sports Compact program . That was a long time ago , and there are none of Engineers that used to work in that group left working at GM .

A lot of the components were also made by Coan for John Lingenfelter (RIP). Intense Racing, which does a lot of 3.8 SC stuff, has a lot of parts for the transaxle for high HP applications.

Re: 2008-9 Impala 5.3

A special version of the 4L65 was built for Volvo , before Ford bought them . It had the highest sprocket ratio and Final Drive ratio . Also had the heat treated 4th clutch shaft . Those parts would be a good upgrade for drag racing , although you probably won't ever get into 4th gear . One thing for sure is to get some high torque half shafts . There may be aftermarket help for that .

Re: 2008-9 Impala 5.3

Yes, 5.3 SS in 2008-2009 that I remember. Used to rent one from El Paso airport and bracket race it, 15.1 - .20 at 3800+ altitude and hot weather. Always wanted to race one at lower altitudes. You could cut great lights and it was consistent. Plus ABS, which I needed.
